                                                       February 2013
                  Allendale Bellringer
Issue: 3

Greetings in the saving name of our Savior Jesus!

I truly was excited about the Special Leadership Council meeting of Saturday, (1/26/13). The turnout response was good and I want us to keep that up throughout the coming year as well. We at Allendale UMC are looking forward with great anticipation to Tuesday, February 5 as we host the Gulf Central District Leadership Training session. There will be friends, sisters/brothers-in-Christ who will visit our campus for training and fellowship. We want to display our best behavior and demonstrate some Radical Hospitality.

I wanted to share this article written by Dan Dye. He writes articles submitted to ChurchLeaders.com, which you might want to check out. There is tons of resources available to enhance the church's outreach to our communities. At any rate, this article is entitled, "10 Ways to Make Sure Your Church *Doesn't* Grow." You have to admit that is an intriguing title for a short treatise! He opens with: "Last week I talked to someone who was worried about their church growing. I don't mean they were worried it wouldn't grow; they were worried it would. This person, 'he continues,' was worried for two reasons: The church would grow bigger and they wouldn't know everyone, and people would come in that weren't like them. It really got me thinking, so I've put together a list of 10 ways to make sure your church doesn't grow.

Don't have a clear vision for the future.

Don't have any leadership structure in the church.

Make sure you don't build relationships with anyone outside the church.

Try locking the doors to your church building before worship.

Talk bad about your church with everyone you can.

Discourage new people from getting connected and involved.

Keep from showing any excitement about your church.

Don't help out your community.

Make sure you have a long list of rules posted on the front door.

Be sure to keep all activities inside the church building.

Does this dialogue give you something to consider? Are we doing any of these 10, whether consciously or not? Which of these do YOU think need improvement? Are you doing your part to bring folks to worship? Get them connected to a small group or service group activity here at Allendale?

We all need to listen and be attentive to God's Holy Spirit. I believe people intersect our lives each day that need to hear the Good News (the saving message) of Jesus Christ. And, we are to invite and offer to bring them to our faith community. Then what, Pastor? Do you know our vision? Allendale UMC is a faith community where YOU matter. We must keep this vision before us always. We have to work to improve on how we are doing this-showing that people matter to God and therefore matter to us.

What do you think? Remember, God loves you!!

See you in worship!

Rev. Ronnie

January 2013

Church Council Meeting

Allendale Church pays 100%

of its Apportionments

Well January is over, but Allendale hit the road running. Our first Church Council meeting was held on January 8th at 7:00pm in the Allendale Family Life Center. After an opening prayer Joe Deal asked the Council, "what would you like to happen at Allendale this year"? Here are just a few of the answers:

We would like to see our membership grow

  •  We would like to expand our ministries so as to be more relevant in our neighborhood and community.
  •  Raise the level of spirituality.
  •  We would like to see a better connection between our Sunday morning services.
  •  More intentional about bringing people to Christ

Plus a few more.

I think we can all agree this is a pretty good wish list. Joe then asked " what would you not like to see happen at Allendale this year"? Here

  •  We would not like to see Allendale's membership continue to decline.
  •  We would not like to see repairs around the Church left undone.
  •  We would not like to see a drop in funding.
  •  And Mike Footlick would not like to see a freeze this year.

We all recognize these concerns and share in them. The real question becomes can we all share in the vision to make all these hopes and dreams for Allendale Church a reality?

Joe then read to the council a brief Blog from Jeremie Kubechk

I want to share something I learned after spending time with author and businessman, Jon Gordon.

If you are like me, I am sure that you have set resolutions only to eventually forget about them by the 2nd quarter. It's a common issue that plagues most of us. Our intentions are good but sadly most resolutions aren't kept.

Jon Gordon and his bookOne Word That Will Change Your Life, have altered my thinking for the better and given me a different style of New Year's resolution for this year. Instead of a list of goals, choose one word that will become your theme for the year.

The book walks through the process of choosing your word. On one account, it is a simple concept, yet the process is worth checking out. You can get the book on Amazon and then create your One Word.

I chose mine and it came to me powerfully as I was coasting at 26,000 feet above the earth on a recent Delta flight. My word is simple, but strong. My word for 2013 is LOVE - as in Love the Lord God with all your heart and Love your neighbor as your self. Love is thus the theme of my year. All my plans and goals must filter through this one word.

As my wife and I watched Les Mis at the movies I was overwhelmed by my word - Love was the theme of the movie in the form of grace and mercy. The word showed itself practically to me. That is how practical the one word becomes.

Joe told the group his word for 2013 was" connection" To better connect with family, to better connect with his customers and to connect with new ones. and to better connect with God. His one word for Allendale church is for us all to connect better with one another. To bring people to a connection with God and to connect to our neighbors and community in a way that makes them want to connect to Allendale.

What would your one word be for 2013

Two kinds of mistakes

There is the mistake of overdoing the defense of the status quo, the error of investing too much time and energy in keeping things as they are.

And then there is the mistake made while inventing the future, the error of small experiments gone bad.

We are almost never hurt by the second kind of mistake and yet we persist in making the first kind, again and again.

Bob Grainger asked the council for their permission to empty the Niagara Mission fund of about $147.00 and give that money to Roy Smock who is signed up to go back to Nicaragua this year on his own. This mission team has disbanded. The Council agreed and passed a motion to allow this to be done. We ask God's blessing on Roy and his trip.

Clark Evans gave a brief financial report. He notified the Council that thanks to special Christmas offerings, a check from the United Methodist Men for $500.00 and funds from an undesignated line item the Trustees released, Allendale United Methodist Church paid all of it's apportionment responsibilities to the Florida Conference.

The Council then moved to a discussion of the District Training that will be going on at Allendale on February 5th. Sandy Steer volunteered to recruit a team of folks to help host the event as greeter, guides and servers. Charlie Radigan volunteered to arrange for lite snacks and beverages for the event. We are expecting between 275 to 300 participants for this event.

February 12th Fat Tuesday will be back, hosted by the Cross Training Sunday School Class. Charlie Radigan and Pastor Ronnie will be dishing up pancakes and sausages and Joe Deal will do the dishes. Price for the event is $10.00 per family or $5.00 per adult, children under 12 eat free.

Diane Gibson along with a group of volunteers in conjunction with Allendale Children Center are bringing back the Easter Block Party scheduled for March 23rd. More on this as the event planning is just getting started.

On January 26th there was a special meeting in the Family Life Center at 10:00am. At this meeting we heard from Allendale's leadership as they laid out their goals for 2013 and how they plan to make the goals a reality. What kind of resources will they need and how can the body of the Church assist them? This was a fun meeting of dreaming together of what Allendale could look like and what Allendale could accomplish by the commitment of every member working together, connected to God with a bold and courageous affirmation that God is on our side and he desires us to be successful in his work of loving him, loving each other , making disciples for Jesus and serving our community in relevant ways.

Darwin Reedy led the council in a closing prayer.

Special Leadership Council Workshop

                                                                                 January 26, 2013

I am truly excited about 2013 here at Allendale. That speaks well of the enthusiasm of the leadership. Visioning work is important and essential for the work of ministry and mission outreach to our mission field (our community and where we are). The scripture says from the Proverbs of Solomon: "Where there is no vision, the people perish; but he that keepeth the law, happy is he." (Pr. 29:18, KJV). Where there is no vision or consciousness of responsibility regarding keeping the law, the people perish for its lack of enforcement. Dying churches have lost that consciousness of keeping the law of "love for God and love for neighbor," as we fail to fulfill our promise and commitment to "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations." You will notice Christ's commission to us did not say: "Sit and wait for peoples to come to you."

Since my appointment to Allendale I have had a vision for Wednesday Night that looks something like this:

  1. Plan/serve an easy meal from about 5:00 - 6:00 pm. We ask/invite ACC mothers if they would like an evening they didn't need to rush home from work and/or plan supper. We will offer you a night off from that to come to W. E. S. T. (An acronym for Wednesday Evening Supper Together)
  2. Break into small groups according to age from 6:15 - 7:00 pm. Some activities for small children; elementary or pre-teen youth; youth group(s) and young adult group and/ or older adult interest groups.
  3. Brief worship and singing/praising all together in the chapel.
  4. Dismiss 7:30 - 7:45 pm. (This give parents of young children time for getting ready for bed and calm down time.)

__ Utilize our Family Life Center:

  1. Jazzercise classes
  2. Aerobics classes
  3. Line dance for fun & health
  4. Movie-Nite
  5. After school tutoring programs; teaching English as 2nd language; whatever the need of our community. Financial planning-get out of debt; parenting classes; mother's mornings out;
  6. Big Event planning: Souper Bowl Party (not a misspelling-bring a can of soup or other non-perishable for the hungry and homeless.)
  7. Coffee Clutch-Wi-Fi ready for group hang-outs and fellowship like Starbucks and Barnes & Noble.
  8. Set-up Coffee & goodies for between worship
  9. "Right Now Training" and Video resources

          Young Adult Ministry: (18-34) & (35-49)

  1. Something for Singles
  2. Something for Marrieds with no children
  3. Something for Marrieds with children

Older Adult Activities and trips. We have tried some things, but more and wider support may be more helpful(?)

  1. Usage of the church bus, etc.
  2. Support groups for divorced and recently widowed

I am willing to teach more classes of special interests.

  1. "A Disciple's Path" by J. Harnish for seekers and new members or review
  2. "The Christian Believer" curriculum
  3. "Disciple Bible Study: I, II, III, IV
  4. Short term studies
  5. Outreach training

Advertise, Advertise, Advertise

These are not meant for in-house entertaining, but rather to reach outward and to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual needs of our local community.

I believe we are taking steps in the right direction; let's keep it going!

__ Monthly Prayer Vigils: "If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, PRAY, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14, NRSV).

This is not meant to be an exhaustive list by any means. If we commit to following and obeying God, His Spirit will lead us. And, I believe, that God honors obedience and will provide what we need to be faithful to reaching out to persons for Jesus Christ.

                                              Finance Committee Report

                                                          2/01/2013

                       By Clark Evans

              Chair, Finance Committee

Dear Allendale Family,

Greetings! It's a great day at Allendale! The groundhog did not "see his shadow" which means we will be having an early spring! Wait..where was winter again? Let me start off by saying that Allendale is off to a great start in 2013!  During January, we made two apportionments payments: a final one for 2012 and an initial one for 2013. Allendale satisfied 100% of its 2012 apportionments for the first time in several years, and has also already paid more than a quarter of our 2013 apportionments as a result of your generosity.

Secondly, we have continued to plan for the financing and implementation of needed improvements to our church facilities including (but not limited to) roof and window replacements. Though a foundation loan is still "on the table" as an option, the consensus at the most recent church council was to pursue a capital campaign prior to seeking a loan. At this meeting, which was held the last weekend in January, a joint Finance/Trustees proposal was approved to search for and obtain consulting services for an upcoming Spring 2013 capital campaign. We have already had an enthusiastic discussion with one consulting group. We will be obtaining a quote from at least one additional consulting group before the month is over.

Thanks again for your faithful support,

Clark

-        Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount." Jesus said to him "Today, salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."       -Luke 19: 8-10

CHANCEL CHOIR. We have heavy hearts due to the passing of our dear Nadene Hardt, loyal choir member for many years. The choir will sing at Nadene's Memorial Service on Sat. Feb. 16, 10am. Prayers are requested for choir member Elsie Caldwell, who is in the hospital as of this writing as a result of a fall in the choir room. Ed Hempel is now at Menorah Manor - please continue prayers for his complete recovery.

NEW MEMBERS NEEDED FOR CHOIR: The choir has really been hit hard this year with members unable to participate for health reasons. We are in sore need of additional singers. Ability to read music is not required, you only need to be able to sing a melody part. If you enjoy singing hymns on Sunday, and/or have ever considered joining the choir, now is the time when we really need you!!! Please talk to Sandy after service on Sunday or call or email her anytime - she can answer any questions you may have. I guarantee you will find enjoyment and fellowship singing with the choir. Fear not, and step out in faith to join your voice with others in praising our Lord! You will be welcomed with open arms.

TECH TEAM: Thanks to Ron Vagnier for filling in on projector when Larry Ross was out due to injuries from a fall. Thanks to Kenny Smoak - we are so glad you are back in the tech team rotation. We are really in need of more people to train to run the projector at 9am and 11am services. Please contact Sandy.

REMINDER TO CHOIR AND INSTRUMENTALISTS: The basket in the Sanctuary for "used" music has been removed, so please either leave your "used" music on the stand, or return it to the file basket in the Choir room.

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE: We want to grow our Instrumental Ensemble. If you play an instrument, no matter what level, please consider joining us. Contact Sandy for further information.

SOLOS/SMALL ENSEMBLES:   Soloists, vocal or instrumental, and small musical ensembles are welcome and encouraged to perform - please contact Sandy for further information.

 EARTH DAY

In December our Church Council approved the hosting by our church of an "Earth Day" event on April 20th, Saturday, from 10-2. The purpose of this event is to share information with our community about practical ways to preserve the health and beauty of our natural world right. As a faith community, we call this "caring for creation".

Our Green Team is already recruiting presenters for this event and some of the groups which will be represented on our campus on April 20th include: Florida Native Plant Society, Tampa Bay Watch, PSTA, Pinellas Trail, Pinellas County Community Gardens, City and County Sanitation Departments, Boyd Hill Nature Center, Sunshine State Interfaith Power and Light, Progress Energy, Tampa Bay Estuary Program, Pinellas Extension Service and our Allendale Children's Center. The Coordinator of the "Creation Task Force" with the Florida Conference will also be with us.

We need your help to:

  •  Develop ways to get the word out to the community
  •  Set up tables, tents, room arrangements for the event
  •  Welcome and direct visitors during the event
  •  Provide tech support for speakers and video displays
  •  Help with children's activities

If you would consider volunteering for this event, please join us on Tuesday, February 12th, at 7 pm for a one hour meeting in the Wesley Room.

Come early and enjoy the "Fat Tuesday" pancake supper offered by the church from 5-7.

To Who do we pray?

We pray to God, following Jesus'

example in the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:1-4), with the help of the Holy Spirit. Some Christians speak directly to Jesus in their prayer, and that is OK as well because Jesus said, "The Father and I are one" (John 10:30)

What happens when we pray?

Because prayer is primarily a living relationship with the living God, it is spiritual and mysterious. Through prayer, we experience the presence of God; we are nourished and strengthened in ways we cannot always explain or express. Prayer is oxygen for the soul; we cannot live without it.

What happens when we pray for others?

Praying for other people is an act of love. We pray for others because we care and we know that God cares.   This form of prayer, called intercession, is a healthy, normal part of Christian faith and practice. It is always right to pray; and, God always answers these prayers. Sometime the answer is "yes", and there is immediate change. Sometime the answer is "no," and it may be years before we can understand why. And sometimes, the answer is "wait." No matter what the answer or result, we know that God hears our prayer and that we are not alone in the situation-neither are those we lift to God in prayer. Something real and spiritual happens to us and to those for whom we pray.

People sometimes say their prayer life has become routine without much meaning. They are searching for ways to deepen their relationship with God.

Connecting to your Community (Part 1 of 5)

Posted by Jeff Stiggins on 1/6/12

One of the surest signs of congregational vitality is when a congregation is connecting missionally to their community. That means the members of the congregation are involved in genuine relationships with people out in the community in ways that bless others, extend a merciful helping hand and share the Gospel invitation to explore who Jesus is within the fellowship dedicated to following him. A lot of congregations however

Congregations quickly get consumingly complicated. Within a decade, mostcongregations are so complex organizationally that they swallow up most of the time and energy of their best people just to keep the church wheels rolling. Musicians, singers, ushers, greeters, nursery workers, teachers, small group leaders, committee members, more committee members, youth leaders, people to take care of the facilities, people to work in the kitchen. By the time all these functions get covered, there is hardly anyone left to connect to people in the community -- or so it seems in many congregations. Church work consumes all the available resources for missional involvement beyond the church family.

Communities change and ministry styles & strategies that worked well before just don't work so well any more -- except for those already in the congregation. I know of a couple congregations near where I grew up that were really cooking when I was a youth. They are struggling today, however. Interestingly, both seem so similar to what I remember when visiting them in my teens -- which is quite a while ago, now! It is like they found a way of doing ministry that worked well once upon a time and they just kept on doing it the same way year after year. The world has changed, but the people still there still like it. No longer does it attract persons from the community. It is as if they are selling 8-track players. But no one buys 8-track players any more, no matter how well made they may be.

Leaders choose personal preferences over doing what it takes to be faithful and fruitful in Christ's mission to make disciples who transform the world. It is easy in a consumer society to think that the church is only there to cater to our needs. What we want, what makes us feel comfortable, what we are used to can seem far more important than picking up our crosses to follow Jesus in sacrificial service to others. Who wants to follow Jesus beyond their comfort zone? And yet that is exactly what our Lord calls us to do if we are to follow him. As Henry Blackaby put it, "You can't go with God and stay where you are at the same time."

These are formidable challenges to missional effectiveness. It is easy to underestimate their power to rivet the status quo in place. And yet, in every district in our conference church leaders committed to following Jesus faithfully are discovering the Holy Spirit strength to be his hands and feet and voice in their community.

The UM Women gave Michael Footlick a certificate and pin for "Special Mission" recognition. He has served mission so admirably in many ways & in many positions at this church, including: As Sunday School teacher of the Happy Helpers; as a trustee; as a long-time greeter @ the roadside chapel side on Haines Road; as a member of the United Methodist Men; as a participant in the Wednesday night Bible Study; as a volunteer in the UMW-sponsored Flea Market; as part of the landscape team that beautifies Allendale UMC w/shrubs, plants and flowers.

Sandy Steer recently participated in a nationwide swimming event of 6000 yards. The swim is done in a local pool (North Shore pool) and the results mailed to the host team. Sandy placed first in her age group which also entitled her to an All American listing with United States Masters Swimming. Great job Sandy!!

Caring for God's Earth"

Tuesday, February 5th

When Allendale hosts the District Leadership Training on Tuesday, February 5th, we have a great opportunity to hear Rev. Andy Bell speak about "Caring for God's Earth". Rev. Bell is a leader, teacher and speaker with the Florida Conference and the Director of Sunshine State Interfaith Power and Light. This is a great opportunity for our church family to hear his message about steps we can take toward more sustainable living and honoring the work of creation. Everyone is invited to hear him speak. The program begins at 7 pm right here at Allendale.

Reminder For Events at Allendale

Just a reminder that every person or group planning an event needs to fill out two short forms when planning your event. There was confusion and overbooking in December which makes it difficult for the office staff to fix. When planning your event, please call the office and check to see if the date you want is open on the master calendar. We will pencil you in tentatively and will confirm the date after you fill out the forms for approval.

All church events should be planned at least 90 days in advance and must have Council approval before they are calendared. This gives us time to properly plan and advertise the event within our congregation and out in the community. It also gives us time to invite multiple groups and persons to help with the event.

Forms can be found in the kitchen for your connivance. Or call the church office for the forms and we will mail them to you or you can pick them up. Thank you so much for helping one another out by carefully booking your event (s).
