A message from your president...
Hello Everyone,

Thank you so much for your support of the Recess and Certification Bills in the past. The Recess Bill A-4044/S-1594 is up for a vote before the full General Assembly this Thursday, December 3rd. This legislation would require a daily 20 minute recess period in public schools in New Jersey.

Please take a few minutes to call your Assembly members to ask them to support this Bill. If you do not know who your two Assembly members are, please click on this link:  http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/members/legsearch.asp  On the right side of the page, you can search for your Assembly members by municipality, just click on the link at the right and follow the instructions.

When you call, identify your name/town, and why you are so interested in this issue. Let your Assembly members know that studies show that a daily recess period is important for children's physical, emotional, social and cognitive development.  For that reason, many organizations, not only NJAHPERD, but also the NJ PTA, NJ chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the NJ YMCA State Alliance and the NJEA all support the bill.

At the end of your call, ask the Assembly member to please vote "yes" on bill A-4044/S-1594 at the Assembly Voting Session on Thursday, December 3rd.

Thank you for doing your part to move the recess bill forward to benefit our students!

As always, take advantage of your NJAHPERD membership! We are here if you need us!

To Health & Happiness!
Carol Lynch
President, NJAHPERD

FIT2ECSELL - FitnessGram Grants

Grant funding is available for training and web based FG school site license. More information and application

When Catherine Ramstetter, who researches health promotion in schools, started studying recess nearly a decade ago, she expected that the recreational time would help kids get some of the moderate to vigorous exercise they need. By the time she and pediatrician Robert Murray authored a policy statement for the AAP in 2012, it was clear that recess offers much more than a chance for kids to work up a sweat. MORE
School-Based Physical Fitness Link to Academic Outcomes

The National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments (NCSSLE) just released a new brief, School-Based Physical Fitness and the Link to Student Academic Outcomes and Improved School Climate, outlining the growing body of evidence related to the value of school-based physical fitness. The brief outlines research suggesting that physical activity (PA) and physical education (PE) programming offered within the context of the school day are not only essential for children's healthy development, but are positively linked to children's academic achievement. In addition the report indicates that, when carefully designed and implemented, these activities have the potential to positively impact school climate and conditions for learning in schools. MORE
Why so many kids can't sit still in school today

The Centers for Disease Control tells us that in recent years there has been a jump in the percentage of young people diagnosed with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, commonly known as ADHD: 7.8 percent in 2003 to 9.5 percent in 2007 and to 11 percent in 2011. The reasons for the rise are multiple, and include changes in diagnostic criteria, medication treatment and more awareness of the condition. In the following post, Angela Hanscom, a pediatric occupational therapist and the founder of TimberNook, a nature-based development program designed to foster creativity and independent play outdoors in New England, suggests yet another reason more children are being diagnosed with ADHD, whether or not they really have it: the amount of time kids are forced to sit while they are in school. This appeared on the TimberNook blog. MORE

Physical Activity: Moving Toward Obesity Solutions

In April 2015, the Institute of Medicine's (IOM's) Roundtable on Obesity Solutions held a 2-day workshop titled "Physical Activity: Moving Toward Obesity Solutions." The workshop was held to:

* provide an expert summary of the state of the science regarding the impact of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity;  and
* highlight innovative strategies for promoting physical activity across different
segments of the population.

Recently the IOM released a summary of the workshop along with an executive summary.

You would think that students from Shanghai, who routinely trounce Americans (and everyone else) in tests of proficiency in math, reading, and science, are tethered to their desks all day, deprived of the freedom to frolic and play. You would be wrong. In Shanghai, 40 percent of the day in elementary school is spent playing, some of it structured but more of it unstructured. That's nearly double the U.S., where 22 percent of the day for elementary school kids is spent on recess. MORE
Keep Moving, Stay Focused: How to Get Your Middle-Schooler Exercising

Exercise is a proven way for your middle-schooler to manage her ADHD. But how do you get her to focus on working out and commit to exercising regularly? One hour of vigorous exercise will give your ADHD child four hours of improved focus, many experts say. But in a world of smartphones, Facebook, and video games - along with cutbacks in phys ed and recess - how do you get your child up and moving? MORE

Even though high schools are developing more sophisticated training and nutrition programs for their student athletes all the time, a growing number of kids are still suffering serious injuries. According to Andrew P. Overman, the senior physical therapist at Hunterdon Sports and Physical Therapy, there's been a tremendous increase in the incidence of overuse injuries over the past several years. MORE

Line dancing, ballet, hip-hop, jazz, cheerleading routines - all ask their performers to train until they move in sync. These workouts offer their performers a good workout. If you've ever tried out the latest diet fad only to find yourself gaining weight and feeling awful and wondered what you were doing wrong, scientists now have an explanation for you. Israeli researchers, writing in the journal Cell this week, have found that different people's bodies respond to eating the same meal very differently - which means that a diet that may work wonders for your best friend may not have the same impact on you. MORE

Drinking just a single energy drink may raise the risk for cardiovascular events among young, healthy adults. This is according to a new study published in JAMA. First author Dr. Anna Svatikova, a cardiology fellow at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and colleagues found that young adults who consumed one 16-ounce energy drink showed a rise in blood pressure and an increase in stress hormone responses within 30 minutes, which may raise cardiovascular risk. MORE

Behind a nondescript door on the gray outside of the University of Minnesota's Williamson Hall lies a lab where a researcher - armed with video game systems and a treadmill - wants to see how video games can positively affect children. Road Warrior: Driver finds life's mission in his tragic mistake

Soccer pro Matt Maher didn't consider himself a killer as he sat in a holding cell a few hours after his Cadillac hit a minivan.

Sure, he'd been drinking. Yes, he was speeding. But he knew his passenger was safe, and although the minivan had flipped, he'd seen its occupants standing on the road. So it was surprising to overhear a dispatcher describe the condition of a crash victim with a word that a motorist in a jail cell never wants to hear:

"Deceased."

"Impossible!" Maher said last week as he recalled his reaction back then for a teen audience in Washington Township. "The weight of that word meant I would always be 'that guy: a killer.' " MORE
