Let's talk about LMAS! Don't know what that is?? It stands for "Let's Move Active Schools." Recently

Last FYI I spoke about ESSA..."Every Student Succeeds Act," a bill that has been passed by BOTH
both houses of Congress. The following are resources for information on ESSA and FUNDING for your program:

REMEMBER: FOR THE FIRST TIME
you are now part of a student's "THE WELL-ROUNDED" education! Make sure to track funding coming into your district with regards to Title I; Title II; Title IV Part A and B and that YOU COUNT!

If you were not able to attend SHAPE America's National Convention in Minneapolis, MN know that you were well represented by many NJAHPERD members both as presenters and conventioneers. NJAHPERD Teachers of the Year (2015) Colleen McCurry (Middle School, Wycoff School District) and Arvin Arjona (Dance, Millburn School District) both presented at multiple sessions. Three ALL Convention Sessions showcased: "Fuel Up to Play 60" with Jon Ashton and Pittsburgh Steelers "The BUS" Jerome Bettis, Chris Waddell "Athletes for HOPE" the most decorated U.S. Paralympic Sit-skier; Tom Rath a New York Times Best Selling Author speaking on "putting your own health first in order to ensure you are 'fully charged' in your personal and professional life;" and finally "Every Child Succeeds Act" speaking about this landmark legislation.

Our professions are at a LANDMARK CROSSROADS! Please make sure to GOOGLE and investigate all of this current information that will enhance your career!

Project ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously), a signature program of the Youth Fitness Coalition, Inc. Project ACES was created by NJ physical education teacher Len Saunders in 1989 as a method of motivating children to exercise. ACES takes place on the first Wednesday in May as part of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month along with National Physical Education Week. It has been labeled as "the world's largest exercise class" by the media. Since 1989, millions of children from all over the world exercise together to promote proper health and fitness habits. With the obesity epidemic facing the youth of the world, children's fitness plays a major role in fighting heart disease. MORE

It's April and that means it's time to inventory your physical education/physical activity equipment andsee what you have or need to order for next year. Do you look at your equipment room at the end of the year and feel a little overwhelmed? Did some of your equipment grow legs and run away? Why bother doing a year-end inventory anyway? Chances are by the end of the year counting of all your equipment and taking a physical inventory will be an exhausting and time consuming process.

How do you calculate maximum heart rate (MHR)? The 220-minus-age equation is regularly used to estimate an individual's maximum heart rate and some believe it is invalid for this specific purpose. Some believe there is no equation that accurately estimates an individual's MHR or any other human biomarker, including blood pressure or cholesterol levels. In Physical Education student's grades are sometimes based on their time in a "target zone," which can be unfair when using a one-size-fits-all calculation. Heart Zones believe that student's MHR is different and as a result every student's training zones are different.

ESSA
In looking ahead to the sunset of the PEP grant program, funding opportunities for health and physical education programs will now be available under the newly passed Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
To ensure full implementation of the legislation, appropriators in Congress have changed the timeline for accessing these funds so states and school districts have ample planning time. The 2016-2017 school year will be a transition year for states and school districts.

In July 2016, federal education funding will be distributed to states using No Child Left Behindformulas, and states will use the 2016-2017 school year to complete ESSA's required plans and needs assessments ahead of the 2017-2018 school year.

In July 2017, funding will be distributed to states using ESSA formulas, which will include the new funding for Title IV, Part A block grants for Student Supports and Academic Enrichment Grants.

Since announcing 50 Million Strong (50MS) to great fanfare at last year's national convention, SHAPE America board members and staff have made every effort to explain exactly what it is . Collectively, we've traveled thousands of miles, devoted hundreds of hours, and spoken countless times in an effort to mobilize the physical education and health education professions to support what is in reality a revolutionary change in what we do. Clearly however, communicating exactly what this change means to others is not easy. In this blog post, SHAPE America President Steve Jefferies explains what 50MS really is. MORE

Students, teachers and families need to find ways to cope with preparing for and tackling the monumental standardized exams, and one proven method involves exercise and physical activity. Playlist of the Month - April

Utilizing music in a physical education lesson is not a new concept. Physical educators that
already use music know that there are numerous benefits and research supports the pairing of music and movement. They go hand in hand.

Music can serve as a time management tool, it can be an instructional source, a motivator and
can help create an enjoyable and positive learning environment for their students.

I have always used music in my teaching. However, over the years my approach to lesson
planning has transformed as I have seen the positive impact that music can have on a lesson.  When I create a lesson,I not only select a song for it's beat and duration but also how it
matches the activity and theme of the lesson.  I select music as I am in the planning process,
not after. I know now how much music can enhance the learning environment and create opportunities for students to learn. MORE

All schools that meet the requirements and submit a complete application will receive an award package and large banner to recognize their commitment to quality physical education and physical activity before, during and after the school day.

It is possible for every school in a district to receive this award, but each school must submit their own online application. Please encourage your eligible schools to submit their online application by April 15, 2016. The award is valid for two years; 2015 awarded recipients should not apply.
