A Team Approach to School Wellness

Abby Attias, Kristina Knight, Center for Supportive Schools                                                                      Sue Cornell, YMCA Healthy U
"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." This African proverb offers the reason that School Wellness Teams were developed - educators have greater impact if they collaborate for the sake of student (and faculty) wellness. Learn about the successes and challenges of schools that are currently taking this team approach. Explore, too, the value of double-teaming your district by implementing best practice school wellness actions at the same time as striving to institute powerful, district-level wellness policies.

The workshop will introduce attendees to resources and best practice in pedestrian and bicycle education and innovative ideas in policy change. Participants will walk away with an understanding of age-appropriate skills and curriculum and ideas how to incorporate physical activity into safety lessons. In addition, presenters will discuss ways to provide on-bike education and highlight instances where bicycle education classes and programs have been targeted to children with disabilities. Hands-on lessons will be showcased.

Promoting the Physically Active School
John Smith, FlagHouse
This full participation session provides the physical education teacher with activities to promote a physically active school learning environment both in the gymnasium and in the classroom. Activities will include lessons on cross curricular activities, lessons to strengthen your "core" curriculum and lessons you can share with your classroom teachers to help promote a physically active school. Students learn better when they are physically active. Test scores rise after physical activity. Schools are more successful when the physical education program is coordinated throughout the whole school building. Bring back lessons for your classroom teachers. Join us in this activity session and begin the road to the Physically Active School in your district.

Transforming Classroom Engagement with Interactive Physical Activity Breaks
Jeff LeClair, GoNoodle Participants will learn: What GoNoodle is, how it works and why it's a must-have resource with over 200K teachers. GoNoodle can show how to integrate movement with learning using interactive games kids love. It can also provide strategies to weave physical activity into the school day to improve student engagement, behavior and performance.
