New Jersey school embraces #GimmeFive effort |
Courier-Post
They danced, then they danced some more. The entire student body - about 350 students - and staff at New Jersey's Hillside Elementary School shot video of a choreographed dance routine, taking part in first lady Michelle Obama's #GimmeFive Challenge, championed by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in March. The children were already dancing most days for exercise, so why not shoot a video and post it to DeGeneres' website, thought Hillside physical education teacher Donna Ingham when she saw the show. PE takes a hit: Schools' emphasis on testing is making kids sick |
Truthout
Since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2001, 44 percent of school administrators admit that they've cut physical education or recess to focus on test prep. "We have a national consensus about what PE should look like," said Carly Braxton, senior manager of advocacy at SHAPE America. "At the same time, states and districts are all over the board." MORE

Common Core side effect: New PE teachers allow for collaboration time |
EdSource
Of all the changes triggered by the Common Core State Standards, perhaps none is more surprising than an uptick in jobs for elementary school physical education teachers in California. Back from near extinction, physical education specialists are being hired by a smattering of districts to take over PE duties from elementary classroom teachers, who after years of teaching physical education themselves are now being freed up for Common Core lesson planning. Feeling unsafe at school, poverty tied to childhood obesity |
University of Montreal via PsychCentral
Feeling unsafe at school and growing up in poverty are both linked to a greater risk for childhood obesity, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Montreal and its affiliated Research Center at CHU Sainte Justine children's hospital. "Surprisingly, we have found that although victimization at school is linked to childhood obesity and more screen-time, screen-time itself was not correlated with obesity. This suggests a key role for feeling unsafe and victimization in perpetuating obesity," said senior author Dr. Tracie Barnett. MORE

Obesity by the numbers
Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. MORE
