7th Graders Participate in Challenge Day
Mountain Vista Middle School 7th graders participated in Challenge Day on January 7. Challenge Day is an anti-bullying program that goes beyond anti-bullying to try and create empathy and understanding for fellow peers. The Challenge Day mission is to provide youth and their communities with experiential programs that demonstrate the possibility of love and connection through the celebration of diversity, truth, and full expression.
The program encourages students to Be The Change. They help students recognize how they can Be The Change with their call to action phrase: Notice, Choose, Act. The idea is for students to notice the change that needs to be made in their school and community, and then choose to change and act on the change they want to see.
The Challenge Day Leaders began with having everyone participate in a few games to boost laughter and fun. Then, all the students were broken into what was called Small Family Groups. Each adult volunteer had 4-5 students. Every student was encouraged to share something personal about themselves with the starter line "if you really knew me...". The program tried to make the students feel as free, safe and open as possible so that they could talk freely about whatever was on their mind. Many students opened up about being self-conscious, being bullied, not fitting in, and even shared some personal family issues.

Hero Project's Popularity Continues

The Hero Project continues to build excitement and energy as it brings the message of hope and possibility to Lake County families, reminding every parent that they are their child's first and most important teacher. Through monthly themes and incentives, the Hero Project challenges families to do specific tasks each week. Past challenges include: reading together three times a week, eating together three times a week and unplugging from technology each night.
"We want to help parents keep their children as their central focus. Each month we offer a different theme, challenge, tips and ideas and a prize to keep parents motivated. There is always something we can improve on as parents, and that's where the Hero Project can help," said Hero Project Creator and Director Shelly Mascari. Upcoming themes include: Advocate, Breathe, Protect and Be Resilient.
The Hero Project launched in August 2014 and nearly 1100 parents, grandparents and guardians have already registered for a free account. This month's theme is ADVOCATE and families are challenged to set goals together. All Challenge Champions will receive a free goal setting journal. One grand prize winner will receive a FREE Kindle reading device!

The PEACE (Police Engaged in Afterschool Children's Education) Program launched early December.
Last month the students of Burns Valley were visited by members of the Clearlake Police Department and treated to a pizza party, where they not only got to sit down and share a meal with the men and women in blue, but were also introduced to some of the more "furrier" members of the force, police K-9 units, Dex and Harley. Visiting Officers included Travis Lenz, Tim Celli, Rod Joseph, Joseph Myers, Thomas Riley, Michael Ray, and Bobbi Thompson.
