A message from the NJAHPERD JRFH/HFH Coordinator...

Did you EVER think we would see MAY?? Wow, spring and the change of weather is surely welcomed! Keep reading for ideas to include in your teaching this month.

I hope that the information below can provide you with something new to present to your students and staff. Remember to register your Jump Rope or Hoops for Heart events for the 2015-16 school year! Thanks to ALL of you,

the coordinators, and your students and staff for another very successful year in serving the American Heart Association.

My Best,

Christine Baccarella

NJAHPERD, JR/HFH Coordinator

May is American stroke month

The American Heart Association has many TERRIFIC resources for us to use. As you know from the educational DVD's in our JR/HFH kits, heart disease and stroke are not limited to the "aging." Perusing the links you will find survivor stories from all ages, but also those from the youngest victims. This is information most school-aged students don't often hear. Please click here to obtain educational materials to present to your students. Think about your students being able to recognize the symptoms of stroke and being able to take action to help.

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month
For more information visit the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Take the time to showcase new and exciting ways for your students and their families to get out and get moving. Review those types of physical activity that are aerobic and heart-healthy! Remind them that their jump ropes can now be "taken to the streets!" Get those LONG ropes turning on the playground during recess and in your school's "before and aftercare" sessions.
May is National High Blood Pressure Education Month

For more information visit the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Health Information Center Do your students understand what blood pressure is and how it affects one's health? Take the time to address some things they should know about high blood pressure and its long-term effect on body systems.

World NO Tobacco Day - May 31st

World No Tobacco Day

brings awareness of the health issues and dependency issues related to any tobacco use. World No Tobacco Day stresses the importance of making people all over the world aware of the health dangers of using tobacco. It also stresses the addictive nature of tobacco use. Ask your students to name the different ways tobacco can be used and what its effects are on your circulatory system. MORE

New Online Fundraising Tool

Raising money online for  the American Heart Association (AHA) through a Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) or Hoops For Heart (HFH) event has never been easier. With the second year of our new online system under our belts, we have seen a tremendous increase in the number of students and donors fundraising online. We have also seen many PE teachers, once unsure about raising money online, come full circle and actually get excited about the impact it has had on their events!
