Hey, what ever happened to the Suggestion Box?
Last week, at our monthly "Meet and Confer" meeting, someone asked about what happened to the little black Suggestion Box that was in the mail room next to the copier. It dawned on me that right after I was elected, I saw the box, didn't know what is was for and took it to my office. I am sorry to say it has been sitting there for four years!
I will make sure the Suggestion Box is back up and available for constructive suggestions from LCOE staff. The Suggestion Box will be placed in a spot that insures accessibility and anonymity.
This might be a good opportunity to make use of the Suggestion Box to generate cost and energy savings ideas throughout LCOE.
Suggestions will be reviewed regularly at our "Meet and Confer" meetings.
Thanks and have a good week! Wally

 TAKING THE POLAR PLUNGE LCOE staff brave the cold and plunge for special olympics.
There were several special guests at this year's Plunge, including Clearlake Police Department Officer Michael Carpenter and his K-9 partner, Dex, along with Lake County Sheriff's candidate Brian Martin, and Wally Holbrook, Lake County Superintendent of Schools.
Holbrook was joined in the water by others from the Lake County Office of Education, including Rob Young, Stephanie Wayment, Brock Falkenberg, Della Murphy and John Tomlinson.
"It's great fun for a great cause," said Young, who has participated in four Polar Plunges. "The water is very nice today. Four years ago it was snowing."
His daughter, 8-year-old Maddy Young, dressed for the event as Ariel the Little Mermaid. She said the water was cold but that she would do it again next year.

 Meet Mari Valdez Healthy Start Lower Lake Site Supervisor
Joan Reynolds, Healthy Start Director, knew exactly what she was doing when she recruited Mari Valdez. Following years of serving our community in positions at Behavioral Health, Alcohol and Other Drug Services, and Lake Family Resource Center she has applied her passion and appreciation for working with teens working with LCOE Healthy Start for the last 7 years. Currently at Lower Lake High School, Mari is a women on fire for our youth.
On any given day Mari is darting between dental clinics, home visits, student appointments, going to Social Services, setting up medical services for youth, meetings at Planned Parenthood, medi-cal student sign-ups, vision clinics, case management, foster youth services, probation student services, McKinney-Vento services, and taking students to colleges for visits. In a nutshell, Mari is a full-time advocate for youth, managing resources, referrals and mentoring. When we spoke she was working on selecting "You are a Trojan Hero" appreciation awards for her students. Each week she takes the time to find three deserving students to present with an award certificate. Oh, and in her spare time she teaches Nurturing Parenting to Spanish Language Learners. Why all this attention on the youth and their families? "These teens face challenges and obstacles in their daily life that distract them. If I can help remove those challenges they can focus on school." Mari is never at a loss for words when it comes to sharing why she is passionate about her work:
"Because each one is born with unique potential.
I enjoy speaking with and getting to know each person.
They keep me young and moving...never a dull moment.
I enjoy helping them identify their abilities and interests, and then guide them in developing plans.
They're impulsive...much like myself [laughing out loud].
They keep me real and grounded.
The hugs, smiles and occasional thank you's make it worth it.
I enjoy learning from them.
You never know what they're going to say!"
The day-to-day situations Mari faces can be disheartening and people constantly ask her how she keeps her happy attitude. Her simple answer is that she takes the time to take care of herself. She is spiritual and active in her church, she has a close network of friends and family, and she chooses to do and think positive. "I love to laugh and have fun! If I can't laugh, I might as well dig a hole and jump in!" Originally a Los Angeles native, and a graduate of Cal State Fullerton, Mari and her husband moved to Lake County for a better environment to raise their son -- now a 20-year-old Mechanical Engineering Student at UC Davis graduating in June. Her work-day pace is continued in her off hours as well. Mari defines a perfect day off: first cleaning her house, then working in her yard (weeding, mowing the lawn, trimming trees and bushes), then exercising (hiking, walking, going to the gym, volleyball, dancing) all before planning dinner and perhaps a movie with family. When asked if she ever slowed down she does admit that she is an avid reader. She loves biographies and readily shared her recommendations: I Am Malala, 3 Cups of Tea, and The Shack. She also admitted to doing a puzzle her son sent her, so she does actually relax. She is a self-proclaimed movie fanatic, especially movies based on true stories. Her all-time favorite movies include: Tombstone, Gladiator, Jet Li's Fearless, and Lone Survivor - all action movies, kind of like Mari herself -- advocate on the go. Would it surprise you to know that she is a sports fan? The Denver Broncos and LA Dodgers are her teams. Words of wisdom in Mari's own words:
Be passionate about your life. Be excited to be you just as you are. Go through each moment as though it was your last.
Be grateful. Gratitude is a simple way to make you appreciate your life so much more. Enjoy what you have... even though it may not be much.
Seize every opportunity you get. New experiences are a great way to help you enjoy your life.
Keep your sense of humor. Learn to laugh and people will be grateful. Laughing creates such a positive energy within you and those who can hear you. Don't take your life too seriously.
Believe that you are in charge of your destiny. No one can take your dreams from you as long as you're still breathing. If you have determination and will power, you can do almost anything

LCOE's "Operation Recognition" Program Offers High School Diploma for Qualifying Veterans and Japanese American WWII Internees
A special program offered by the Lake County Office of Education is giving veterans and internees the opportunity to receive long-overdue high school diplomas.
Many people were unable to graduate with their high school class due to military service in World War II (Dec. 7, 1941-Dec. 31, 1946), the Korean War (June 25, 1950-Jan. 31, 1955), or the Vietnam War (Feb. 28, 1961-May 7, 1975), or because they were interned in WWII relocation centers for Japanese Americans, the Lake County Office of Education reported.
These individuals may now receive their high school diplomas from the Lake County Office of Education Operation Recognition program. Read More

LCOE Foster Youth Services
College Visits Inspire our Students!
Before choosing the best college to attend, it is important for students to test the waters. College visits are important. That's why making a college visit and touring the campus is pivotal in a student's decision to apply to school.
Before they commit years of their lives and thousands of dollars to a school, they should be sure they're choosing a place that is a good match for their personality and interests. You can't get the "feel" of a school from any guidebook.
You can look at the virtual tours and watch the marketing videos produced by the candidates. Nothing, though, can match walking down a shady, tree-lined walkway on a fresh, sunny morning on a college campus that can become their temporary home. A college tour is informative, stress relieving, enlightening, convenient, affordable, and a whole lot of fun!
The Lake County Office of Education Foster Youth program strives to address the unique educational needs of foster youth by working collaboratively with youth, caregivers, schools and other service providers. Our program is a resource for collaborative partners to support the academic achievement of foster youth; enhancing their overall success.
This year so far, we've taken students to tour Sacramento State University and Santa Rosa Junior College. We also have an upcoming San Francisco field trip planned for late April. The culture of San Francisco is major and diverse in terms of arts, music, cuisine, museums, and architecture. San Francisco's diversity of cultures along with its eccentricities are so distinct that it offers a great opportunity for our students to explore.
The goal of the FYS Program is to support academic achievement, attendance, and positive school behaviors of foster youth living in Lake County by:
- Providing individualized case management to support academic achievement, attendance and positive school behavior;
- Providing high school to college transitional support services;
- Providing individual school or community-based tutoring services for foster youth students;
- Designating FYS Liaisons to link foster youth to support, resources and a caring adult.
For more information regarding the Foster Youth Program please contact the FYS Program Coordinator Doreen Gilmore at 994-0669.
