Tour and Activity Plans

As a Scout Executive I occasionally receive calls from unit leaders.  Recently I received a call from a unit leader on a Saturday afternoon -  those usually are not good calls. This particular call involved a young Scout that had been critically injured on a Scouting Adventure. As we went through the steps to ensure the proper care was given to the Scout and ensure that the insurance certificate was provided for his care, I was reminded why Tour and Activity plans are so important.

The online Tour and Activity Plan (fillable PDF) in my.scouting.org ensures proper planning has been done for any adventure your unit is preparing to undertake. We are here to support your adventures!

Kudos to the unit leader who called me recently concerning his well-planned adventure.  He stayed cool under pressure and got immediate medical help for the Scout. Because of his tour plan, I knew exactly where his unit was, who was on the trip and what kind of support he had for the situation.

Make sure to take a few moments to review the FAQ's about Tour and Activity Plans before your next adventure, no matter the size.

Tour & Activity Plan Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

Leaders,we appreciate all that you do to keep Scouting activities safe for youth.

Chris Mehaffey, Scout Executive

Attention Unit Leaders:

Youth Protection is of the upmost importance to all of us as we serve the youth in our Packs, Troops, Crews and Explorer Posts.  For a while now, Youth Protection training has been mandatory for all who have volunteered to be Adult leaders.  We are aware that for some, completing the Youth Protection Training in a timely manner has become a challenge.

To help you and your fellow unit leaders, Sagamore Council has created a Youth Protection Champion committee.  The committee is charged with helping you and your unit leaders complete Youth Protection Training in a timely manner so your application will not be held up, and your unit's charter will not expire when it comes to recharter time.  As a committee, they will monitor Adult leader Youth Protection status, and as you and your leaders' training nears expiration, they will contact you and provide the means to get your Youth Protection Training current.

The Youth Protection Champion for our Council is Mike Richardson from Logansport, Indiana. Mike brings more than 20 years of Scouting experience and leadership to this position.  The District Representatives are:

North Star District - Cheryl Heuer
Peshewa District - Diane Carman
Wabash Valley District - Raf Tordil

Your District Youth Protection Champion will be contacting your unit in the next few months weeks to introduce himself or herself and to offer any assistance you may need to ensure your unit is 100% Youth Protection Trained.

Thank you for your attention to this, and we look forward to serving you and your youth in making sure everyone involved in Scouting has a safe, enjoyable experience.

Leave No Trace Trainer Training
March 13-15 at Cary Camp

This Trainer course is designed for outdoor professionals and enthusiasts alike. Successful graduates of the Leave No Trace Trainer Course will gain skills to teach LNT techniques and ethics to their Scouts, friends and family.

Each participant should have some general knowledge of the seven LNT principles. This course is considered the "second" level of training and is suitable for adult leaders or advanced Scouts.

This is not a "camping" class - it does not teach specific outdoor skills such as mountain climbing, river crossings, camping, etc.  This is a hands-on, instructional workshop where participants will learn the concept of Leave No Trace and be prepared to teach Leave No Trace curriculum in a variety of settings - whether that's in a school, camp, park, wilderness or front country area.

Cost is $50 with meals provided.  Register through CampMaster. Only 12 slots available.  Contact Angie Manuel  by email or phone 765-567-4919.

 Wabash Valley District Announcements

Wabash Valley District Contacts:

District Director - Colin Earl  920-540-8015

District Commissioner - Dirk Hilt  765-418-6278

District Chairman - Mike Boebinger  217-313-7688

Wabash Valley serves Benton, Carroll, Tippecanoe,

Warren & Northern Fountain Counties

New Wabash Valley District Chairman
            Mike Boebinger

Mike Boebinger was born into a Scouting family.  With three older brothers and parents who were active in the program, he was participating long before he could register.  His Dad, Don Boebinger, was an associate pastor of Central Presbyterian Church in Lafayette, Indiana from 1964 - 1968 and at Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis after that, where he was a Webelos leader, Cub Master and Charter Organization Representative. Mike's Mom, Carol, started as a Den Leader and moved on to being a Den Leader Coach and Trainer.  Both were trainers at Philmont Scout Ranch.   Carol was awarded the District Award of Merit.

Mike was a member of Troop 18 in Indianapolis where he followed in all three of his brothers' footsteps and earned his Eagle Scout rank in 1979.  He was awarded the Vigil Honor by Wulakamike Lodge #21 and the rank of Minisino in the Firecrafter program.  Mike was active in his OA lodge as a Ceremonial team member and competed at NOAC.  As he continued in Scouting, Mike attended and later staffed two Junior Leader Training courses (White Stag, Silver Bars) and staffed summer camp at Ransburg Scout Reservation as the Boating Director and Waterfront Director.  Before retiring from his role as a youth Scouter, Mike earned six palms and was the first "Double Eagle" at Troop 18 and was awarded the Walter J. Schuman "Scout Leadership" award by the Indianapolis Veterans Day Council and the Crossroads of America Council.

As an adult, Mike's career causes him to move around frequently, but he has always remained close to Scouting. He was an Assistant Scoutmaster at the troop level in Worthington, OH, and served as the Council Program Committee Chair for the Anthony Wayne Area Council in Fort Wayne, where he completed his Woodbadge training.  Mike was also the District Membership Chair for the Narragansett Council in Rhode Island.  Mike and his wife Kelly moved to the Lafayette area in 2013, where he is the General Manager for Frontier Communications.  They like to camp, tinker around the house/yard and support their girls' activities.  Mike was active as a national level USA swimming official and now works as an IHSAA swim and dive official.  Mike and Kelly have two children in college, Megan and Sara.

New Wabash Valley District Commissioner
                   Dirk Hilt

Dirk Hilt began his Scouting adventure at an early age and reached the rank of Bear in Cub Scouts before the den leader quit.  There wasn't an opportunity close by so he wasn't able to continue.  Dirk became active again when his son John Hilt (Eagle Scout 2008) joined Scouting as a Tiger with Pack 3333 chartered at St. James with Faith Christian.  Dirk was a Den Leader and Assistant Pack Leader.  Dirk continued to be involved in Scouting as an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 307 chartered by Greater Lafayette Home School Educators Association (GLHEA) and later served as Troop Committee Chairman.  Dirk was awarded Brotherhood by Takachsin Lodge #173, Firecrafter, completed Woodbadge training and received a Bachelor of Commissioner Science.  Dirk has been active in Scouting for 14 years.

To celebrate this achievement and the 100th anniversary of the OA, we are celebrating with this special membership patch. This is available to the first 250 members that pay their 2015 dues. Members must go to an event in 2015 to pick up their membership card and patch. The patches will not be mailed out. Members do not have to attend the event but will need to stop by the trading post and ask for your membership card and patch. However, we would encourage you to stay for the fellowship that OA offers.

The meaning behind the membership patch: The Tortoise: At the first OA ceremony on July 16, 1915 on Treasure Island both E. Urner Goodman and Carroll Edson wore tortoise shaped totems on their ceremonial robes. Colors: The gold border on this patch is to celebrate our Lodge achieving Gold JTE. Logo: The Centennial logo for the OA is in the upper right corner to represent the 100 years of service.
