What is a CSPAP?

A Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program (CSPAP) is a multi-component approach by which school districts and schools use all opportunities for students to be physically active, meet the nationally-recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day, and develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to be physically active for a lifetime. A CSPAP reflects strong coordination and synergy across all of the components: physical education as the foundation; physical activity before, during, and after school; staff involvement; and family and community engagement.
Take the lead in your school to become a CHAMPION for physical activity. Visit the SHAPE America website for more information and resources. MORE

When Valley View Elementary School fifth-graders Sarina Dang and Elijah Dor led 60 of their peers through a high-energy workout before the start of school on Sept. 30, they started a wave of physical fitness activities among students across the country. The Valley View students were among those who were participating in a 10-hour coast-to-coast exercise event called Exercise US, which was developed by Montville, New Jersey physical education teacher Leonard Saunders to help battle childhood obesity. Walking a mile a day can stimulate an academic grade A

It appears that a little sweat may well be the secret to lots of academic success in school. According to a recently published story in The Guardian (London, England), for the last three and a half years, school children attending an elementary school in Stirling, England have been running a mile a day while at school.  Besides the obvious health benefits of this daily exercise for the students, the side effects are powerful and eye-opening:  the students' behavior in the classroom and their attention spans have improved.

It's taking less than 15 minutes of the school day for the children to run their daily mile, weather permitting. MORE

According to multiple studies, sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in high school athletes, contributing to roughly 20 percent of the fatalities in sports. It's a silent killer with no real symptoms to prepare for. Most cases are the result of a pre-existing condition that goes undetected. This isn't exclusive to football players. One study found that, on average, a competitive athlete in the United States experiences a sudden cardiac death every three days. MORE

Just because a child suffers a head injury, the diagnosis isn't always a concussion, which doctors describe as a jolt to the head or body that disrupts the function of the brain and causes the brain to move rapidly within the skull. Sometimes, it's simply a bump on the head that will go away pretty quickly. Other times, it's a clear concussion that requires prompt, vigilant attention. Still other times, it's a much worse injury, perhaps even a fatal one. MORE

Active 'brain breaks' increase focus, learning, teachers say

Some Arizona teachers have found that giving their students a "brain break" of a few minutes of physical activity not only gets the wiggles out but also sharpens children's focus and improves their behavior. "I know how antsy I get from sitting too long and understand the students feel the same way," said Pearl Stumpf, a third-grade teacher at from Lone Mountain Elementary School in Cave Creek Unified School District. "The brain breaks aren't anything formal, just a way to rejuvenate our energy." MORE
How to build a circuit training course for kids

Training children in a circuit is a beneficial and time efficient way for them to achieve the fitness goals you want them to reach. As Fabio Camana, M.A., M.S. states, it is a "high volume (repetitions), low resistance (weight) workout with short rest intervals and is geared primarily at improving muscle tone and definition, while improving cardiovascular fitness. This workout involves all major muscle groups (stations) in one continuous cycle, alternating between the different areas to allow for muscle recovery and to force your heart to work harder in pumping blood (and oxygen) to these constantly changing areas." In other words, through circuit training, children will be able to completely hit the most important cylinders of physical fitness: MORE
Get HyPE: Designing #PhysEd Rubrics in Four Easy Steps

The purpose of my Get HyPE column is to raise and discuss topics that will excite and inspire the physical education community. My goal is to encourage you to think about or try something new every month. The name of the column also has a secondary meaning. It includes the name my students call me, "G-H," and the abbreviation for physical education, "PE."

What's keeping me going these days? Rubrics. I'm obsessed with them. I can't stop thinking about them. I can't stop designing them. They're pushing my teaching practice, they're helping me authentically assess my students' learning, and they help me focus on exactly what I want my students to learn each day. Recently, my friends on Twitter have asked me where I get my rubrics. For the most part, I design them myself using four easy steps. MORE

Healthy, happy and ready to learn

Schools play a very important role in helping students develop healthy habits and behaviors through health education programs. Health education helps students develop skills such as goal-setting and decision-making, learn about topics that can affect their health, and develophealth literacy - the ability to access and understand information about one's health to know how to take care of oneself. We also know that healthy students are more ready and able to learn. MORE

Obesity by the numbers
Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. MORE

New Manuals and Test

If you have the new manuals, RO615.  Have you found any more changes than what we included in the last Update?  Just got mine this week.

Remember, there are two questions on the test that were not in last year's manual.  Make certain you discuss:
  • "what happens if you lose your license"; and
  • "if your license is revoked can you get a temporary".
Check your test.  All questions that appear on the test should be from the manual.  If anyone discovers that it is in the new manual, please let me know.

Also, there are opportunities for "Mini Grants" for driver ed teachers in Morris and Sussex Counties! Click here to download the 'Mini Grant' information.
A GREAT Anticipatory Set for your class!

"With more cars with keyless-entry, it is important for teens to be aware of this danger and what a great way to open up your class discussion today! You may want to send their ideas and comments to the Road Warrior at Cichowski@northjersey.com (John Cichowski)."

Did you ever wake up to find that you left your car in the garage with the courtesy lights on all night? No big deal really. We all get distracted and forget something sometimes, and the chances are good that the drain on the battery wouldn't be enough to keep the engine from starting.

But I'm hoping for reader comments on a much more serious forgetfulness issue:

What if you drive a hybrid car and you forget to push the off-button on your keyless electronic ignition? For Mary Rivera, waking up to a dead engine would have been a small price to pay for forgetfulness. The Queens, N.Y., woman was unable to wake up at all in February 2009. Silent, colorless carbon-monoxide fumes from her hybrid in the garage below reached her as she slept. The incident left her with lasting disabilities and killed her longtime companion, 79-year-old Ernest Cordelia Jr.

Rivera, a former schools superintendant, and Cordelia, an attorney, are just two victims of a keyless-ignition problem that has triggered several federal lawsuits following deaths in New York, Pennsylvania, Florida and North Carolina. In most cases, hybrid vehicles, which are powered alternately by batteries and gasoline engines, were kept running after drivers pocketed their electronic fobs and left their cars running silently under battery power. When that power subsided, gas engines kicked in, sending deadly noxious fumes throughout homes including bedrooms with sleeping occupants. In 2011, federal highway safety authorities proposed warning devices to prevent these outcomes, but they haven't been mandated and controversy has erupted over the loudness of existing some devices.

For an upcoming Road Warrior column, I'm asking readers whose cars are equipped with keyless-entry ignitions (especially hybrids) to repond to these questions:

Were you aware of this issue? Is there a device in your vehicle, such as a beeper, that warns you if you walk away without pushing the keyless-entry button? Is it loud enough? Have you ever inadvertently left the engine running? If so, what were the circumstances and the outcome? Do you know of anyone who has faced this problem? Do you consider this issue to be an important safety flaw that should be addressed by car makers? Is so, should the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration mandate safety measures -- or not? When purchasing your next vehicle, will you insist on a safety device that prevents such deadly outcomes? Or should drivers and/or carmakers simply be responsible enough to handle this themselves without government intervention?

As always, please include your first and last names and your town when and if you respond so that I may identify you properly if I quote you. And by all means, don't write anything that you would not want to see attributed to you in a family newspaper.

Thanks again for your help. It has become an essential part of this column over the years.

-John

Introducing the World's First Teen Driving Calendar!

This calendar was written and designed by a Defensive Driving Instructor to combat the #1 Killer of 15-20 year olds in the U.S., by teaching K-12 students about how to  avoid what causes 90% of crashes...Mental Error.

In addition, the calendar aims to alert Educators and Parents about the deadliest times of year (Prom
Season, Summer Vacation etc.) for our Teenage Drivers.

Please download and print each month and use it as a teaching tool.

PS: Studies have shown that kids start learning to drive as Toddlers, so it's never too early to start teaching them to 'Drive Mentally'.
