News YOU can USE!

The Department of Health and Human Services announced its intent to establish the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee and to invite nominations for the Committee. The Committee, once chartered, will examine the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans; conduct a series of systematic reviews to evaluate available evidence (assisted by a literature review team); and analyze the evidence and weigh its quality to support conclusions to physical activity and health research questions. The Committee's work with culminate in a scientific advisory report submitted to the Secretary of HHS in late 2017/early 2018. MORE

The way you train in 2016 may look completely different from in the past. Based on new research and other developments, the strength and conditioning industry is rapidly evolving, which directly affects how you work out and improve your performance.

Trends typically begin at elite performance facilities and gradually trickle down through the ranks. To help you get some insight into where the industry is heading, we compiled seven fitness trends for the new year. MORE

In one sense, recess at Eagle Mountain Elementary School in Fort Worth, Texas is different. That's because recess happens a lot there - four times a day, 15 minutes a pop for kindergartners and first-graders. Eagle Mountain is part of a project in which the school day is modeled after the Finnish school system, which consistently scores at or near the top in international education rankings. The project's designer is Texas Christian University kinesiologist Debbie Rhea, a SHAPE America member. MORE
Hitting the Slopes? Here's How to Have Fun and Stay Safe

Many families and outdoor enthusiasts hit the slopes this time of year. Skiing and snowboarding are fun for people of all ages, but you need to know how to keep yourself and others safe on crowded mountains, according to Nemours Health.

Having the right clothes and equipment can protect skiers and snowboarders from low temperatures and injuries. In addition to warm clothing, proper boots, poles, goggles and a helmet specifically designed for skiing or snowboarding are essential. MORE
Texas School Triples Recess Time And Sees Immediate Positive Results In Kids

Recess is a lot more than just a free break for kids to play after lunch period. That free, unstructured play time allows kids to exercise and helps them focus better when they are in class. Now a school in Texas says it took a risk by giving students four recess periods a day, but the risk has paid off beautifully. MORE
All is love...even math

A few weeks ago, I went into Chase's class for tutoring.

I'd emailed Chase's teacher one evening and said, "Chase keeps telling me that this stuff you're sending home is math - but I'm not sure I believe him. Help, please." She emailed right back and said, "No problem! I can tutor Chase after school anytime." And I said, "No, not him. Me. He gets it. Help me." And that's how I ended up standing at a chalkboard in an empty fifth grade classroom staring at rows of shapes that Chase's teacher kept referring to as "numbers."  MORE
Can exercise really make you grow new brain cells?

Wendy Suzuki, was on a river rafting trip in Peru, when she had a major wakeup call. Suzuki found that she was the weakest person on the expedition, an observation that bothered her given that she was only in her mid-thirties at the time. But Suzuki also wasn't all that surprised. A professor of neural science and psychology at New York University, she had been spending all her time in the research lab. "I was in New York, in my lab, eating takeout, and gaining weight," says Suzuki.

When she got back from Peru, she decided to change her lifestyle. Suzuki started going to the gym regularly and after a few months, she noticed changes that, as a neuroscientist, piqued her interest. For one, her mood shifted and she felt generally happier. Then one day, while working on a research grant, she surprised herself. "I was sitting in my office and I noticed something I hadn't noticed before: My writing was going well. Typically, writing never goes well," she says. "I'm a neuroscientist. My memory is better; my attention is better; my mood is better." At the time, she asked herself: "What do we know about this?" MORE

Health Educator News YOU can USE!

Middle-school students in urban areas may benefit from in-school mindfulness programs, a new study suggests. Students taking a mindfulness-based stress reduction program during the school day ended up with less symptoms of stress and trauma than children attending classes on health topics, researchers found. MORE

Beginning in 2012, a federal law went into effect to improve the nutritional quality of school lunches. The law appears to be working, according to a new report. For one year before the program started, and for one year after, researchers collected data on food selection in three middle schools and three high schools in urban school districts in Washington State. On a 100-point scale that measures the amounts of six essential nutrients consumed, students scored a mean of 58.7 before the new law and 75.6 after, and calorie content per weight of food consumed decreased significantly. MORE
E-cigarette ads and youth

About 2.4 million middle and high school students were current (past 30-day) users of electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, in 2014. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which causes addiction, may harm brain development, and could lead to continued tobacco product use among youth. Tobacco product advertising can entice youth to use tobacco, and spending to advertise e-cigarettes has increased rapidly since 2011. About 69% of middle and high school students were exposed to e-cigarette advertisements in retail stores, on the Internet, in magazines/newspapers, or on TV/movies. Exposure to e-cigarette advertisements may be contributing to increases in e-cigarette use among youth. Efforts by states, communities, and others could reduce this exposure. MORE
Bullying during teen years linked to health problems for adults

Bullying during adolescence may be tied to health problems that follow teens into adulthood, a Canadian study suggests.

Researchers who followed 662 youth for a decade starting when they were between 12 and 19 years old found that both physical and emotional bullying was linked with difficulties such as headaches, dizziness, backaches, insomnia, abdominal pain and poor body image.

Even emotional taunts predicted physical health problems in adulthood, researchers reported in the Journal of Adolescent Health. MORE
Cool Kids Can Curb Bullying, Study Finds

Schools may have more success curbing incidents of bullying if their most social students take an anti-bullying stance as opposed to teachers and administrators setting blanket rules and regulations against it.

That's the new finding from a group of researchers from Princeton University, Rutgers University and Yale University whose study shows that when students are the ones to take a stand against bullying - as opposed to adults in the school - it's significantly more impactful.

Over the course of the 2012-2013 school year, 56 New Jersey middle schools that armed their most influential students with social media training and various bullying awareness gear, like bright-colored wrist bands, saw a 30 percent reduction in student conflict reports.

Research

Children spend more time taking part in physical activities and less time being sedentary when their parents participate in the activities, according to a study in The Journal of Pediatrics. Researchers also found children are more active when parents actively watch their children playing, compared with leaving them alone to play. MORE

Most parents with one or more school-age children say it is easy to find after-school activities and programs in their community, and this is reflected in the fact that most parents say their children participated in some form of extracurricular activity in the 12 months prior to the survey. Sports or athletic activities are the most popular, but at least half of parents say their children ages 6 to 17 have participated in religious instruction, taken music, dance or art lessons, or done volunteer work.
