Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, 10 am - 2 pm
George Street Playhouse is proud to host "Be Unstoppable: A Celebration of Healthy Kids in the Arts" as part of the New Brunswick Cultural Center's Hub City Sounds Festival on Saturday, September 19, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The free event will feature a performance by GSP's Educational Touring Theatre of Austin the Unstoppable, its original musical promoting health and wellness, on the Playhouse's Mainstage at 10:30 a.m.  The day includes interactive activities, a healthy lunch and a performance by American Repertory Ballet dancers.

The event also serves as the official "kick-off" of a partnership between The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey and George Street Playhouse for Austin the Unstoppable, the tale of an 11-year-old gamer and junk food junkie named Austin who - along with his family - must face the consequences of an unhealthy lifestyle when his mother is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.  The production explores the challenges the family must face when having to make healthy choices together.

The musical, with book and lyrics by Barry Wyner and music by Daniel Israel, was commissioned by George Street Playhouse through The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey as well as through the Victoria J. Mastrobuono New Work Development Program and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Research for the development of Austin the Unstoppable was provided by Shaping NJ.  The show features the talents of Alexa Adderley, Kirk Geritano, Alexa Johnson and James Ross.

Immediately following the performance, a discussion with the audience about topics and issues explored during the performance will take place in the Mainstage theatre.  A free lunch will follow in the Playhouse's Cabaret, with activity and information tables available to guests.

The event is capped off at 1 p.m. by American Repertory Ballet dancers who will present Grumpy Bird, a children's ballet based on the children's book by Jeremy Tankard that is choreographed by Matthew Keefe and set to music by Mozart, and Mary Barton'sOnce Upon a Summer's Day.
The performance will mark the fourth consecutive year that GSP's Educational Touring Theatre has participated in the Hub City Sounds Festival.  For further information on this and other GSP Touring Theatre performances, contact GSP's Education Department at (732) 846-2895, ext. 117, oeducation@georgestplayhouse.org. MORE

"The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake." -  First Lady Michelle Obama at the Let's Move! launch on February 9, 2010

Obesity by the numbers

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. MORE

Introducing the World's First Teen Driving Calendar!

September and October 2015
This calendar was written and designed by a Defensive Driving Instructor to combat the #1 Killer of 15-20 year olds in the U.S., by teaching K-12 students about how to  avoid what causes 90% of crashes...Mental Error.

In addition, the calendar aims to alert Educators and Parents about the deadliest times of year (Prom
Season, Summer Vacation etc.) for our Teenage Drivers.

Please download and print each month and use it as a teaching tool.

PS: Studies have shown that kids start learning to drive as Toddlers, so it's never too early to start teaching them to 'Drive Mentally'.

Materials, Manuals and Mandates
Maureen Nussman,
NJAHPERD, Driver Education Committee

MATERIALS
Have you received your materials?  Try calling your County Superintendents office and MVC.

It is unacceptable that we are receiving materials after school has started.  I brought this concern to MVC last year and apparently they are on the same schedule as last year. Many schools did received supplies during the third week of school.   Private schools have received their materials since it is shipped directly to the schools.

MANUALS
There is a new manual (RO615) I have heard nothing regarding a new test.  Another phone call?
Terry Skjold, from IHA, emailed:
Manuals are sent directly to "private" schools.I have received mine. I had a chance to go through and compare to last year's edition. Below are the changes that I found.
  • Page 24-25: New sections on Organ Donation, Next to Kin - Sara's Law, and Motor Voter.
  • Page 31:  More information on out-of-state & out-of-country applicants.
  • Page 33: Chart reflects new page numbers where the road test item information can be found.
  • Page 40:  New laws for child restraints
  • Page 80-81:  Expanded section on Aggressive Driving/Road Rage. FYI - New law states that Road Rage must be covered in Driver Ed. Class
  • I didn't look at the Motorcycle Manual in Chapter 10. I don't cover this chapter in class.
If you find any other changes please send them directly to me at mnussman@aol.com and I will share any additional changes with all of you.

MANDATES
I have included articles that support the new mandates and changes to the manuals.
Nikhil's Law requires the Motor Vehicle Commission inform teenage drivers or the dangers of distracted driving in the driver's manual and in the driver's license examination.

Drowsy Driving (Good discussion topic with your class)
