A message from your president...
Hello, from the Jersey Shore! SO...WHAT'S UP IN OUR PROFESSION? SOOOO MUCH YOU WON'T BELIEVE! WHAT A TREMENDOUS TIME FOR HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATORS!
FIRST: "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND"" is REPLACED by EVERY STUDENT SUCCEEDS ACT or ESSA" where HEALTH and PHYSICAL EDUCATION have become part of the term "well-rounded education." The term "Core Academic Subjects" is no longer used. ~On March 1-2, 2016 a formidable group of NJAHPERD members descended upon Capitol Hill to visit with the Congressmen of New Jersey to reinforce our position on the ESSA (Every Child Succeeds Act) to ask for FULL appropriation funding of this bill. (as written the full appropriation was for 1.65 billion for Fiscal Year 2017) NJAHPERD members who participated in "SPEAK OUT DAY" I wish to THANK are:
Jackie Malaska, Executive Director, NJAHPERD Carol Lynch, Immediate Past President and Advocacy Champion JoAnn Doherty, Past President, NJAHPERD Christine Baccarella, President, NJAHPERD Ted Olsen, NJAHPERD, Elementary TOY Lois Joyce, NJAHPERD, Middle School TOY John Smith, NASPE TOY, 1989 Ellie Abdi, East Orange Schools, MSU Cathy Chichester, Flaghouse, Inc.
~What a PHENOMENAL TIME we had meeting with members of the U.S. Congress (and their representatives) and speaking to them about ESSA. We were able to REACH OUT to BOTH Senators offices and 7 of the 12 offices of our representatives. Not a bad day's work!
~ESSA you ask? What is THAT? PLEASE go to SHAPE America's website and DOWNLOAD the e-guide "Getting Started With ESSA-A GUIDE FOR HEALTH and PHYSICAL EDUCATORS." This amazing document will give you everything you need to know about ESSA's TIMELINE and its IMPLICATIONS for H&PE. ~NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND is REPLACED by EVERY STUDENT SUCCEEDS ACT ~Funding from the former PEP Grants (Carol M. White) have become part of Title IV.
~All school districts will be able to access funding through Title I, II and IV Part A. Make sure you check to see the status of your school as part of Title I funding! SECOND: If you have NOT received a copy of NJAHPERD'S SEQUENTIAL GUIDELINES please go to: www.njahperd.org under RESOURCES and download a copy. This phenomenal document will make your unit and lesson planning a SNAP as it is aligned with BOTH the NJCCCS and SHAPE America National Standards. The SEQUENTIAL GUIDELINE CHART is a "living document" and NJAHPERD appreciates your comments and contributions to its evolution! April 18, 2016 Long Branch High School Long Branch, NJ No registration fee. NJAHPERD membership required for H&PE professionals/students. PLEASE do so ASAP!
Until next time...SHINE ON!! Remember,"there is no better exercise for strengthening the heart than reaching down and lifting up another." Christine Baccarella

In a basement gymnasium at New Jersey's School 15, a group of fifth-graders spent an hour taking their first lesson on how to dance the rumba. This was not an easy exercise for the youths, starting with the necessity that they form pairs with members of the opposite sex and then actually touch each other. Some of the children followed the dance directions casually. Others seemed uncomfortable. MORE

Pilates
ilates was created by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Pilates believed concentrating on singular muscle movements and building a "powerhouse" of core muscles will cause good health and energy to flow from one's core to their entire being. For this reason, common pilates exercises focus on strengthening the body's center, which encompasses the abdomen, lower and upper back, hips, buttocks, and inner thighs.
There are 6 principles of Pilates:
- Concentration
- Control
- Centering
- Flow or Efficiency of Movement
- Precision
- Breathing

New York's East High is putting a priority on gym class in the hope that exciting new units will make students more likely not just to get a passing grade, but also to get out in the community and pick up a new hobby in their personal lives. In the school's first year with the University of Rochester, students are not only ice skating but also practicing yoga, mountain-biking, in-line skating, bowling and playing pickleball. What is more, they're allowed to choose their own activities rather than having them assigned as they were before.MORE
