CALLING ALL EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATORS
Help us make a difference in our community.
And all the people said..........                 Sock Dollager!

Well, we did it! The 2015 ECE Awards are in the bag. We had an amazing time at Marymount celebrating our 2015 award winners (see them listed below), and enjoying the company of our peers. I cannot offer enough THANKS to everyone on the Planning Council that did the heavy lifting. You did an awesome job!  (For those who could not attend, Sock Dollager was our Speakeasy password).

I know that we all want to sit back, take a breath and bask in the accomplishment but there are still more exciting things ahead for us all. The school year is coming to an end but it is just starting for Migrant Head Start, and Steps to Quality will be wrapping up soon but we are ready for the 2015-16 pre-applications to begin. So there's no time to put your pretty feet up yet!

Our focus for the remainder of this school year and into 2015-2016 is Q.R.I.S..  Our LPC Consortium will be working diligently to seek grant funds and to implement a comprehensive QRIS Plan for Lake County. As new information is available I will forward it to everyone.

I hope you enjoy our newsletter. It's full of great information so take the time to look it over. Make sure to give a special shout-out to your fellow ECE award winners.

Still covered in glitter,
Laurie

Governor's May Budget Revision Recap
money_grass.jpg

This week Governor Brown released the May Revision to his budget proposal, which includes minimal early education and child care increases-despite the strong research base, public support and $6.7 billion in growth revenue that includes $5.5 billion in Prop 98 education funds.

CCCR&R Network reviews Govenor's Budget
Early Childhood and Education Virtually Ignored in Governor's May Budget Revision Despite a $6.7 billion increase in General Fund revenues compared to the January proposed budget, early childhood and education saw only a fraction of increase to its budgets. While the Governor noted that the economy has strengthened and revenues have surged upward, the May Revision reflected spending priorities that failed to make investments in child care. Despite the evidence connecting the significance of early care and education enabling low-income parents to work, the developmental benefits to children that support their success in school, the cost reduction to public safety and remedial support of youth not well prepared, child care remained a mere afterthought in the May Revision.  Read more here

NIEER releases the State of Preschool 2014
State pre-K programs may have turned a corner in 2013-2014, but progress remains slow. If pre-K is to be made available to even all children under 200 percent of the poverty level within the next 20 years, state investments will have to grow at a much faster pace. At the 2013-2014 growth rate it would take about 75 years for states to reach 50 percent enrollment at age 4 and 150 years to reach 70 percent enrollment. Even a return to the average rate of growth since 2001-2002 would leave the nation 25 years away from enrolling 50 percent of 4-year-olds in state funded pre-K.    Read more here
Matching the Changing Demographics of Young Children in the Early Ed Workforce
A recent Migration Policy Institute report notes that children of immigrants make up one-quarter of the children under the age of 6 in the United States. Amaya Garcia and Shayna Cook discuss how this changing population of young children will require the early childhood education and care workforce to develop new linguistic and cultural competencies.

Closing the Word Gap, One Community At a Time
Is Lake County  eager to spread the word in our own communities about the power of talking, reading, and singing with young children to boost early brain development? Too Small to Fail co-hosted a one-day conference on the word gap with the White House last October, where they committed to producing a guide with information, resources, and tools about how community leaders could launch or enhance word gap campaigns that would meet their specific community needs.  Watch the video below and click this link to learn more.
