Happy Holidays!
I hope you are looking forward to the LCOE Holiday party on the 19th. Click here for a reminder of the details. This is a great opportunity to get together and have a little fun!
Congratulations to the Literacy Task Force and The Taylor Observatory. Both received generous grants from the Wine Alliance. The Literacy Task Force received $1,600 for the Imagination Library and the Observatory received $15,000 for numerous projects and activities (see the article below for photos and more information). We are grateful for the support of the Wine Alliance for these two important programs.
Thanks and have a great week! Wally

Meet Candace Tkachenko LCOE Visiting Educator By Laurie Allen
Candy is one of the newer team members at the Lake County Office of Education. Shortly after having a hip replacement (about 1 week after!), she began her new position. Hobbling on one crutch, she still managed to attend the Common Core workshop at Marymount California University. She has a dual mission at LCOE: 1) to spend 50% of her time at Taylor Observatory developing a science center and the curriculum to support the center; 2) to spend 50% of her time supporting professional development for science educators and creating units for Common Core. Candy has a passion for science. She describes it using words and phrases like, "fun, interesting, stimulating for the mind... providing reasons why the world works... it engages students." After receiving her teaching credential from Fresno State she and her husband moved to Lake County where he worked at PG&E at the Geysers and she began her teaching career. She spent 30 years as a K-12 educator in Science, Math, History and English -- all in the Kelseyville District. Her passion for science is so deep she often plans travel and vacations around science locations. The Smithsonian is a favorite vacation memory, where she spent three days in the aeronautical museum before being dragged out. She claims no credit for it, but all three of her children are pursuing science careers in engineering. Her daughter is an Electrical Engineer at PG&E, her elder son is a Mechanical and Electrical Engineer at PG&E, and her younger son is working on an engineering career. I guess you could say that a love of science is hereditary in the Tkachenko family.
A small town girl at heart, raised in Tracey, she is happy to continue her career here in Lake County. She loves to play the piano (in private only, audiences give her hives) and is an avid reader during the summer break. Since her health no longer allows her to pursue skiing in her leisure time she has taken to painting her house. Apparently, she changes the colors so often that her husband tells her the rooms are getting smaller due to all the layers of paint. Candy has no plans to retire, but when the time comes she plans on taking art (painting, of course, and pottery) and music classes. |

Imagination Library 1st Anniversary
It is the 1st Anniversary of the Imagination Library, a program of the Lake County Literacy Task Force. With the help of our friends and donors, over 1168 books have been put into the homes of 161 of Lake County's youngest residents. That is 18% of Lake County residents, ages 0-4.
It only takes $25 to give a child a book each month for one year! This gift of literacy writes a lasting page in the book of literacy for each recipient. The Imagination Library, coordinated by the Lake County Literacy Task Force, sends a challenge and a request to Lake County to add a page to the book of Literacy for Lake County's youngest residents.
Your donation will provide an annual membership into the Imagination Library Program for a deserving child aged 0-4 who resides in Lake County.
This opportunity comes just in time for gift giving and the spirit of generosity toward others that lasts all year long. Gather up your co-workers and friends and write your page in the book being written to ensure that all children have books in their home and literacy in their lives. Gift cards commemorating your donation 'in honor' of a special person and tax deductible donation receipts will be mailed to all donors.
All questions about and donations for the Imagination Library can be directed to the Lake County Office of Education at 1152 S. Main St., Lakeport CA 95453. You may also email Stephanie Wayment at swayment@lakecoe.org or call 707-262-4128.
