THINGS TO SHARE WITH PARENTS AND STUDENTS ABOUT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS:
From SHAPE America:
Now, it is time for you to RELAX, REGROUP, and RECHARGE!
It's amazing how much less stressful the school year is when you've done some of the deep thinking and planning over the summer when you're not rushed or distracted.
THINK ABOUT ALL THE WONDERFUL CONNECTIONS YOU MADE WITH STUDENTS THIS YEAR AND HOW YOU MAY HAVE INFLUENCED POSITIVE CHANGES IN THEIR CHARACTER OR SELF-ESTEEM. Remember the quote from the movie THE HELP, "You is kind, you is smart, you is important!"
Enjoy your time with family and friends! Until next time..."THROW KINDNESS AROUND LIKE CONFETTI

RECESS & CERTIFICATION Bill Updates
The Recess Bill (S-1144 A-2469) has been re-introduced and referred to both the Assembly and Senate Education Committees. The bill will be heard on MONDAY in the Senate Education Committee.
The bill "requires a public school district to provide a daily recess period for students in grades kindergarten through 5".
The Certification Bill (A-2764) has been re-introduced to the Assembly Education Committee by former Assemblyman Diegnan. (Assemblyman Diegnan is now Senator Diegnan.)
On May 31st, Senator Turner re-introduced the Certification Bill (S-2323) to the Senate Education Committee.
The bill "requires teachers of health education and physical education in grades kindergarten through six in public schools to possess appropriate endorsement to instructional certification".
NJAHPERD participated in the Advocacy Summit sponsored by the NJPTA and NJ School Boards Association on June 2nd in Trenton. During the open comment forum, JoAnn Doherty, Advocacy Chair, provided information on both bills, as well as the mandated 150 minutes per week of health education, physical education and safety and not counting recess toward those minutes. We came away with a very positive response from Senator Sweeney.
We will continue to work with our partners on these bills because we care about our students and the exemplary programs we provide to our communities. You can help by stopping by your district legislators office this Summer and talk to them about your profession and ask them for support on these bills. They really do listen to their constituents.

Morris Area Elementary School teachers Darcy Winkelman, Lanna Stahman and Andrew Jipson are using what they've learned about how movement impacts learning to expand the Minnesota district's physical education curriculum, offering more activities to more students and shifting the emphasis from competitive sports to personal physical fitness. Through their work and outreach efforts, they hope to spread excitement for physical activity from the classroom into the community. MORE

Students who don't sit still during the school day are actually excelling in the classroom. Really? Yes ,,, and there's evidence to support that claim. Schools in New Jersey and Washington, D.C. are generating great academic results by keeping their students physically active. MORE

"It's hard to find an open seat in Mrs. Vanderbush's Sioux Falls, South Dakota first grade class for a good reason. "I kinda just leave it up to them; where's the spot that's going to work best for you? Where are you going to learn better during math, cause it changes throughout the day," Vanderbush explained why, instead of regular chairs, students find wobble stools to stability balls. READ MORE

Children struggling in physical education class come to dread three stern words from their coach commanding them: take a lap. But that's a phrase they'll never hear from North Carolina PE coach Joelle Newman at Wrightsville Beach School. "I don't want to use exercise as a punishment, I want to make physical activity fun," said Newman, who was recently honored with a statewide teaching award. MORE

Each fifth-grade physical education class at Oregon's Gearhart Elementary School and Seaside Heights Elementary School completed a five-week unit focused on the unicycle this term. PE teacher Brian Sigler, who has been with the school district about 27 years, pitched the idea last summer to Seaside Heights Elementary School Principal Sande Brown, who was supportive. The school got 10 unicycles, and Sigler acquired an additional five. MORE

Movement to music is not only great exercise that keeps you limber, it also allows you to develop a greater connection to the universe and your body. We live in a digital society where we're often caught up in our own heads, so dance is a great way to embody the amazing vessel that runs on its own to keep us alive. Plus dancing reduces stress, increases serotonin levels and, in one study, was the only physical activity to offer protection against dementia. MORE

According to a poll from the National Alliance for Youth Sports, around 70 percent of kids in the United States stop playing organized sports by the age of 13 because "it's just not fun anymore." That isn't the problem; it's a consequence of a number of cultural, economic and systemic issues that result in our kids turning away from organized sports at a time when they could benefit from them the most. Try Baseball this Summer
The longer and warmer days of summer mean sunny days of watching your favorite baseball team bring home a victory. This summer, instead of just watching baseball, try playing it with friends! Baseball and softball can be played on organized teams as part of a league, or as a fun backyard pick-up game using plastic bats and balls. There are also great health benefits to playing baseball and softball. You'll build muscles from throwing the ball and swinging the bat, as well as increase your cardiovascular fitness by running the bases. Since baseball and softball require short bursts of activity surrounded by periods of standing and sitting, it is a great game for both ultra-fit and new-to-fitness individuals. MORE

Is it education or indoctrination? When it comes to Washington state's new standards for Health and Physical Education, it depends on who you ask. With staggering physical inactivity and obesity statistics, robust research around the link between physical activity and academic success, and the release of the May 2010 White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity Report to the President, it was evident that action needed to be taken and a siloed approach would not work. As a result, health, education, government, nonprofit and private sector leaders joined together - combining their expertise, creativity and passion - to come up with a solution. MORE

Message from the NJAHPERD Advocacy Chair
What can YOU do to help?
Be Informed, Get Involved and Take Action!
- Start a dialogue now with your Supervisor and/or Principal. Explain who we are as an Association, and emphasize that Health Education and Physical Education are critical to a "well rounded education" under the new Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
- Contact your Federal Legislators to ensure that funding for ESSA is authorized at the level Congress recommends of $1.65 Billion! Visit the SHAPE America Legislative Action Center and TAKE ACTION NOW - Fund Every Student Succeeds Act Block Grant! Write your legislators-fill out your contact information and send the message. New Jersey needs to overload their email boxes.
- Physical Education, Health Education and safety are required in NJ Law by Statute, in grades 1-12, for a minimum of two and a half hours or 150 minutes per week. If that is not happening in your school talk to your principal. If you have questions, contact Brendan O'Reilly or your County Superintendent. If we do not speak up for our students, who will?
Together we can continue to "Move Advocacy Forward" to promote exemplary Physical Education, Health Education and Physical Activity for the students of New Jersey.
JoAnn Doherty
NJAHPERD Past President /Advocacy Chair
