OPEN has one mission: to improve the effectiveness of physical education for every child. We help teachers help their students by providing rigorous, outcomes-based curriculum tools to every physical education teacher - no exceptions.

Equity of Access is essential for empowering the entire physical education community. US Games believes in the talents and creativity of the teachers and administrators that we serve. That's why OPEN will always be free to every educator. This is not an ideal or philosophy. It's a movement.

OPEN is a backward designed curriculum project that targets SHAPE America's National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes. MORE

Playing active video games that encourage dancing and low-intensity activity may actually help overweight and obese kids lose weight, according to researchers at Baton Rouge, Louisiana's Pennington Biomedical Research Center. With children spending about eight hours a day in front of screens - TVs, video games or computers - using video games to help kids lose fat or maintain a healthy weight is practical, said Amanda Staiano, a Pennington researcher studying video games' effect on obesity. A few years ago, difficult conversations were taking place in Minnesota's Westonka School District about the future of physical education. After doing research and looking into companies that offer wearable, smart technology, Westonka officials decided Heart Zones would also be a good fit in the district. After the technology was introduced to students, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Mark Femrite said, the district's middle school physical education teachers have told him they wouldn't want to go back to a time without the devices. A group of seventh-graders began a third period PE class at Connecticut's Nathan Hale Middle School recently by doing chair aerobics with senior citizens as a 1960s song about physical education blared from the speakers. Seniors and students later walked arm-in-arm, doing laps around the school's gymnasium. Physical education teachers at Nathan Hale recently created a partnership with Maplewood at Strawberry Hill, an assisted living facility about a half-mile from the school. MORE

Hands waved in the air as the pumped-up crowd sang a loud chorus of "Sweet Caroline," directed by coach Steve Woll in Montana's Ronan Performing Arts Center. The annual Lip Sync contest culminates a physical education segment that allows both artsy-types and athletes to create a dance routine to a popular song, then the top ten perform for the whole school. Some of the performances were definitely a workout. MORE

Why High School Students Don't Intervene To Stop Dating Violence

The overwhelmingly majority of teens witness dating aggression or sexual violence among their peers, but many choose not to intervene - sometimes because they want to avoid drama, sometimes because they want to fuel drama, and sometimes because they're afraid of second-guessing a more popular kid. Look for your copy in the mail!
This calendar was written and designed by a Defensive Driving Instructor to combat the #1 Killer of 15-20 year olds in the U.S., by teaching K-12 students about how to  avoid what causes 90% of crashes...Mental Error.

In addition, the calendar aims to alert Educators and Parents about the deadliest times of year (Prom
Season, Summer Vacation etc.) for our Teenage Drivers.

Lesson/PowerPoints/Videos

National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) summarized the national fatality numbers:  http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/812217.pdf

Are we addressing the risks in our curriculum?
■ Drunk-driving crashes continue to represent roughly one-third of fatalities, resulting in 9,967 deaths.
■ 49 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed were not wearing seat belts.
■ Distracted driving accounted for 10 percent of all crash fatalities, killing 3,179 people in 2014.
■ Drowsy driving accounted for 2.6 percent of all crash fatalities; at least 846 people died in these crashes in 2014.
■ The number of motorcyclists killed was far higher in states without strong helmet laws, resulting in 1,565 lives lost.
■ Cyclist deaths declined by 2.3 percent, but pedestrian deaths rose by 3.1 percent from the previous year. 2014, there were 726 cyclists and 4,884 pedestrians killed in motor vehicle crashes
Distracted driving

Distracted driving accounted for 10 percent of all crash fatalities, killing 3,179 people in 2014. Here is a link to five exercises you can use to raise teens' awareness of distracted driving as well as lesson plans, PowerPoints, and videos. MORE
Music distractions

Ask your students their favorite songs and compare what researchers identified as the "world's safest driving song": (I still like "Sweet Home Alabama").  Use a video of an intersection.  Have the students identify the risks with their song as compared to the researcher's safest song. MORE
Seat Belts

49 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed were not wearing seat belts.  Primary vs secondary law. In 2013, 883 unbelted back seat passengers 8 years of age and older died in traffic crashes in the U.S. More than 400 of these peoplewould have survived if they had been properly restrained. There are a number of strategies that states can employ to address the issue starting with requiring all passengers, regardless of seating position to buckle up and making it a primary law. (GDL requires all passengers to be belted). (http://www.ghsa.org/files/pubs/RearBelts_FINAL.pdf).

NJ requires adults 18 and older riding in the back seat to buckle up, but it is a secondary rather than primary law. This means a police officer can't stop and cite the unbelted adult passenger unless the driver is committing a motor vehicle violation. Closing that loophole is important since 18-20 year olds account for the greatest number of teen driver crashes and fatalities in NJ.  And despite being fully licensed, a teen is still at risk so all passengers should buckle up!
Tire Safety Module

FREE Lesson Plans, PowerPoints and Videos. To reduce preventable crashes, Michelin and ADTSEA published the first national tire-safety training module for driving instructors.  This update standardizes tire-safety education materials and provides a collection of new resources, including videos and hands-on exercises for instructors and students.
