FROM OUR CEO
Greetings!

Donna Martin

With our centennial year coming to an end, it is a wonderful time to look back at all the fun we've had this past year and to look forward to a terrific next 100 years.

I hope you were all able to make it to our BIG Day and that you had as much fun as we did! It truly was a great day for all of eastern Missouri, and I'd like to give a special thanks to everyone who made it happen. I saw lots of smiling faces at the parade, FamFest and celebrity concert, and it was fantastic to see everyone having a great time and celebrating 100 years of Girl Scouting.

Although the 100th anniversary is almost over, we still have plenty of exciting things coming up including the Fall Product Program and the Cookie Program! These programs help raise funds for your troop as well as teach girls skills they can use throughout their entire lives.

We also have Leadership FUNdamentals coming up at the beginning of November and our Believe in Girls run/walk at the end of November.

We aren't slowing down anytime soon and we hope you're as excited as we are about things to come!

In an effort to go green and efficiently get information out to all of our members, we will no longer be printing BUZZ Neighborhood Announcements and Council News after the October issue. We have heard from our girls that going green is very important to them, so this will be one part of our green initiative. This e-newsletter will be the best way to get the most current and important information from the Council, so please tell your fellow Leaders and volunteers, parents, family and friends to sign up by visiting our website and clicking E-News Sign Up at the bottom of the page.

Best Wishes,

Donna K. Martin

October is National Bullying Prevention Month

All children will witness bullying at some point. According to The Ophelia Project, almost 30% of youth in the U.S. are estimated to be actively involved in bullying, either as a bully, a target or both. Girl Scout Leadership Journeys are great resources to use with your girls to develop healthy relationship skills, appreciate everyone's abilities and learn to resolve conflicts. Perhaps your girls want to implement a take action project that addresses bullying. We encourage you to check out the activities in the Journeys for your age level, including aMAZE for Cadettes and Your Voice, Your World for Seniors.

If you're interested in using an activity from our Project Anti-Violence (PAVE) curriculum, please contact Michelle Johnson, 314.592.2344, mjohnson@girlscoutsem.org or Peggy Maull, 314.592.2398, pmaull@girlscoutsem.org.

Be sure to look for PAVE spring workshops in the next issue of Lead & Learn.

Fall Product Booths are a Great Way to Reach New Customers

Booths are a great way for girls to use marketing skills, reach new customers and represent Girl Scouts in the community. Troops can hold Fall Product booths from November 28-December 9, 2012. Peanut Pantries will be open during this time to provide additional product.

Ask families in the troop if they have business connections that could provide a booth location or consider sites such as hardware stores, drugstores, gas stations, college campuses or school events. Information about conducting booths is available in the Troop Plan Book and on Trophy Nut Ordering System. Be sure to send the Fall Product Booth Form to the Council office so we can promote your booths with customers.

Safety Activity Checkpoints

Troops may be planning outdoor activities such as horseback riding or rock climbing. To ensure the safety of the girls, troop/group Leaders are responsible for verifying that all Safety Activity guidelines are met by reviewing the Safety Activity Checkpoints.
These standards include planning and supervision, additional checkpoints, clothing, equipment, site and emergency procedures and First Aid. The horseback riding and rock climbing guidelines and checkpoints of Safety Activity Checkpoints require that stable area and rock climbing sites be inspected and Council approval obtained. See a current list of all Council-approved stable and rock climbing sites.
Troop Money Earning

Troop Money Earning projects must not compete with Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri fundraising efforts (i,.e Cookie and Fall Product Program and the United Way campaign). Troops participating in the Fall Product Program may conduct additional money-earning activities during the time of the Fall Product Program with the approval of the Neighborhood Team Chair. View a calendar showing exact dates troops may or may not conduct money-earning activities. Troops may participate in Family Partnership at any time.

GSEM invites Girl Scouts of all ages to earn a special centennial patch to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting. This patch will be available to purchase in the GS Shop through March 12, 2013.

ADULT DEVELOPMENT
Healthy Habits

Throughout the Journeys, girls are encouraged to eat healthy snacks and stay active, which is an important message we want all girls to get. In partnership wtih the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, three "healthy habits" booklets have been developed for volunteers to use in conjunction with their Journey Adult Guides. The booklets are posted on www.girlscouts.org or can be downloaded for free. For hard copies, please visit the Emerson Resource Center.

Through the use of these free resources for Daisies, Brownies and Juniors, Girl Scout volunteers and families can guide girls in fun, easy ways to lead active, healthy lives.
Have You Saved A Life Today?

Each year, the American Red Cross teaches lifesaving skills to over 700 GSEM volunteers. Creating a safe environment for more than 58,000 girls annually is only possible through the help of people like you. Please consider devoting a little bit of your time to help us make the world a safer place.

There is a unique opportunity to take the First Aid Instructors course with the American Red Cross. A class will take place on October 16, 23 and 30 from 6-10 pm at the GSEM Service Center. This class will be available for only $50. In order to participate, you must hold a current CPR and First Aid Certification. This class will be limited to only 8 participants.

This is only available to volunteers interested in training CPR/FA classes for GSEM. To train for GSEM, you are required to schedule two courses per year for two years and have the ability to schedule 9 months in advance to meet print deadlines. If you are interested, please submit a registation form found in Lead & Learn as soon as possible. The course number is CF.600 and registration will be handled on a first come, first served basis.

If you have additional questions, contact Chatnee Patterson, 314.592.2388, cpatterson@girlscoutsem.org.
Attention All Daisy Troop Leaders

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri (GSEM) is embarking on a long term research project designed to measure the outcomes of Girl Scouting for girls over several years.

We are inviting parents to enroll their Girl Scout Daisies in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You are asked to provide the following information to the parents of girls in your troop. If the Girl Scouts in your troop registered last year, they do not have to re-register for the project.

Dear Parent, Guardian,

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri (GSEM) and Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) invite your daughter to be a Girl Scout Voice and to share her experiences about Girl Scouting through a brand new research project. GSEM is embarking on a long-term study of the benefits of Girl Scouting and we'd like to have your daughter participate.

The purpose of this project is to understand what your daughter is doing and learning through Girl Scouts and to identify how she benefits over the long term. By completing these online surveys, your daughter will help us tell the story of the Girl Scout experience for all girls.

Please register your Girl Scout to have her voice heard at www.girlscoutvoices.org.

- Please note that your daughter's information on these surveys is secure and confidential. Your daughter will not receive any sales or marketing contact as a result of her participation, and Council staff and volunteers will not be able to see her individual responses to questions. We will see the information compiled across all girls who take the surveys. Information on the Girl Scout data policy may be found at www.girlscouts.org/research/data_use_policy.asp.

- There will be incentives for Girl Scouts as they complete the surveys.

Once your daughter is registered, she will receive invitations to participate in online surveys later this winter as well as in future years. She may accept or refuse to participate in these surveys as she wishes.

If you have questions about this project, please contact Kathy White, Director, Research and Evaluation, 314.592.2389, kwhite@girlscoutsem.org.
