Elevate Health
In this issue...
In this issue the authors look at the challenges facing parents, physicians, trainers, and coaches as more young athletes take to the playing field. Many of the sports prevention efforts are hampered by a lack of detailed knowledge surrounding the rates and patterns of injuries in youth sports; however, the authors provide detailed prevention strategies designed to keep young athletes safe and healthy so they can play more and spend less time sidelined with injury.
Opening commentary is provided by Caitlin Cahow, a member of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition. Caitlyn was also a member of the United States Women's National Ice Hockey Team from 2005 to 2013. The Team won a silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada and a bronze medal at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino, Italy. She received a B.A. from Harvard University and a J.D. from Boston College Law School. We hope you enjoy this issue of Elevate Health. |

Electronic 'addiction' is hijacking sports and our kids |
PHIT America
Smart phones and electronics are dominating the lives of children, who are playing video games and thinking that they are actually exercising. And now, video gaming is being described as a 'sport' by many children and businesses. In a recent article in the San Francisco Chronicle and other San Francisco Bay area newspapers, an organization is now calling its video gaming league the 'Little League of Video Games.' And, Brett Morris, COO of Super League Gaming, is also calling this activity a sport.
"We looked out our windows and saw the kid across the street going to soccer practice, and we said, 'Here's gaming, which is the sport of our children. We would love for them to have a similar communal environment where they could actually participate,'" said Morris, in the San Francisco Chronicle story. MORE

This Soccer Move Is Causing Concussions in Kids |

Health researchers and soccer moms have known for years that more concussions occur in high school soccer than in any other sport except for football. Now, a new study(link is external) in the journal JAMA Pediatricsdetails exactly how soccer players are getting those head injuries. Player-to-player contact caused the majority of concussions. But headers, which require players to redirect the ball with their head, were the most dangerous individual move, responsible for nearly a third of concussions for boys and more than a quarter for girls. It's not obesity we should worry about, it's inactivity |
Forbes
More people worldwide die from being overweight than through being underweight. But it is not obesity that should be a biggest concern, it is the lack of physical activity, and it is schools that are on the frontline. Increasing urbanization, desk-bound jobs and a sedentary lifestyle all mean we are getting much less exercise than we used to, despite our gym memberships. And the problem starts in childhood. MORE

Happy belated birthday...turning 10! |
Alliance for a Healthier Generation
On June 30th, Alliance for a Healthier Generation elebrated 10 years of creating a healthier nation for our children. And today we celebrate you - the changemakers who have helped redefine health for millions of kids.
Alot can change in 10 years. Students graduate, families expand, passions are found and children grow. Ten years ago, children weren't growing as healthily as they could be. The environments in which they grew up weren't as healthy as they could be. And the systems that determined the food they ate and time they moved weren't supporting health as well as they could be.
That's why 10 years ago, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation was founded by the American Heart Association and Clinton Foundation in response to the rapid increase in childhood obesity rates of the previous three decades.
While work still needs to be done, with your help over these past 10 years, they've taken major strides toward creating a healthier generation. MORE

Learn The Facts
"The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake." - First Lady Michelle Obama at the Let's Move! launch on February 9, 2010
Obesity by the numbers
Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. MORE

Introducing the World's First Teen Driving Calendar! |
June 2015
This calendar was written and designed by a Defensive Driving Instructor to combat the #1 Killer of 15-20 year olds in the U.S., by teaching K-12 students about how to avoid what causes 90% of crashes...Mental Error.
In addition, the calendar aims to alert Educators and Parents about the deadliest times of year (Prom Season, Summer Vacation etc.) for our Teenage Drivers. Please download and print each month and use it as a teaching tool.
PS: Studies have shown that kids start learning to drive as Toddlers, so it's never too early to start teaching them to 'Drive Mentally'. July calendar August calendar |
