Local Fuel Up to Play 60 Students Attend White House |
Fuel Up to Play 60
Two New Jersey students serving as state and national ambassadors for Fuel Up to Play 60 attended the annual Easter Egg Roll at the White House. Jake and Anisha were the only Fuel Up to Play 60 ambassadors selected to play "roving reporter" and had the chance to talk to participants about how proper nutrition helps them to succeed every day,
Through Fuel Up to Play 60 we are making positive life-long changes in the lives of our students." According to Kristina Deecher, American Dairy Association's Child Nutrition Relationship Coordinator, "Having this kind of an experience at the White House is something a relatively small number of people ever get the chance to do. Jake and Anisha will always remember this day. Let's continue to bring these experiences for a positive impact in the lives of our students through the Fuel Up to Play 60 program."

PE debate: Grade on what students know or what they can do? |
The Florida Times-Union
Physical education classes nationwide are switching focus toward fitness knowledge and encouraging healthy lifestyles and away from fitness competition and tests of endurance. In short, fewer teachers are forcing children to climb ropes or toss heavy medicine balls, and many no longer pit one student or group of students against another for a grade. "People see the physical education teachers as the ...guy who tortures them to see how many pushups they can do in a minute," said Cheryl L. Richardson, senior director of programs for SHAPE America. Art, music, physical education: All are important in our schools |
Writes Dr. Chuck Corbin of Arizona State, a member of the SHAPE America Hall of Fame: "Over the last few months, much has been written about funding for Arizona education. The 17 percent decrease in funding in recent years and diversion of funds designated for education have prompted a variety of comments. Rarely mentioned, however, is the fact that art, music, and physical education programs have been dramatically cut as funding has decreased. Improving test scores in math and language arts seems to be the primary goal and 'special' programs such as art, music, and physical education are the first to go when budget shortfalls occur." MORE

Why we need to bring physical activity back into our schools |
The Globe and Mail
For some time, educational leaders have been emphasizing the importance of physical activity in schools. The premise is that if children are active, they will develop good habits, feel better, be healthier and grow into adults who make exercise a priority. This is an important goal, but it is only part of the story. MORE

How breakfast can impact our future |
The Huffington Post
It's our responsibility as parents, grandparents, teachers and community leaders to set our youth up for success. While there are many ways to do this, one of the easiest - and yet most often overlooked - is providing a nourishing meal at the start of the day. Educators say 75 percent of kids are regularly showing up hungry at our schools' doors each day, leaving them at a disadvantage to learn and achieve. MORE

Could a dose of nature be just what the doctor ordered? |
American Institute of Biological Sciences via ScienceDaily
Numerous studies over the past 30 years have linked exposure to nature with improved human health and well-being. These findings are of growing importance: In the near future, 70 percent of the world's population will live in cities, where they will face a rising tide of lifestyle-related disease. Still, little is known about the mechanisms underlying the nature-health connection, and confusion awaits those who would transform existing findings into action. MORE

"The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake." - First Lady Michelle Obama at the Let's Move! launch on February 9, 2010
Obesity by the numbers
Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. MORE
