National Smile Power Day - June 15th

Feel the power. Give everyone you see a big, friendly, "I like you" smile. You never know, you're warm smile just might turn someone's day right around...for the good!

Love may make the world go round. But, a smile makes the world a happy place. A smile is a powerful thing. Best of all, it's contagious. However, we do note that in order to be effective, a smile must be sincere. People can see right through phony or forced smiles.

Spend the whole day with a big, bright smile on your face. Flash a toothy smile to everyone you encounter.

A smile is so powerful, that it can:

  • Add years to your life
  • Make you a happier person
  • Make someone else a happier person
  • It's a mood change for the giver and the receiver
  • Improves relationships
  • In business, it sends a great customer service message

Did you know?

It's easier to smile than to frown. A smile uses fewer muscles.

Swim a Lap Day is good for your health. And, it's a fun day, too!

Summer has arrived. It's time to enjoy all that summer has to offer, including plenty of time in and around the pool. What better way to enjoy the early days of summer, than by taking a lap or two (or three) around the pool. In addition to the fun, it's great exercise to help keep you fit.

It's likely to be sunny and hot today. Find a few friends and swim a couple laps in the pool.

Screening young athletes for heart disease
The NCAA is moving forward with developing guidelines to detect college athletes at risk for sudden cardiac death - an issue that recently riled university team physicians and is seeping into state legislatures, where lawmakers are pushing for mandated heart screenings for high school athletes.

But what will be missing from the NCAA guidelines - expected in 2016 - is a recommendation to automatically screen all college athletes with an electrocardiogram, a test that measures the heart's electrical activity to check for a number of heart problems. Testing entire teams would pose a logistical and financial challenge for some universities. In addition, ECGs do not find every significant heart problem and can sometimes look abnormal in people with normal hearts. MORE
Rethink Your Child's Sugary Drink
From juice and fruit punch to flavored milk and soda, your child's favorite sugary drink can lead to a multitude of not-so-sweet health problems including tooth decay, obesity, diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

A recent study from researchers at the University of California-Davis gave more evidence toward this. After participants consumed varying prescribed levels of sweetened drinks over a two-week period, markers of cardiovascular disease worsened from baseline. If this is what happens after a two-week period, imagine what happens with years of consumption! MORE
How Junk Food Commercials Seduce The Brain And Aggravate Obesity
Advertising is a big factor not just in what we buy, but in the experience of food itself. When we bite into a burger, the whole of our life experience is brought to bear on the flavor - including ubiquitous ads. People like the taste of Coke not just because of its formula, but because the Coke brand is imbued with a lifetime of positive commercial messages. Just ask Don Draper. And these messages never stop: welcome back, Hamburglar and Colonel Sanders. This can have insidious effects on eating behavior. A study done at Dartmouth and published this month in the journal Cerebral Cortex, found that obese teens are especially vulnerable to this kind of brand seduction. MORE

New Online Fundraising Tool

Raising money online for  the American Heart Association (AHA) through a Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) or Hoops For Heart (HFH) event has never been easier. With the second year of our new online system under our belts, we have seen a tremendous increase in the number of students and donors fundraising online. We have also seen many PE teachers, once unsure about raising money online, come full circle and actually get excited about the impact it has had on their events!
