Yuba College Needs Socks - New Courses Offered!
The Yuba College Early Childhood Education (ECE) program is collecting new and lightly used socks for the homeless. In addition to learning about teaching and child development, Yuba College ECE
students love to give back to the community. A sock drive gives everyone an opportunity to help people and clean out drawers at the same time. If you would like to donate socks, you can bring them to the main Administration Office in building 100. Another piece of exciting ECE news is that Yuba added a new course titled, Worldwide Arts for Children (ECE 7B), which added two new certificates: Diversity Specialization Certificate of Achievement and Art Specialization Certificate of Achievement.
Many schools and agencies are hiring teachers and aides right now, so it is a good time to enroll in courses if you are interested in starting a new teaching career. Sign up today and you could be working with children this spring. Classes start on Monday 1/12/15. For more information call 707-995-7900.

LUSD to Offer Free College ESL Class
Lakeport Unified School District is teaming up with Mendocino College and offering a free class for parents to learn English as a second language. This college class will begin on January 21 and run through April. Free child care will be provided.
The main goal of this class is to help teach English to parents that speak English as a second language. Parents who are not fluent in English expressed an interest in increasing their English language abilities to the district. Director of Student Services for LUSD, Joe Aldridge, and Dean for the Lake Center of Mendocino College, Steve Hixenbaugh, worked together to establish a partnership to respond to this need. "This is an awesome opportunity to support the needs in our community and the exciting start of our partnership," states Aldridge.
LUSD Superintendent Erin Smith-Hagberg adds, "By learning to communicate in English, parents will be better suited to help their children with schoolwork and participate in school activities. It's our hope that English as a second language parents will take advantage of this free college class."
This semester long class will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays, from 6:00 pm to 8:20 pm, in room 16 at Lakeport Alternative Education. Registration is required and seating is limited. Participants are expected to attend regularly. Registration packets are available at Mendocino College and at the Student Services Office at Lakeport Alternative Education.
Lakeport Alternative Education is located at 100 Lange Street in Lakeport. Please call LUSD at 707-262-3017 for more information.

PEACE Program Launches
The Burns Valley Afterschool Program recently launched the PEACE program (police engaged in afterschool children's education). Clearlake Police Chief Craig Clausen fully supported the project and ensured its success. Students and staff worked hard to make it a special evening, complete with pizza, an art contest, and a student-officer question and answer period.

Even though the CLPD is currently short-staffed, Chief Clausen sent 7 officers and two police dogs to the program! They were enthusiastically greeted by high-fives and hugs from students. One young student beamed, "They really came to see us! I love them a lot!"
Thank you Chief Clausen and CLPD for your continued support in helping grow tomorrow's leaders.
