Health & PE Exemplar Practices Ad Hoc Committee

The goal of this ad-hoc committee is to generate a list of exemplar practices that occur in Health & Physical Education.  This may contain quality and up-to-date teaching practices or program requirements (e.g., enhancing all 5 health-related fitness components during fitness instruction, effective assessment/evaluation practices, criteria for facilities and equipment, program involvement, required minutes in PE obtainment, PTO involvement, etc).  The standards should be attainable and not overbearing while adequately illustrating what a quality Health & Physical Education program should look like.  This list will be provided to the NJAHPERD Executive Board by Jan 13th.

We would like a range of expertise and experience (short & long) to join this committee.  We probably would need to meet in person at least 1 time (meet somewhere centrally located, of course) before the Jan 13th Executive Board meeting.

If you are interested in becoming a member of this Ad Hoc committee, please respond with the area in which you have experience and for how long:

Higher Education, Secondary, Elementary, Administration

In September, Terri Drain presented a fantastic webinar on how to plan a standards-based lesson. You can find her webinar on SPARKecademy.org in the free webinar section. It is so critically important to look at the big picture of teaching to ensure that students understand what is expected of them. Terri's approach helps educator's breakdown what standards-based teaching looks and feels like in order to help students achieve success.

Join Andy Vasily (@andyvasily) as he presents a follow up webinar to look at the process through the eyes of the student and how we can best involve them in the journey of unpacking essential student learning outcomes. Through the use of provocation, questioning, exploration, and inquiry, students do the heavy lifting in regards to identifying what is most important to know, understand, and be able to do in the units that we teach in our physical education programs. Andy's ultimate objective is to getstudents to take ownership of these important learning outcomes straight away in physical education.

Attendees will:
-See how Andy has done this in his physical education program
-Be provided with examples of this in action in the schools that Andy consults for around the world

SAMHSA and the American School Health Association presented a webinar titled "Bullying Prevention and Suicide Prevention for Schools: A Digital Approach From SAMHSA(link is external)."

The webinar showcased SAMHSA's mobile applications-KnowBullying(link is external) and Suicide Safe(link is external)-and other key resources as tools to promote bullying prevention and suicide prevention in schools.

Teenagers Aren't Getting Enough Exercise at School, or Anywhere

Teenagers can be a notoriously sedentary group. Now a new study showed that school may be a big part of the problem.

The study, which used GPS devices to track when and where teenagers were getting physical activity, found that, on average, they were physically active only 23 minutes a day while at school. Meager as that figure is, it made up over half the 39.4 minutes of physical activity the average teenager got every day. MORE

Remember that test you had to take in fifth grade, when you stretched your legs under a table and your arms over it, reaching as far as possible? Yeah, kids are still doing a version of that. It's called the "back-saver sit and reach," and it's part of the annual physical fitness test California administers to students to test whether children are healthy enough or need improvement in the areas of aerobic capacity, muscle and skeletal function and body composition. MORE

Dave Foster remembers how it was when he was a youngster. He was interested in hunting and fishing, but he had no one to mentor him. That's why the football coach and teacher has started a unique outdoors education program through the PE department at Dodge City High School. MORE

Women are more prone than men to suffer many of the most common sports-related injuries. There are a variety of reasons for this "gender gap," and there is much about it that remains uncertain. But the recognition of this gap has led to innovative efforts to prevent injuries among women in sports. MORE

Doctor's Orders: Prescribe Exercise To Patients, Make Physical Activity A Vital Sign

Imagine stepping into the exam room for your regular medical check-up: Your doctor (or an assistant) uses a cuff to check your blood pressure. A thermometer to check your temperature. A stethoscope to listen to your breathing. And then, to check one more vital sign, a simple question: So what are you doing for exercise?

That's an ideal reality envisioned by a team of researchers and physicians who just issued a "call to action" to colleagues. They urge that exercise counseling become a central component of every medical visit, including by making physical activity a vital sign and prescribing a specific amount of daily exercise to all patients. Research

Being bullied in childhood has been associated with increased risk for anxiety, depression and even eating disorders. But according to new research, it's not only the victims who could be at risk psychologically, but also the bullies themselves. Researchers at Duke Medicine and the University of North Carolina School of Medicine were surprised to find that in a study of 1,420 children, those who bullied others were twice as likely to display symptoms of bulimia, such as bingeing and purging, when compared to children who are not involved in bullying. MORE

Electronic devices aimed at boosting the brain power of young children could be doing more harm than good, researchers at the University of Alberta have found. Most studies into the impact of watching TV or using electronic toys and apps have determined time spent in front of screens doesn't help brain development of pre-schoolers and might hurt it, physical education and recreation assistant professor Valerie Carson said. MORE

Federal Legislation Updates

On December 10th, President Obama, signed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) - the long overdue reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, replacing No Child Left Behind. President Obama is scheduled to sign the bill into law on December 10.
As a result of  this legislation, the role of both school health and physical education has been elevated and acknowledged as part of a student's "well-rounded" education.
How does this impact school health and physical education?
  • The term "well-rounded education" replaces the term "core subjects" that was used in previous Elementary and Secondary Education Act proposals.
  • School health, physical education and physical activity programs will have access to significant funding under Title IV of the bill.
  • Block grants will be distributed to states under the Safe and Healthy Students program.
Thank you to all NJAHPERD members who have communicated relentlessly with their members of Congress, participated in SPEAK Out! Day and worked tirelessly to gain support for the inclusion of these critical subjects in federal education law.

Be sure to attend SPEAK Out! Day March 1-2, 2016, to ensure your members of Congress support implementation of ESSA in your state.

2016 SPEAK Out! Day
Registration opens on the SHAPE America website on December 14, 2015.
Please request your professional days now for, March 1-2, 2016. Retirees and Future Professionals, this is a great opportunity for you to get involved and SPEAK Out about your profession.

Contact Jackie Malaska after you have registered with SHAPE America for a Travel Scholarship Application. Last year, we had nine NJAHPERD members (7 professionals and 2 future professionals) attend. Our goal this year is to double the number and visit all our New Jersey Federal Legislators.
