I like large parties. They're so intimate....
These days I find myself channeling F. Scott Fitzgerald and all things Great Gatsby in preparation for our 2015 ECE Awards Night. If you see a trail of gold glitter, I have probably passed by! The event plans have all been completed, nominations are in, music is planned, dancing is rehearsed, and the food and decorations have been ordered - we just need everyone to RSVP their attendance!
The Planning Council is truly excited to bring this event to Marymount California University in Lucerne. The building is from the 1920's so it perfectly suits our theme. More exciting is the news that Marymount will be launching its new ECE degree program this fall and you will be among the first to hear about it!
But wait....,that's not the only exciting news on the horizon. First 5 California Commission announced the approval of an additional $190 million to improve early learning systems in California. First 5 IMPACT (Improve and Maximize Programs so All Children Thrive), is a five-year initiative that will promote and support a more comprehensive and coordinated early learning and development system for young children and their families across the state. I will keep you posted with the latest information as news continues to unfold.
I am officially 42 days into my interim position as the Child Care Planning Coordinator and I can honestly say the position is exciting and exhausting! It seems like the more I learn the more I need to learn. I am inspired and delighted by the amazing network of passionate educators that work for the benefit of the children of Lake County. You have done great things here and yet there is much work still ahead. For now, let's celebrate our special educators and then get back to the important work of the Planning Council.
See you at the Awards, Laurie |

Following the film will be a panel discussion of the topic.

HOT TOPICS
in the Local and State Early Childhood Education Community
|
The California Children and Families Commission today approved an unprecedented $190 million investment to improve early learning systems in California.
Called First 5 IMPACT (Improve and Maximize Programs so All Children Thrive), the five-year initiative will promote and support a more comprehensive and coordinated early learning and development system for young children and their families across the state. First 5 IMPACT is intended to promote strong family engagement, develop a strong early learning and care work force, and leverage existing local, state, federal, and First 5 state and county funding.
A key component of First 5 IMPACT is increasing the quality of existing licensed and legally licensed-exempt early learning and care centers and homes. It is designed to support professional learning with a focus on continuous teaching improvement. It also encompasses child health and family support and strengthening components.

Senator Murray's Early Education Amendment from Early Ed Update at Ed Central
Earlier this month, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee began its markup of the Every Child Achieves Act (which is the Senate's rewrite of the No Child Left Behind Act). Senator Patty Murray (D-MA) proposed an early education amendment that was unanimously approved by the committee. Laura Bornfreund and Shayna Cook question how much the amendment will actually move the needle for early education and young children. Read more |
An Unmet Need
from US Department of Ed
All parents hope their child will start school ready for success. Unfortunately, not every parent can find the high-quality early learning opportunity that sets their child up for success.
The U.S. Department of Education released a new report outlining the unmet need for high-quality early learning programs in America. Roughly 6 in 10 four-year-olds are not enrolled in publicly funded preschool programs, and even fewer are enrolled in the highest quality programs.

More Time Spent in High-Quality Early Childhood Programs is Especially Beneficial for DLLs
|
by Amaya Garcia
Let's start with the most obvious: DLLs "particularly benefit" from early and continued attendance in a high-quality early education program. This is supported by a growing number of studies demonstrating the benefits of early education for DLLs and immigrant children. |

Access and Quality: Providing Preschool with Purpose
|
|
The U.S. Department of Education released a report evaluating our nation's ability to provide high-quality pre-K access to all children.
ESEA into law, and after years of regulation revisions, the current Congress has a chance to include an impactful investment in our nation's young children. So far, though, Congress has not delivered. On the same day that the draft bill was made public, the U.S. Department of Education released a report that illustrates a need for action. A Matter of Equity: Preschool in America, evaluates our nation's ability to provide high-quality pre-K access to all children.Access and Quality: Providing Preschool with Purpose

Teachers of Toddlers Should Earn Like They Matter
|
Picture this: A four-year-old is in a sandbox, running sand and pebbles through a sieve. An adult is at his side, asking him to describe the speed of the moving sand, prompting him to compare the sizes of pebbles, and introducing words like "filter," "capture," and "sort." She is closely observing his language development, assessing his abilities, bringing math and science into their conversations -- and doing the same with 12 other children under her watch that day. By every indication, she is a teacher. But in American society, she isn't treated like one. Terms such as "babysitter," "caregiver," or "daycare provider" are too often the words that pop into people's heads when they think of an adult who teaches very young children. And their pay is too often at the bottom of the income ladder, with salaries near $10 per hour.
