Moving (briskly even) beyond tired notions of PE |
School Administrator
The leadership of John Skretta, superintendent of Norris School District in Firth, Nebraska, has ensured that wellness, nutrition and phys ed are given due consideration in budget decisions about curriculum, professional development and facilities. (Even master schedules have been adjusted to include two 10-minute activity breaks where students stretch during an activity like vocabulary study.) The district's holistic approach to student health required, Skretta explains, that "we re-imagine how PE works within a school system." PE in schools: An afterthought, but just as important as math or science |
Medical Daily
All of us have a very real need for an education in health and fitness. Whether one is a brain surgeon, musician, or financial analyst, they have a body to take care of. Why is it then that physical education is treated like a second class part of a child's education? Do children have enough time to eat well at school? |
Today
When children had a school lunch period of less than 20 minutes, they consumed less of their entrees, vegetables and milk, and they were less likely to choose a fruit to go with their meal, Harvard researchers reported in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. While eating less might seem to be a positive at a time when many children are battling obesity, with the new school nutrition guidelines, school meals may be one of the healthier meals kids eat all day, says Dr. Cambria Garell, assistant medical director of the Fit for Healthy Weight clinic at Mattel Children's Hospital at the University of California, Los Angeles.
