Welcome to the October edition of the Education Briefs.
Fall is in the air! The leaves are turning, the nights are cooler and Fall sports are in full swing. What a great time to be in Lake County.
This is also a great time to be involved in education in Lake County! We are starting to see the results of our new funding formula (LCFF) at most, if not all, schools in Lake County. Schools are busy with initial steps of implementing the Common Core Standards while also ensuring that the new funding formula focuses much needed resources on our students who need it most. While the results of LCFF will not be fully realized for several years, it is a great first step in bringing much needed funding to our schools.
In addition to the LCFF, the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) is in its beginning stages. The LCAP is a required plan to be developed and implemented in each district. The LCAP will help guide schools and districts in aligning resources, services and instructional strategies to the district's budget plan. The LCAP will be a valuable tool to assist in providing quality education to each and every one of our students in Lake County. What an exciting time to be in education!
Don't forget the "Educator of the Year" awards night Saturday, November 2nd at the Soper Reese. Get your tickets in advance! See the article in the right column with the link to RSVP. Each edition of the Briefs will highlight one of our district teachers of the year. Previous editions featured, Erica Boomer from Upper Lake High School, and our Lake County Teacher of the Year; Travis Lyons from Konocti; and this issue features Louise Owens from Middletown.
Thanks and have a great Fall season!

Approximately 1,110 middle and high school students attended the Careers in Construction Expo at the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building on Thursday, getting hands-on exposure to a slew of different trades and career possibilities.
"Now in its 10th year, the Careers in Construction Expo is back after a one-year hiatus spurred by the lagging economy," said Keith Woods, Chief Executive Officer of the North Coast Builders Exchange, which sponsored the event.
Coordinated in conjunction with the Sonoma County Office of Education, the event pulled students from middle and high schools across Sonoma and Lake counties and gave students time to make sheet metal tool boxes, operate platform lifts, take part in mock interviews and even run a jackhammer.

State Superintendent Tom Torlakson visits The Hub
|
 | From left: Wally Holbrook, Lake County Superintendent of Schools; Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Schools; Victoria Schraeder and Camille Schraeder, Redwood Children's Services; and Joan Reynolds, Healthy Start at The Hub. |
On Sunday, Oct. 6, more than 20 representatives from schools, districts, agencies and service providers crowded into the newly renovated building known as "The Hub," adjacent to the Upper Lake High School campus, to welcome State Superintendent of Schools Tom Torlakson and show support for the innovative initiative.
Torlakson praised the collaboration, enthusiasm and determination of the The Hub team.
The Hub - based on the community school model, where services for children and families are located on or near the local school - is common to urban areas, but there are limited examples of rural communities developing such a model.
Torlakson recognized the collaborative spirit, and the hard work of willing partners in developing a dynamic rural community school model.

Preschool and After School Programs Hit by Thefts and Vandals
|
Over the last four months Lake County preschools and after school programs have been hit hard by thefts and vandalism. In May, the after school program at Pomo School lost art supplies, games and outdoor equipment when the supply shed was broken into. The Burns Valley after school program was burglarized in July and lost a computer, other office equipment and food items. Pomo School was hit again in September. Read more

The Big Read Celebrates Mothers and Daughters

 | Robin Shrive and Patti Diener |
Photos depicting generations of Lake County women were on display in the Celebrate Mothers & Daughters Exhibit as part of the Lake County Big Read. The event, inspired by the Big Read selection 'Joy Luck Club' by Amy Tam, kicked off a month long celebration of reading in Lake County. Robin Shrive and Patty Diener, pictured above, organized dozens of photos and portraits of Lake County women dating back to the early 1900's, some including five generations! The Celebrate Mothers & Daughters Exhibit was sponsored by Mendo Lake Credit Union, and is still on display in the Kesey Room at LCOE.

The Lake County Office of Education Healthy Start Program assists students in overcoming health and life barriers, so they are ready to learn. We are located in all 7 local school districts.
Last year Healthy Start provided services to 4,034 lake county students. We also identified 780 homeless and 95 foster your students in Lake County. Healthy Start is here to help these students with a wide variety of services from advocacy to specific case managed services. We also work with Child Welfare Services and California Children Services for better health and life outcomes for our families. Healthy Start takes the lead, working with Public Health, Adventist Health Dental Clinic, Mendocino Community Health Lakeside Dental Clinic, on helping our children access dental care. Our program takes children to the dentist; clinics block out time for us, and we accomplished 1,117 dental treatments for children last year.

Louise Owens
Middletown Unified School District
Teacher of the Year
|
 | Louise Owens, Middletown District Teacher of the Year |
The 2013-14 Middletown Unified School District Teacher of the Year is Louise Owens from Middletown High School.
Louise was chosen by her peers because of her commitment to the students and culture of Middletown High School. Louise cherishes the environment of Middletown High School and is dedicated to giving her best every single day. Prior to teaching at Middletown, Louise lived in a teacher dorm while teaching on a reservation in rural New Mexico -- a unique experience few teachers will have!
Louise is as committed to the students at Middletown High School as any teacher can be. She is there with a shoulder to cry on in the event of sorrow or loss, and just as quickly she will be there with a stern lecture or parental advice that students needs to hear.
Louise believes that relationships are what drive education, and she works hard to build those positive relationships with students. She focuses equally on building the same positive, constructive relationships with fellow staff members as well.
"Louise Owens is one of the finest Physical Education teachers that I have ever worked with in my career," said William Roderick, Principal at MHS. "Louise teaches herself that PE is a gateway to healthy lifestyle. She understands her laws and regulations, and makes sure every day that she is in compliance and pushing every student to achieve their natural potential. She is a model coach that has been recognized by her peers, as well as local publications for exemplary character and dedication to her craft. Louise coaches and teaches with the highest character and expects the same out of her colleagues, as well as her students, every day."
Congratulations, Louise, on this well-deserved recognition.
