Comprehensive school physical activity: active kids do better!
NJ Council on Physical Fitness and Sports
There's nothing like summer when kids spend time biking, playing, swimming, hiking and enjoying physical activity and the great outdoors! As students return to school this month, it is critical they maintain their physical activity levels. Research studies show active kids do better academically, have better attendance, and exhibit better behavior. Schools are in an ideal position to provide a Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program (CSPAP) to ensure children are receiving the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day necessary for a healthy active life! The billion mile race...is your school in?
New Balance
DO STUDENTS AT YOUR SCHOOL WALK OR RUN?COUNT THOSE MILES IN THE BILLION MILE RACE.

Perhaps your students walk and run throughout the year as part of a regular program. Those miles belong in the Race. Does your school participate in a walk-a-thon or 5K? Tally them up and put them in. What about walk-to-school? Those count too. You get the picture. Not running but want to get started? You've landed in the right place. We've got you covered.

We know that thousands of schools have experienced the benefits of adding walking and running to the school day. Active kids simply do better - better in the classroom, better attendance, better health and fitness. We want thousands of more schools to experience the same. That's why we are uniting the efforts of schools across the nation to walk and run one billion miles. Yep, that's right, billion with a 'b'. MORE
#Commit2Ten
Alliance for a Healthier Generation
It's time to prove that a little more physical activity makes a big difference. So we're challenging the nation to commit to an additional 10 minutes of physical activity every day. Today only one in three children is physically active each day. And for adults, 80 percent of us are physically inactive. Those are not the statistics that set the stage for a healthier generation. So, with your help, we're trying to change that.

To spread the word about the lack of physical activity across the country, we're launching #Commit2Ten, our largest campaign to date to challenge the nation to add 10 more minutes of physical activity a day.

#TCHT: Teachers Changing Habits Together
edutopia
Today's post should be different from the previous posts as I feel that I've found gold. It certainly is gold to me! As you may have sensed from my other posts, I am trying to transform my teaching, develop innovative approaches, and integrate technology in a meaningful way. Even more so, I want to make a difference - the one that will result in student engagement in every classroom and with every subject they are exposed to. The one that will make every minute students spend in class memorable and valuable. The way I see it, it's not the case, yet. So, in this post, I'd like to look at teaching and learning from a different perspective: a perspective of  habit. MORE
Help students make the grade this school year through more physical activity
Department of Health and Human Services
Daily physical activity is vital for building healthy bodies and better brain power. But in the midst of the hustle and bustle of a new school year, how can parents help ensure that physical activity remains a priority for their child? In this week's Be Active Your Way: Promoting Physical Activity blog, Betty Ann Fish introduces families to a Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program. Encouraging physical activity throughout the school day is the goal of a CSPAP. Many schools use a CSPAP - an approach supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and SHAPE America - Society of Health and Physical Educators. The school-wide model offers students opportunities to be physically active before, during and after school, in order to meet the nationally recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day. MORE

Go4Life...a campaign to help those ages 50 and up get physically active

The percentage of the students who said they experienced cyberbullying jumped from 14.6 percent to 21.2 percent over a six-year period ending in 2012, according to the study by the nonprofit Education Development Center. The study used self-reported health survey data from 17 unidentified schools west of Boston. MORE
Liquid Nicotine From E-Cigs Poses Poison Danger to Kids

The increasing popularity of electronic cigarettes has led to a number of cases of nicotine poisoning in recent years, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration hopes to require warning labels and child-resistant packaging on liquid nicotine products, such as those used in e-cigarettes. Even a small amount of liquid nicotine can be lethal, Jonathan Foulds, a professor of public health sciences at Penn State College of Medicine, said in a university news release. MORE
Take a Bite out of Nutrition
Office of Adolescent Health
Adolescence is a time of rapid change and development. Setting the foundations for healthy nutrition habits will help adolescents grow into strong, healthy adults. Encourage good nutrition with these resources:
  • While type 2 diabetes is generally thought of as an adult disease, the CDC reports that more than 5,000 new cases are diagnosed among youth under the age of 20 each year.
  • Inspire adolescents to eat well with these healthy recipes from their peers who won the White House Kids' "State Dinner" competition.
  • Show adolescents that healthy food doesn't have to be boring with these playful snack ideas that encourage fruit and vegetable consumption.
Prevent Risky Sexual Behavior
Office of Adolescent Health
In 2013, about half (47 percent) of high school students reported they had sex at least once in their life. Becoming pregnant as a teen or getting HIV or another sexually transmitted disease can pose serious threats to adolescents' well-being and future. Check out these resources and strategies to stay informed:
  • See how the sexual risk behaviors and reproductive health of teens in your state compare to the rest of the country with OAH's newly updated state data sheets.
  • Dating violence is linked with some risky sexual behavior. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a new online training for those working with youth to identify and prevent teen dating violence.
  • The White House released the National HIV/AIDS Strategy: Updated to 2020. The 2020 update adds youth, particularly young black gay and bisexual men, to the list of vulnerable populations in need of special prevention efforts and stresses additional priorities including, for example, reducing new cases and increasing access to care and improving health outcomes for persons living with HIV.
  • Teen pregnancy prevention (TPP) programs are effective-however, much work remains to understand how to scale these programs and use them to serve increasingly diverse populations. Get a bird's eye view of how the National Evidence-Based TPP Program is furthering progress with this FAQ video series.
'It's No Longer Dark': Suicide Attempt Survivors Share Messages Of Hope
WBUR
Mary Esther Rohman, of Belmont, knows what it means to hit rock bottom - or worse. As she describes it, the bottom fell out. "They wanted to lock me up in a state hospital and throw away the key as being incurable," Rohman recalls. She tried to kill herself many times starting in her late 30s. But thanks to the right depression treatment, self-motivation and a sweet twist of fate, at the age of 67, Rohman is in a very different place. MORE

RESEARCH

Study links cardiorespiratory fitness, thinner gray matter and better math skills in kids
University of Illinois via Bioscience Technology
A new study reveals that 9- and 10-year-old children who are aerobically fit tend to have significantly thinner gray matter than their "lower-fit" peers. Thinning of the outermost layer of brain cells in the cerebrum is associated with better mathematics performance, researchers report in the journal PLOS ONE. MORE

What's your 2015-2016 professional development plan? Nearly 30% of school districts fail to provide physical educators with professional development that addresses administration or use of fitness assessments or assessing and evaluating student performance in physical education.   We can change that.

Now is the time to line-up your 2015-2016 professional development.  There are options to suit your budget, timing and location.

"The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake." -  First Lady Michelle Obama at the Let's Move! launch on February 9, 2010

Obesity by the numbers

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. MORE
