A message from your president...
Dear Colleagues;
Here's hoping that you ALL have had a wonderful summer that has re-energized your PASSION for our PROFESSION!
WHAT IS A PROFESSIONAL?
*a person whose job requires special education, training, or skill done or given by a person who works in a particular profession
Communicate your passion about the profession AND here is my point delivered FROM A SOAPBOX:
WHY ARE WE ALLOWING OTHERS TO REFER TO US AS "gym teachers?" Does this term make your BLOOD boil?
While fervently watching as many minutes of the broadcasted OLYMPICS as I possibly can...WHY do I consistently hear segments call us "gym teachers?" Even on TWITTER!
Does this make you feel "less than?"
This article was published by NEA in 2014, but is still very relevant and basically lays it all out.
Make yourself KNOWN among your faculty as a LEADER in the areas of PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, HEALTH and WELLNESS. BE the "go-to" person who CAN INTEGRATE cross-curricular subjects. LIVE the fact that YOU ARE IMPORTANT and LOVE what you do!

Rhyme & Reason - Using Implicit Memory to Support Explicit Learning in Physical Education August 24th 8:00 - 9:00pm All teachers, regardless of content area, are in the business of growing dendrites and connecting neurons. That is how memory becomes physically wired into the brain. Brain compatible learning means carefully considering the way the brain and body learn when designing units, lessons and activities. It means thinking about pathways to memory, attention, meaning, how the brain uses time, managing emotional states and a whole lot more. Developing a working knowledge of the science of learning and then applying that understanding to unit and lesson development and daily interactions with students will result in more efficient use of time and increased learning. At the heart of this task lies understanding and using multiple memory pathways to help students gain more from the time they spend in your classes.

Start the year on the right foot
Carrie's Monthly Playlist...Class management is key and it is completely in your hands to set the tone for behavior in your class. No matter how many students or what population I guarantee you will have a well behaved class as long as you remember one thing CONSISTENCY. Be very clear what your class expectations are and stick to them. Once you let something slide you are back to square one. Kids will always test you and see what they can get away with. All it takes is one or two examples of following through with your consequence and the rest of the students will respect your class management expectations.
The foundation of my class management is my "Golden Rule"....when the music is playing the students are to move and when the music stops the students are to freeze. Yes, it is as simple as that and it WORKS. Remember, I have taught classes as large as 180 and I have taught preschool thru 8 th grade general ed as well as special ed. Using music as a signal and management tool works every time. MORE

Model Curriculum...ideas!
Need ideas to jump start your lesson planning? Looking to update your lessons? Check out the NJDOE Model Curriculum for some fresh ideas! The model curriculum is not intended to provide daily learning objectives but rather a sequence of five units of study with corresponding assessments. The Student Learning Objectives (SLO) for each unit should provide clear learning targets for student achievement and mastery. Each unit contains scaffolding to monitor achievement and mastery through each grade level contained in the grade band. The time frame to teach each Health and Physical Education unit may be modified to accommodate each school's program and student needs. At the start of each document, you will find a brief overview of the grade band units which will provide additional context for how the units were organized and sequenced. MORE

A 'Healthy Fundraiser' Keeps Kids Moving Before & After School at Jesse Boyd Elementary
So many students showed up to before- and after-school physical activity programming at Jesse Boyd Elementary (Spartansburg, SC) that the physical education department was in need of a creative way to sustain the growing interest. To ensure adequate funding so all students could participate, the school organized a "healthy fundraiser" -- one that embodied its day-to-day mission of promoting easy, enjoyable ways for students to stay active. The result? A community event that was more exciting and successful than previous fundraisers. MORE

Most of us have heard the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity "MVP" daily, but what does this actually mean?
Many of my patient families know this guideline, but lack the understanding of how to apply it to their everyday lives. It can be confusing! What activities constitute as MVP? How can I get my child to participate in activities that get to this intensity? MORE

According to a study published in 2011 by the American Academy of Pediatrics, parents should take caution when choosing a beverage for their children before, during, or after exercise. In fact, the AAP suggests only small amounts of energy and sports drinks may be appropriate for children who participate in high-intensity physical activity in hot weather for more than one hour. However, for kids who engage in routine or moderate physical activity for less than three hours in normal conditions, these beverages aren't suitable. MORE

Mental illnesses in children are so complex that parents and even healthcare professionals cannot always detect them. But scientists have now discovered that changes in brain networks may help youth adapt to adversity. MORE

Engaging in sports benefits the mind and body. Participating in team sports also fosters camaraderie and helps kids learn accountability. The findings of a new study, published in the journal Pediatrics, show another health benefit of sports and exercise in kids. Philip Veliz, from the University of Michigan, and colleagues have found that teen athletes are less likely to abuse prescription painkillers such as heroin and opioids compared to their non-athlete counterparts. Message from the NJAHPERD Advocacy Chair
Be Informed!
Do you know....
- Physical Education, Health Education and Safety are one of the 18 "well rounded education"subjects in ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act)?
- If your school/district has a Committee formed for ESSA?
- Health Education, Physical Education and Safety are entitled to funding under ESSA (Title I, Title II and Title IV) beginning in the school year of 2017-2018?
- New Jersey has a State Statute/Mandate requiring Health Education, Physical Education and Safety (Statue 18A:35-7&8)?
- There is a Guide to Option Two (Statute N.J.A.C. 6A : 8-5 (a) 2 i) Option Two is NOT an EXEMPTION!
- NJAHPERD supports the re-introduced pending Bills S1144/A2469 which requires a public school district to provide a daily recess period for students in grades K-5 (S1144 has already passed the full Senate) and S2323/A3964 which requires teachers of Health Education and Physical Education in grades Kindergarten through Six in public schools to possess the appropriate endorsement to the instructional certificate, and includes a "grandfather" clause?
Please visit NJAHPERD website and the NJ Department of Education website for the latest updated resources.
NJAHPERD has offered assistance to the NJ Department of Education on the ESSA process. We have created an Action Plan for our members, principals and supervisors and shared it with ESSA staff.
Thank you in advance for getting involved with your school and becoming an ADVOCATE for your profession, your students and community. You can start at the local level by showcasing your programs at a PTA meeting, have a Family Fun Night, attend and present at a Board of Education meeting. Also, please take advantage of our Professional Development opportunities throughout the year so you are well informed about what is going on in New Jersey. Above all be proud for what you do each and everyday to make a difference in the lives of children.
