A message from your president...
Hello, from the Jersey Shore!
I would like to take this opportunity to THANK our 2015-2016 President, Carol Lynch for her OUTSTANDING service to NJAHPERD. Carol graciously "handed off the baton" to me during our Executive Board dinner on Monday, February 23rd. As your new NJAHPERD President, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Christine Baccarella and I am a proud retiree of the Bayonne School District after 40 years of teaching Health and Physical Education and have previously served NJAHPERD as President in 2003.
WOW.....NJAHPERD has OUTDONE itself! What an absolutely AMAZING State Convention we had at the beautiful Ocean Place Resort and Spa on the beach in Long Branch, New Jersey. Here are some of the HIGHLIGHTS:

This convention also officially introduced NJAHPERD's SEQUENTIAL GUIDELINES for K-12 PHYSICAL EDUCATION. This living document was developed by a committee of Health and Physical Education professionals representing all grade levels under the direction of chairperson, President Carol Lynch. The committee used the NJCCCS and the SHAPE America National Standards in the development of these new guidelines. The values of this new resource include: planning & teaching for the progression of learning through the grade levels; consistency of teaching skills and concepts within school districts; and, curriculum development.
PLEASE get to the SHAPE America website and find out about the new National Initiative
Well, it's OFF TO WASHINGTON, DC for several of us as we attend SHAPE America's "SPEAK Out! Day." We will be visiting with New Jersey's Legislators speaking about current issues in both Health and Physical Education that directly affect the students of our GREAT STATE.

It's not too early to put this special day on your calendar!Project ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously), a signature program of the Youth Fitness Coalition, Inc. Project ACES was created by NJ physical education teacher Len Saunders in 1989 as a method of motivating children to exercise. ACES takes place on the first Wednesday in May as part of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month along with National Physical Education Week. It has been labeled as "the world's largest exercise class" by the media. Since 1989, millions of children from all over the world exercise together to promote proper health and fitness habits. With the obesity epidemic facing the youth of the world, children's fitness plays a major role in fighting heart disease. MORE

For the 25th consecutive year, sixth-graders from New Jersey's Dawes Avenue Elementary and Jordan Road schools had the opportunity for hands-on outdoor education at the New Jersey School of Conservation at Stokes State Forest. While many of the midwinter trips have had ice and snow, which allowed students to go ice fishing and snowshoeing, this year's milder temperatures gave them the opportunity to enjoy other outdoor activities including orienteering, rock wall climbing, conservation photography, black bear ecology, beaver ecology and survival techniques. The amount of time students spend doing physical activity in school appears to be linked to higher standardized math scores in D.C. schools, according to a new American University study that examined the success of the city's Healthy Schools Act and found that schools offering more physical activity had significantly better math success. Since the Healthy Schools Act was passed, the District's schools have been required to incrementally increase the amount of physical education offered to elementary and middle school students each year. If there's one thing Heather Myrick has noticed in the dance classes she teaches as an alternative to physical education at California's Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, it's that many students relish the time devoted to yoga. So Myrick wrote a proposal a year ago to potentially add yoga as an official course for high school students to take as an alternative to physical education. The Board of Education signed off on the course to begin in the fall.MORE

While ADHD is a popular subject for the research community, many teachers and parents still do not understand the condition and all the ways it affects young people at home and in school. Many think it is simply about kids who can't focus on their work or sit still, but there is a great deal more to it, experts say, and student achievement in school suffers because the condition is misunderstood. Childhood obesity is a serious problem in the United States. Despite recent declines in the prevalence among preschool-aged children, obesity among children is still too high. For children and adolescents aged 2-19 years, the prevalence of obesity has remained fairly stable at about 17 percent and 12.7 million children and adolescents for the past decade. To combat this problem, mindfulness-based interventions targeting eating behaviors have gained popularity in recent years. MORE

Many consider electronic cigarettes, or e-cigs, to be a positive aid in the cessation of conventional tobacco-burning cigarettes. However, a recent meta-analysis study reported no significant difference in the efficacy of using nicotine e-cigs to stop smoking tobacco-burning cigarettes when compared to other therapies or placebo. While the upside of e-cigs requires further study, the downside is being recognized and warrants further attention.READ MORE

In a study reported in the journal Pediatrics, researchers led by Dr. Marc DeBoer, associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Virginia, found encouraging news about some obesity-related health conditions. They analyzed data involving about 5,000 teens for signs of metabolic syndrome, a condition that increases risk of heart disease and includes obesity, high blood sugar, high levels of triglycerides (which mostly come from starches and carbohydrates), high blood pressure and low levels of the good cholesterol HDL. Overall, DeBoer found that severity of metabolic syndrome - or how deeply entrenched these risk factors were for the teens - declined between 1999 and 2012, even while their BMI, a measure of height and weight, increased. The more obsessed that college athletes are with their sport, the more likely they are to approve of using performance-enhancing drugs, a new Canadian study finds. Two types of passion are associated with sports, the University of Waterloo researchers explained. "Harmonious passion" involves feelings of enjoyment, and the sport blends with the athlete's life. "Obsessive passion" means not being able to disconnect from a sport and having feelings of guilt when not participating. READ MORE
