NIEER

Is early education and care a profession or not? The debate has dogged the field for decades. Positions taken by the workforce and organizations representing their interests seldom come to full agreement in scenarios reminiscent of the "tastes great; less filling" debates. This in-fighting, often played out between public pre-K, Head Start, and child care, does not center around the acknowledged value of the workforce's intentions, efforts or contributions; rather, it stems from the field's failure to consider what actually qualifies as a profession and its willingness to take it to the next level. Too often, terms such as "job," "occupation," and "career" are used interchangeably with "profession," only clouding the issue. Read more

Pre-K Act to expand access to early childhood education

U.S. Senator Tim Kaine introduced the Providing Resources Early for Kids (PRE-K) Act, legislation to expand access to high-quality early learning programs for children from birth to age five. The PRE-K Act will help more kids enter kindergarten ready to succeed by establishing federal-state partnerships that incentivize states to both improve the quality of state preschool programs and expand those programs to serve more children in need.

"Expanding access to early childhood education helps close the achievement gap and prepare students for a lifetime of learning," said Senator Kaine, who expanded the Virginia Preschool Initiative as Governor. "To keep our economy strong, we need a long-term plan that produces the best workforce in the world.  Read more

Teacher Tips From Teachstone
 Balancing Regard and Organization

It's such a delicate balance: you want to support children's independence and show genuine Regard for Children's Perspectives, but you're afraid that if you do, your class will get out of control. It's happened to me-I'm following one child's lead and suddenly the rest of the group is completely off track, or a child is leading a lesson and the rest of the class ignores him! So how do teachers give children genuine leadership opportunities, and still complete activities and lessons and maintain an organized classroom?

The 2014-15 Lake County  FAMILY RESOURCE GUIDE
 is now available.

Spanish translation version will be  available online in March..

The new year started off with a January challenge to PLAY two times per week with your children. What could be more fun?

Currently, we are launching our February ADVOCATE month with the POP  (Parent on Purpose) challenge. We are challenging all parents to commit to making small changes in your life that will benefit you and your family.

Our Lake County Early Childhood Education sites are our primary targets for connecting with families and we depend on our educators to partner with us to get this information to Lake County families. Go to www.lakecountyheroproject.com to get all the latest information and encourage your families to take the challenge. Our "Play" and "Advocate" literature is available in the LCOE office. Please check with Robyn Bera ([email protected]) if you would like postcards to distribute at your program.
