Project ACES was created by NJ physical education teacher Len Saunders in 1989 as a method of motivating children to exercise. ACES takes place on the first Wednesday in May as part of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month along with National Physical Education Week. It has been labeled as "the world's largest exercise class" by the media. Since 1989, millions of children from all over the world exercise together to promote proper health and fitness habits. Let's Move! Active School Conference - A Success Story!
Thanks to funding provided by the NJ Department of Health through a CDC grant, NJAHPERD was able to provide free professional development training to 48 professionals at the 3rd Annual Let's Move! Active School Conference on April 18th at Long Branch Middle School. Special thanks to Health and Physical Education supervisor, Dr. Laurie Cancalosi for arranging use of the facility, lunch and providing NJAHPERD with technical assistance. Her entire staff, including IT, helped make the conference run smoothly!
Pam Powers, the LMAS SHAPE America manager, presented 3 interactive sessions that helped the participants identify and understand components of a Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program (CSPAP) and how to implement the Let's Move! Active Schools roadmap.
Attendees had the opportunity to review their district wellness policy and compare it to the model Alliance for A Healthier Generation policy recommended by the Center for Supportive Schools. Bike Education, including an interactive bike parts identification activity, was presented by experts Leigh Ann Von Hagen and Sean Meehan from NJ Safe Routes to School. Long Branch teachers, Fred Balina and Michele Abner presented a fun session of instant activities that had everyone moving.
All attendees received a flashdrive loaded with resources as well as a "brain energizer" book to share activities with classroom teachers.
Thanks to all who assisted in contributing to the success of this event! The next LMAS conference will be held this Fall in Wyckoff! Registration is free and we hope to have more administrators in the audience.

Ray and the Sunbeatables™: A Sun Safety Curriculum for Preschoolers
Thursday, May 19th
8:30 am - 12:30 pm
Community YMCA
(201 Broad Street, Matawan NJ 07747 (** Please use the entrance by the playground**) Cost: FREE Training to all Early Childcare Centers
Ray and the Sunbeatables™: A Sun Safety Curriculum for Preschoolers, is an evidence-based program developed by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center to educate children, parents, and teachers about sun protection. The program emphasizes the sun safety behaviors of seeking shade, applying sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and minimizing time outdoors during peak sun hours (10:00 AM-4:00 PM). Sunburn during childhood is a major risk factor for melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, so it is important for children to develop sun protection habits early. It is also important for children's teachers and parents to be protected from the sun, not only to reduce their skin cancer risks, but also to model these behaviors for children.
All childcare centers to sign up and attend the Sunbeatables™curriculum training at the Community YMCA will be offered one free curriculum toolkit per implementing site. MORE

Absence of Recess a Setback for New Jersey Children
The absence of recess in New Jersey public schools is a disfavor to elementary school children and a major setback in promoting a healthy weight among children. Childhood obesity in our country has more than tripled in the past 30 years. Today, nearly one in four children ages 10-17 in New Jersey are overweight or obese which leads to a plethora of health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes and other chronic illnesses that have been generally associated with adults. According to the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research, healthcare costs due to childhood obesity are estimated to cost $14 billion per year.
As a state, we need to encourage active play among children. Recess represents an unparalleled chance to increase physical activity, improve academic performance and foster social interaction among kids. It's also an underutilized opportunity to improve the overall learning environment in our schools. When it comes to recess-some schools have it, and for others it's become an endangered species! As the number of minority students in a school rise; and the lower the income level of their parents, the less time is allotted for recess. In fact, nearly half of low income children go all day without it. MORE

ESSA
In looking ahead to the sunset of the PEP grant program, funding opportunities for health and physical education programs will now be available under the newly passed Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
To ensure full implementation of the legislation, appropriators in Congress have changed the timeline for accessing these funds so states and school districts have ample planning time. The 2016-2017 school year will be a transition year for states and school districts.
In July 2016, federal education funding will be distributed to states using No Child Left Behindformulas, and states will use the 2016-2017 school year to complete ESSA's required plans and needs assessments ahead of the 2017-2018 school year.
In July 2017, funding will be distributed to states using ESSA formulas, which will include the new funding for Title IV, Part A block grants for Student Supports and Academic Enrichment Grants.

VICTORY! Starting May 2017, Americans will know the calories when eating out
We are pleased to announce that implementation of menu labeling is finally going forward nationally; coming to chain restaurants, supermarkets, convenience stores, movie theaters, and other similar chain retail food establishments near you by May, 2017.
It will have been seven years since CSPI and other NANA members worked with Congress to pass the national menu labeling law, as part of the Affordable Care Act. The latest delay is largely due to Domino's Pizza, convenience stores, and supermarkets that worked with Congress to insert a rider in the FY2016 Omnibus Appropriations Act to delay implementation of the law until one year from the release of FDA's final guidance.
Today, the FDA released the final guidance which will set a date certain for implementation in early May, 2017 (the date one year from publication of the guidance in the federal register, which will be during the first week of May).
Thank you to the many who have worked on and supported menu labeling efforts. The first set of state and local policies on menu labeling were introduced in 2003, with over 20 passing, laying the groundwork for the national menu labeling law in 2010. Most recently, several NANA members helped oppose the anti-menu labeling bills in the House and the Senate, and galvanized Members of Congress to send letters requesting FDA finalize the guidance, and organizing over 10,000 individuals to contact HHS and FDA.
As we move toward implementation of national menu labeling, we will share more details on a national awareness campaign spearheaded by ChildObesity180, CSPI and the FDA to help customers understand and use the calorie and other nutrition information.

In 2010, a group of public and private organizations banded together to develop and release the first National Physical Activity Plan, a blueprint for getting Americans to move more. But since the release of the plan, physical activity levels in the United States have barely budged, and for many people, they have declined. Today the alliance released a new National Physical Activity Plan, with updated priorities, a broader focus on minorities with the addition of a diversity committee, and more recommendations and advice for how people might encourage physical activity in their communities and schools. To an outsider, the first 10 minutes of every school day at Bonny Slope Elementary in Beaverton, Oregon, look like pandemonium. Not a single kid is seated. The teachers are bopping along, too, trying to keep pace with the youngsters. With just 10 minutes of movement, everyone is starting the day with a mental and physical boost. By the end of each week, they've piled up 50 minutes of physical activity in an easy, fun way that costs pennies. MORE

The NFL, USA Football, GENYOUth and Fuel Up to Play 60 announced the expansion of the Fuel Up to Play 60 NFL FLAG Essentials program, the partners' commitment to increase physical activity of youth, with the distribution of NFL FLAG Essentials Kits to 4,000 schools nationwide, reaching 1.5 million new students and doubling the number of resources provided in the first two years of the program. In 2014, the NFL and GENYOUth developed a turn-key approach to the crisis in physical inactivity by supporting America's PE teachers with resources to help students build a foundation for healthy, lifelong physical activity through football. A report released this month finds that most states are lagging behind when it comes to meeting recommendations for physical education. In fact, SHAPE America's 2016 Shape of the Nation report found that only Iowa and the District of Columbia require the amount of weekly physical education time recommended by national experts at the elementary and middle school levels. "There are people who think marching band and R.O.T.C. are a substitute for physical education," said Jackie Lund, the president of SHAPE America. "A lot of people think it's just about being active, but good physical education should have a strong educative component where we're teaching kids new things." MORE

According to a report in March from the Guttmacher Institute, an advocacy group that focuses on reproductive health, 26 states still require high school health courses to stress abstinence as the best way to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and avoid becoming the victim of sexual violence. Lack of information has consequences: States with abstinence-only education have the highest rates of teen pregnancy. MORE

Teenage drinking: Who's trying alcohol sooner?
Teenage girls in the United States now start to drink alcohol sooner than boys do, a new study shows. "This is becoming a public health issue," said lead researcher Dr. Hui Cheng, an adjunct assistant professor at Michigan State University.
"We really don't know why girls are surpassing boys -- that's the next question we want to answer," she said.
Among the possible explanations, according to Cheng, is that drinking has become more socially acceptable. Also, because girls typically reach puberty sooner, some start engaging in risky behaviors such as drinking earlier. It might also be that younger girls are spending time with older boys, "so there is more exposure to drinking," she added. MORE

Sleepy teens are risk-taking teens
Sleep-deprived high school students are more likely to sustain injuries -- often due to risky behaviors -- than those who are well rested, U.S. health officials reported Thursday.
