Physical Education & Sport Week Celebrations |
What a great week for PE!
TRENTON- Past President, JoAnn Doherty, accepted a resolution for PE & Sport month from the State Board of Education on May 6th, as thousands of NJ students participated in Project ACES. She led the Board members in a physical activity and spoke briefly about the value of physical education. JoAnn also gave oral testimony on Thursday in support of the Recess Bill for the Senate Education Committee. Also providing support testimony was NJEA, NJ Principals & Supervisors Association, AHA and Assemblywoman Shirley Turner, the bill's sponsor.. We also had written support from the NJPTA, NJ Pediatrics Association, NJ YMCA and SHAPE America. The bill passed unanimously!
Many of our members held special events to celebrate and advocate for PE and PA. Here are some examples...
CALDWELL-Grover Cleveland Middle School hosted a "Move in May" Physical Activity Team Challenge with students and staff. Teams of four (team names centered around fitness, physical activity or sports) competed to earn the most points in a variety of ways such as participating in the morning J.A.M.s (just a minute of exercise), attending walking club in the mornings, etc. They can earn extra points by using the #GCMSmoveinmay. Also- teachers get extra 5 points of including kinesthetic learning activities in their classrooms and more! 10 teacher teams and over 40 student teams participating!
Kate McAuliffe
FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP-Thursday was a historical night! Never before has Franklin Township had all elementary Health & Physical Education staff members come together to create an event collaboratively for the sole purpose of showcasing what we do for our parents, students and community members. We had obstacle courses, cooperative games, Gaga and Just Dance! Our staff members reviewed our K-4 curriculum, Health & Physical Education standards, medicals, the letter day, proper sneakers for PE and our parents completed a survey that will aide in the growth of our department. Last, but not least our parents were able to see the magnificent New Jersey Teen Prevention Education Program (Teen Pep)
A special thank you to our presenters and program coordinators, volunteers, administrators and local businesses for a successful evening! Also thanks to NJAHPERD for providing backpacks for all of the children!

MOUNT LAUREL - They danced, then they danced some more.
The entire student body - about 350 students - and staff at Hillside Elementary School shot video of a choreographed dance routine on Friday, taking part in first lady Michelle Obama's #GimmeFive Challenge, championed by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in March.
DeGeneres and Obama danced to the hit song "Uptown Funk" on the show; Hillside students and staffers chose the same song and hope to be recognized by DeGeneres' show for their fitness effort. Read more
TOMS RIVER- South Toms River Elementary School participated in "Brain Energizers" 3X a day to get students moving more!
Jason Duimstra
Congratulations to everyone who did something special during the week to spotlight their program!
Keep the success stories coming. We still have until the end of the month!

The bicycles are part of a lease purchase program the Sea Isle City Board of Education has with Tuckahoe Bike Shop, Dan Tumolo, president of the Sea Isle City Board of Education, said, and have been loaned to the high school physical education program for its use. Does Summertime Weight Gain Undermine Youth Obesity Prevention Efforts? |
Active Living Research
New research brief synthesizes what is known about summer weight gain, and how physical activity and diet during the summer may contribute.
For many children, summer vacation is a three-month hiatus from the daily responsibilities and scheduled demands they experience during the nine-month school year. Yet the freedoms many adults may remember from their childhood summers - riding bikes to the corner store, walking to the local swimming hole, playing active games with neighborhood friends every day - have become less common among today's youth. As policy-makers, practitioners, and researchers continue to work toward reversing the childhood obesity epidemic and ensuring our children grow up at a healthy weight, learning more about what occurs during summer vacation may be critical for informing their efforts. The research brief shows that:
- During summer vacation, children gain up to three times as much weight as during the entire school year.
- Children lose fitness improvements they had gained during the school year by the time they returned from summer vacation.
- Poor dietary habits in summer camps negatively impact children.
- Summer program leaders recognize health as important.
Healthy eating and physical activity standards for day-long summer programs should be implemented by the settings many youth frequent during the summer.

How breakfast can impact our future |
President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition
Mark Hertling, retired Lieutenant General and member of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, discusses in a recent blog post the importance of providing youth with proper nutrition at the beginning of each day. We know that proper nutrition is the key to keeping our kids energetic throughout the day, which leads to an increased ability to learn, yet many of us are sending our kids to school without breakfast. "Educators say 75 percent of kids are regularly showing up hungry at our schools' doors each day, leaving them at a disadvantage to learn and achieve. Research indicates that improved nutrition, including daily breakfast, and increased physical activity can lead to improved academic performance." Read Hertling's entire blog post to learn the importance of providing our kids with the proper fuel for a successful day.

The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. PS: Studies have shown that kids start learning to drive as Toddlers, so it's never too early to start teaching them to 'Drive Mentally.'
