Squad Spotlight
Laurie Allen has been at the heart of the Hero Project since it was just a kernel of an idea. Her creativity, keen eye for design and superb event coordination skills have been fundamental to the Hero Project's first year success.
Laurie's calm and positive presence in spite of a demanding workload and constant change is inspirational. She volunteers without hesitation, always lends a hand when needed, offers advice freely, and is always ready to get the job done! For these reasons, and many more, she's our Wonder Woman.

It's no surprise that Laurie recently received a promotion and is now the Coordinator of the Lake County Childcare Planning Council.
Congratulations Laurie! The Hero Project will miss you dearly. Thanks for all your hard work, dedication, late hours, and constant support.

Up and Coming
Here's a sneak peek into next year! We've developed improved challenges, created new commitments, and restructured for next year.
Challenges will run for two month periods and will combine two themes. We're breaking these two themes into one commitment and one challenge. In order to win a prize, families must make a commitment and complete a challenge. Here's what it will look like:
Sept. 1 - Oct. 31
Commitment: be your child's advocate and create goals to help them be successful this school year.
Challenge: read together.
Nov. 1 - Dec. 31
Commitment: be resilient. Pledge to making time for yourself each week.
Challenge: eat together.
Jan. 1 - Feb. 29
Commitment: breathe
and create a set of parenting practices so you can prevent challenging behaviors before they happen.
Challenge: play together.
March 1 - April 30
Commitment: protect
your family and give them access to everything they need to be safe and healthy.
Challenge: check-in
together.
May 1 - June 30
Commitment: be social and establish community connections. Create a plan for summer social activities.
Challenge: unplug together.

The Hero Project, The Hubs, and Wellville
The Hero Project, led by director Robyn Bera, is a hugely visible and highly impactful program. It encourages parents of children ages 0-8 to be their kids' heroes through monthly challenges and free, monthly "Hullabaloo" and "Minibaloo" events.
"We are real people making real, positive change in our communities," Bera said during her presentation. Although less than a year old, the Hero Project already has 1,300 registrants - representing the parents of more than 50 percent of children under age 8 in Lake County - an incredible accomplishment in such a short amount of time. The Hero Project shows no signs of slowing down, and Bera and her cohorts are eager to partner with and promote the Wellville challenge.
