Operation Recognition
Operation Recognition applications are due by April 1.
Many veterans in our community were unable to earn their high school diploma due to military service in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, or because they were interned in WWII relocation centers for Japanese Americans.
These individuals may now receive their long overdue high school diploma from the Lake County Office of Education Operation Recognition program. Family members may apply for diplomas on behalf of qualifying persons who are deceased. Even if a GED was earned, the qualifying veteran may still apply for a diploma. The diploma recipient or the surviving family member must be current or former residents of Lake County. An awards ceremony will be held in the spring.

Lower Lake High Students Write Stories for Lower Lake Elementary
This winter, freshman students at Lower Lake High School were tasked with writing a children's story. Mrs. Dickson's second period class then took a field trip to Lower Lake Elementary School's kindergarten, first, and second grade classrooms to share their work. Several teachers graciously hosted the high school students on Monday, February 23. Alya Owaidat and Caleb Burrus read to Nancy Currier's transitional kindergarten class. Jamara Richardson and Monica Cordova read to Mrs Peterson's 2nd grade class. Other classrooms that hosted young authors were Mrs. Johns' kindergarten, Mrs. Menzio's 2nd graders, Ms. Ellis' 1st grade classroom, and Ms. Campbell's kindergarten's.
Mrs. Dickson's class would like to thank Lower Lake High School
for the opportunity and Lower Lake Elementary for hosting.

People of the Water
A Lake County Historical Novella
Teacher Kathy Scavone from Coyote Valley Elementary recently wrote a novella entitled, People of the Water - a novella of the events leading to the bloody massacre of 1850. The book tells a fictional account of the events leading to the Bloody Massacre of 1850. Like many Indians in California, the Pomo Indians of Clear Lake Basin were forced off their tribal, ancestral lands and forced to work on ranches and missions. They were beaten and eventually massacred.
The novella is available in local museums, libraries and Twin Pines Casino gift shop. Kathy has also generously donated a copy to each elementary school.
Kathy is also the author of Native Americans of Lake County and Anderson Marsh State Historic Park - a walking history, prehistory, flora, and fauna tour of a California State Park.
