FROM OUR CEO
Greetings!

Donna Martin

I hope you will join us in February for our second annual Dessert First event. While the dessert tasting is quite fun and the dinner is delicious, the event is not just about fine dining. It's also about supporting Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri as we continue to develop girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. One way we help our girls is through education opportunities. At Dessert First, we will award two $5,000 college scholarships. We are thrilled to be able to help two of our outstanding Girl Scouts achieve their dreams. If you know high school aged Girl Scouts, encourage them to fill out the application and they could win one of the scholarships. All entries are due by Nov. 30, 2012. Click here for the application form.

Best Wishes,

Donna K. Martin
CEO, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri

Hayrides

If you're planning to include a hayride in your troop activities this fall, the following steps should be followed.

When preparing for any activity with girls, always begin with the Safety Activity Checkpoints, written specifically for the activity.

For example:

- Girls do not ride in the hauling vehicle

- The driver of the hauling vehicle is licensed to drive a vehicle in the jurisdiction and is at least 21 years of age

- The hauled vehicle must meet all state and local safety requirements and displays proper identification showing that these conditions have been met

- The hauled vehicle has protective sides and rear fencing or gates, as well as rear lights in working order

- The hay or straw is properly stacked to prevent slipping

- Sufficient seating space is allowed for each person

- Girls and adults remain seated during the ride

The hayride takes place on private property at maximum speed of 10 miles per hour. Public roads and highways are not used.

In addition, a certificate of insurance (COI) in the amount of $1 million liability naming Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, Inc. as additional insured should be secured from the hayride operator. The COI should be mailed, faxed or emailed to:

Kathy Dabrowski, Director, Girl Development, 2300 Ball Drive, St. Louis, MO 63146, 314.214.3024, kdabrowski@girlscoutsem.org

OR

Jennifer Morgan, Director, Camping Services and Facilities, 2300 Ball Drive, St. Louis, MO 63146,. 314.214.3063, jmorgan@girlscoutsem.org

"What Can a Girl Do?" with the 5 Skills She Learns Selling Girl Scout Cookies?

The theme of this year's iconic Girl Scout Cookie Program is "What Can a Girl Do?" Cookie packages have a fresh new look that helps tell this story, showing the breadth of activities that Girl Scouts do today. The theme has also been incorporated into a variety of new cookie resources, which girls and volunteers can explore at www.girlscoutcookies.org.

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri has developed several new initiatives for the 2013 Cookie Program. We have enhanced the rewards that girls can earn, including items that girls voted as their favorites as well as two GSEM Unique Experiences, a Kindle Fire and an iPad. We are working with a variety of St. Louis businesses to organize Corporate Cookie Booths that will be conducted by older Girl Scouts. In addition, we have expanded our Cookie Share program to offer a Troop to Troop option, where donated Girl Scout Cookies will be delivered to GSEM to the local USO for United States military personnel.

Girl Scout Cookies are a beloved tradition that provide an important source of funds for troops and our Council. These funds are used within our community to provide programs and events for girls, training for adult volunteers who work with girls and maintenance of our local Girl Scout camps.

For more information, please go to www.girlscoutsem.org and click on the Cookie Program banner. In the meantime, mark your calendar for January 12, 2013 (Cookie GO Day), when girls begin taking orders.

Girl Scout Brownie Journey WOW! Wonders of Water

GSUSA has learned that recent reprints of the Girl Scout Brownie Journey WOW! Wonders of Water, Item # 67202, contain an error. The line "to serve God and my country" was omitted from The Promise on the inside front cover of the girls' book. We have checked our records and believe this to be a printer error. We are currently working with the printer to correct it.

In the meantime, we've posted the correct version online. It can be found under the Resources box on the right.

Once Girl Scout Merchandise (GSM) has resolved this matter with the printer, we will send out another statement, advising Councils about replacement of the books.

Adult guide sets are not affected.

When in an official Girl Scout capacity or in any way identifying yourselves as Girl Scouts, your group may not participate (directly or indirectly) in any political campaign or work on behalf of or in opposition to a candidate for public office. Safety Activity Checkpoints

Troops may be planning outdoor activities such as horseback riding or rock climbing. To ensure the safety of the girls, troop/group Leaders are responsible for verifying that all Safety Activity guidelines are met by reviewing the Safety Activity Checkpoints.
These standards include planning and supervision, additional checkpoints, clothing, equipment, site and emergency procedures and First Aid. The horseback riding and rock climbing guidelines and checkpoints of Safety Activity Checkpoints require that stable area and rock climbing sites be inspected and Council approval obtained. See a current list of all Council-approved stable and rock climbing sites.
Troop Money Earning

Troop Money Earning projects must not compete with Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri fundraising efforts (i,.e Cookie and Fall Product Program and the United Way campaign). Troops participating in the Fall Product Program may conduct additional money-earning activities during the time of the Fall Product Program with the approval of the Neighborhood Team Chair. View a calendar showing exact dates troops may or may not conduct money-earning activities. Troops may participate in Family Partnership at any time.
Centennial Patch Program

GSEM invites Girl Scouts of all ages to earn a special centennial patch to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting. This patch will be available to purchase in the GS Shop through March 12, 2013.

Below is an example of one of the Centennial Patch Program activities that girls may choose to do with their friends at a Girl Scout meeting.

Discover: Activity 6: Dig for Your Girl Scout Roots

History is remembering and interpreting past events, either in writing, orally or what is physically preserved. Exploring history connects us to the past and prepares us for the future. It provides us with first hand knowledge of events connected with a particular person or thing. If it were not for accounts of the past, we would not know our Girl Scout heritage. Many Girl Scouts know that Juliette Gordon Low was born in Savannah, Georgia on Oct. 31, 1860. But, did you know that she stood on her head every year on her birthday? To help celebrate the heritage of Girl Scouting, plan a birthday party this month in honor of Juliette's birthday, and as one of the activities, have everyone stand on their head.

Attention All Daisy Troop Leaders

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri (GSEM) is embarking on a long term research project designed to measure the outcomes of Girl Scouting for girls over several years.

We are inviting parents to enroll their Girl Scout Daisies in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You are asked to provide the following information to the parents of girls in your troop. If the Girl Scouts in your troop registered last year, they do not have to re-register for the project.

Dear Parent, Guardian,

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri (GSEM) and Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) invite your daughter to be a Girl Scout Voice and to share her experiences about Girl Scouting through a brand new research project. GSEM is embarking on a long-term study of the benefits of Girl Scouting and we'd like to have your daughter participate.

The purpose of this project is to understand what your daughter is doing and learning through Girl Scouts and to identify how she benefits over the long term. By completing these online surveys, your daughter will help us tell the story of the Girl Scout experience for all girls.

Please register your Girl Scout to have her voice heard at www.girlscoutvoices.org.

- Please note that your daughter's information on these surveys is secure and confidential. Your daughter will not receive any sales or marketing contact as a result of her participation, and Council staff and volunteers will not be able to see her individual responses to questions. We will see the information compiled across all girls who take the surveys. Information on the Girl Scout data policy may be found at www.girlscouts.org/research/data_use_policy.asp.

- There will be incentives for Girl Scouts as they complete the surveys.

Once your daughter is registered, she will receive invitations to participate in online surveys later this winter as well as in future years. She may accept or refuse to participate in these surveys as she wishes.

If you have questions about this project, please contact Kathy White, Director, Research and Evaluation, 314.592.2389, kwhite@girlscoutsem.org.
