Third Annual SPRYE Cocktail Party Fundraiser

Thursday, September 18 from 6-8 pm

Wainwright House

Honoring Jane & Bob Mickatavage

From the Director's Desk
After a very long and harsh winter, summer is finally here and I am sure everyone is eager to take advantage of the warm weather and longer days. Sometimes it can seem like everyone has left town, but SPRYE has a full calendar of programs through July and is ready to provide services for its members during the summer months.  It was a hectic spring with various events such as the member barbecue and volunteer reception, not to mention family gatherings for holidays and school and college graduations. Here in the SPRYE office we are busily preparing for our third annual cocktail party benefit on September 18th. We look forward to seeing you there. Invitations will be mailed in early August but make sure to mark it on your calendars now. And if anyone can donate a silent auction item, i.e., restaurant or beauty certificates; other services, or has a suggestion for one, please contact me in the office at 481-5706.  We need everyone's participation to make this a successful event. Thanks and Happy Summer!

SPRYE welcomes
volunteers!
We especially need drivers. What better way to get to know your neighbors than to volunteer. Just two hours of your time each week can make a tremendous difference in the life of a local resident who can no longer drive. As SPRYE membership grows, we need to increase our volunteer corps. It's easy to get involved: call 481-5706 for more information.

SPRYE Programs Attract Members and Volunteers

From a tour of a hat exhibit and a local cemetery to the annual member barbecue and biannual volunteer reception, both SPRYE members and volunteers have a full schedule of programs from which to choose. Members and volunteers get to mingle at many of our events and strengthen relationships that have begun during a ride, a home visit or at one of SPRYE's many programs. It's a great way to stay connected and involved in the community.

Though the weather kept many attendees inside, members enjoyed socializing at the annual Member and Board barbecue at the home of SPRYE President Nancy Haneman.
The hat exhibit at WestchesterArts in White Plains captivated the SPRYE group that took the docent led tour.
SPRYE members tour some of the illustrious grave sites at historic Greenwood Cemetery in Rye.

Volunteers Sigi Brunner, Gene Ceccarelli, Ellen Stern and Dick Lee deep in conversation at the reception.

The Arrival of Hurricane Season Means You Need to be Prepared in Case of an Emergency

June 1 through November 30 is hurricane season.  A good reason to be prepared for any type of emergency. Through its Ready Campaign, the Federal Emergency Management Agency educates and empowers Americans to take some simple steps to prepare for and respond to potential emergencies, including natural disasters and terrorist attacks. Ready asks individuals to do three key things: get an emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan, and be informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses. All Americans should have some basic supplies on hand in order to survive for at least three days if an emergency occurs. Following is a listing of some basic items that every emergency supply kit should include. However, it is important that individuals review this list and consider where they live and the unique needs of their family in order to create an emergency supply kit that will meet these needs. Individuals should also consider having at least two emergency supply kits, one full kit at home and smaller portable kits in their workplace, vehicle or other places they spend time.

Recommended Items to Include in a Basic Emergency Supply Kit:

  • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
  • Local maps

New Member Profile:
Angela Cozzi
Ms. Cozzi gets ready for her ride from a SPRYE volunteer to a doctor appointment.
Being in  a wheelchair has not slowed Angela Cozzi down. She still commutes two days a week to New York City to her a job as a forensic accountant at an insurance coverage law firm.  The rest of the week she works from her home in Rye.  Angela recently joined SPRYE because she needed more of a support system to get her to her doctor appointments and physical therapy sessions. She has multiple sclerosis and had to start using a wheelchair in 2009.  Born in New Rochelle and raised in Harrison, Angela has lived in Rye for the past 18 years.  Widowed in 2001 after a 27 year marriage, she has managed to remain independent despite the progression of her MS.  One of her sisters, who lives in Larchmont, was instrumental in helping the local aging in place organization in Larchmont/Mamaroneck, At Home on the Sound, get started and told Angela about SPRYE when several people who were helping her with rides could no longer pitch in. "So far my experience with SPRYE has been wonderful," Angela said. In her spare time Angela loves to cook for friends or meet them at local restaurants. She is also involved with a non-sectarian organization called Handicapped Encounter Christ (HEC) which holds retreats three times a year in Ossining for people with disabilities.

 What's New at SPRYE

Martin Rogowsky
Joan Feinstein
The SPRYE Board of Directors has grown from 20 to 22 with the addition of new Board members Joan Feinstein of Rye Brook and Martin Rogowsky of Harrison. Joan is an attorney and former Mayor of the Village of Rye Brook.
Marty is the former Westchester County Legislator and serves on boards of various local organizations. Both bring their varied life and work experiences, wisdom and great enthusiasm to their new appointments. SPRYE is proud to have them serve on its Board  and  sincerely welcomes them.

As SPRYE's volunteer corps continues to grow, we want to make sure there are policies and procedures in place to support them.  We are working on a general volunteer manual as well as a volunteer driver manual, both of which will be finalized and distributed in the Fall.
