Dean's Letter | |
Greetings to the members of our AGO Detroit Chapter, I hope we have all had a restful summer and are ready to start off another season of fine music in our church or synagog programs. MARK YOUR CALENDAR: OUR GALA OPENER will be a HYMN FESTIVAL at CHRIST CHURCH CRANBROOK On Sunday, September 23 at 4:00 PM. Cranbrook Director of Music and Organist, John Repulski will lead the Hymn Sing. Invite your Choir members to come and join in the singing under a fine director in the beautiful Cranbrook Sanctuary. The church address is 470 Church Road, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304. I am pleased to introduce our new Bombarde Editor, Dr. Christopher Reynolds. Christopher holds a DMA from University of Michigan and is the Associate Director of Music and Organist at Christ Church Cranbrook. In addition to his musical duties, Christopher also works as the Communications Assistant at CCC. Christopher has set The Bombarde deadlines as follows: Last day for submission will be the 15th of each month. Publication will be the 25th of each month. All submissions should be sent to detroitago@gmail.com. For the people who receive U.S. Mail, Registrar, Dennis Souter has volunteered to continue doing the mailing. Most of us will be receiving The Bombarde by Email. Thank you to Dr. Glenn Burdette who has so faithfully and skillfully done The Bombarde for the past two years. Glenn is now chairing a committee to study and update our bylaws as needed. If you wish to participate in this task, please contact Glenn. We request that all of our members to renew your AGO membership now if you have not already done so. Dalos Grobe is again preparing the Roster for publication and we want to have all of our members listed. If you have not yet renewed, please contact our Registrar, Dennis Souter at dnnssout@aol.com. If you would like to advertise in our Roster, you can purchase as much as a full page ad, or as little as a Business card at very reasonable rates. Contact Dalos Grobe at dalgrabe@aol.com. Our excellent officers, executive board and committee chairs work hard to do the work of the membership. Ideas and suggestions from the membership are always welcome. I will be attending a Michigan State AGO Deans' meeting on September 29 to communicate and share ideas with other Michigan AGO Chapter Deans. Sub Dean and Program Chair, Ronald Kressman has been working to put together another outstanding Season of programs. The events will be published as soon as some of the artists return from vacation and the details can be finalized. Ron has some wonderful programs being planned, so watch for the list and save all of the dates. These are always way too good to miss out on. I wish all of our members a great start to the church year and a fine season of making music. - Carolyn

University of Michigan Organ Music Conference
| |
The 52nd Annual Conference on Organ Music at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance is coming up very soon! As always, everyone is invited to register and enjoy the various lectures. This year, for the first time ever, U-M and the Ann Arbor AGO are co-sponsoring an Organ Improvisation Competition similar to the national AGO and using the same guidelines. As a result of a preliminary recorded round in July, five finalists were chosen: Steven Hoffman, Balint Karosi, Naki Sung Kripfganz, Matthew Samelak, and Timothy Tikker. The final round will be held on Tuesday, October 2, at 1:30 PM at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Ann Arbor. Judges will be Karel Paukert, William Jean Randall, and Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra. The improv competition is a public event as are all the evening recitals and student recitals. For a complete listing, please view the entire program on the U-M Organ Department website. An Excursion to Philadelphia | | The executive board has been discussing a very exciting idea for a major event next spring. It is something that can happen only if there is sufficient interest. What we are talking about is an excursion to Philadelphia, with visits to the Wanamaker organ and Longwood Gardens; we'd also like to include some of the other major instruments in the area, such as the Kimmel Center, Girard College, and the University of Pennsylvania. Some other "non-organ" activities would be possible as well, such as tours of historical sites, such as the
Brandywine Museum. The dates we're looking at are June 17 to 21, 2013, with three nights in a hotel. Transportation to and from Philadelphia, and between locations visited, would be by bus. We would attempt to keep the cost as reasonable as possible. If you would, or might be, interested, please send an email to our chapter sub-dean, Ron Kressman (ronekressman@aol.com).

Organist Carlo Curley dies aged 59 | |
Curley was a regular contributor to the BBCInternational concert organist Carlo Curley, known as "the Pavarotti of the organ", has died aged 59.
A message on his website called his death "a huge loss for us all, and for the organ community".
Curley was well known for appearances on BBC TV and radio, including organ spectaculars from Cathedrals in Guildford, Gloucester and Norwich.
He was the first classical organist to give a solo recital at the White House, invited by US President Jimmy Carter.
In an interview with Radio 2 last year, he talked about his mission to popularize the classics and relived a concert in London's Alexandra Palace that saw him drive down the center of the hall in a Cadillac.
Curley was born into a musical family in 1952 and attended the North Carolina School of the Arts, later studying with two of the world's greatest organists, America's legendary Virgil Fox and British player Sir George Thalben-Ball.
His charismatic personality and imagination meant he was one of the few organists to be known by name and reputation outside of the classical music world and played regularly across the globe on sell out tours, to a large and loyal following.
Curley's autobiography In The Pipeline was published by HarperCollins in 1998.
He also played before several members of European royalty, including the Princess Royal, the late Princess Grace of Monaco and the Danish Royal Family.
