Volunteer Coaches Needed
Special Olympics NJ

Special Olympics New Jersey is looking for volunteers to coach the Young Athletes program and a Strider Balance Bike Program at the Gloucester County YMCA.

Strider Balance Bikes are pedal-less bikes that promote development in balance and core strength. Used instead of bicycles with training wheels, it is the hope that athletes will be able to transition to a 2 wheel pedal bike with more ease and confidence. Athletes ages 2 through 21 can participate but are generally grouped as follows:

  • 2 - 4
  • 5 - 7
  • 8 - 12
  • 13 - 16
  • 16 +

Coaches would be asked to coach one to two age groups.

The Young Athletes program is a sports play program for athletes ages 2 - 7. Based on a progression developmentally appropriate gross motor skills, Young Athletes also provides opportunities for improvement in social and cognitive skills and speech and language development.

  • Sessions usually run 6 - 8 weeks, approximately 3 times per year
  • Session times usually run 30 - 45 minutes dependent upon the age range and activities presented
  • Days and times may be flexible. Currently Monday and Thursday evenings 5 - 5:45 pm seem to be the time frame we are working with but we may be able to look at alternates.
  • Materials and training are provided.
  • Coaching responsibilities can be shared among 2 or 3 people

Responsibilities:

Young Athletes Coach:

  • Plan and execute Young Athletes group activities for each session date
  • Maintain communication with parents of registered young athletes
  • Manage volunteers to assist each week
  • Set up and break down equipment

Strider Balance Bike Coach:

  • Plan and execute Strider Balance Bike activities for each session date
  • Maintain communication with parents of registered athletes
  • Manage volunteers to assist each week

Joe McCarthy testifies at Capitol for Minnesota to strive toward national benchmarks
Sun This Week
Joe McCarthy doesn't like it when his elementary students sit still.

The 14-year physical education teacher has been a leader in state and nationally-based physical education movements designed to help reinforce the notion that exercise in school is more than simply giving students a chance to "shake all their sillies out."

Physical activity throughout the school day is instrumental to a student's cognitive learning process, McCarthy told the House Education Innovation Policy Committee last Thursday.

He testified in support of House File 498, which would put Minnesota's primary and secondary schools more in line with national physical education standards.

"The brain stores no fuel itself," said McCarthy, who teaches at Meadowview Elementary in Farmington. "So if you want your kid's brain to be turned on, focused, ready to learn, you need to send nutrients to their brain. The best way to do that is through physical activity and physical education." Why kids are getting more aggressive on the playground
The Washington Post
Tag...a simple game of tag. Seems innocent enough. But is it? Not according to many teachers.

Kids are starting to hit with such force that they often end up whacking their opponent across the back in a monstrous slap. I've seen this myself many times. "Ouch!" one kid cries, now on their hands and knees and fighting off tears. "Don't hit so hard!" they yell up at the child standing over them. Often, you hear the other child whine, "I didn't mean too..." Many times the act seems unintentional, although painful for the victim nonetheless. Tag is now becoming such an issue that schools are starting to ban this once beloved game. MORE

And as we mark this fifth anniversary, we're celebrating how far we've come, we're challenging ourselves to do even more, and we're committing to be true champions for this issue in the years ahead. That's our theme for this anniversary year: Celebrate, challenge, champion."  MORE

How young is too young to run?
U.S. News & World Report
While there's no question that physical activity in youth is critical for physical and mental health, as well as for developing lifelong healthy habits, how exercise is presented and pursued matters, says Skye Donovan, a physical therapist and associate professor of physical therapy at Marymount University, who researches childhood obesity. On one end of the spectrum, she says, there are overweight and obese kids who never find sports they like, which raises their risk for obesity as adults. On the other end, there are kids whose parents pressure them into a sport, leading to burnout. MORE
California school board picks cork for athletic fields

With the vote, the schools may become the first in the nation to use cork as infill on fields where high school football is played, according to Jennie Bruneman, director of maintenance and operations for the West Sonoma Union High School District. Obesity by the numbers

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. MORE

Approximately 50 million students are currently enrolled in America's elementary and secondary schools (grades pre-K to 12).

SHAPE America wants to ensure that by the time today's preschoolers graduate from high school in 2029, all of America's students are benefitting from the skills, knowledge, confidence, desire and opportunities to enjoy healthy, meaningful physical activity. MORE

Happy Birthday, NJ Seatbelt Law!
Please wish a very happy birthday to the NJ seatbelt law!  Do you remember when people would not buckle up? March 1, 2015 marked the 30th anniversary of the law that mandated the wearing of seatbelts for drivers and passengers in NJ.

Here is a Lesson Plan Idea to introduce the seatbelt law (and finding ways to engage your students to use their seatbelts).

Here is an excellent article to discuss: seatbelts, primary and secondary enforcement, and safety features in new cars (anyone remember the Corvair? I took my road test in one!)
The GDL decal program celebrates 5 years this May!
Educating the community regarding teen safe driving and the GDL laws is a challenge.  Decreasing teen fatalities and crashes in our state, is a reward for all our efforts. It has been 5 years since the red decal was added to the GDL and crashes continue to decrease. MORE

As a thank you and to continue to increase awareness of the decal, a positive interactive program from the Essex County Community Safety Program was developed.

The GDL Decal Thank You Program can be found on the new Coalition website

You can go to the site for the "how-to" flyer which explains the program, the fill-in-the-blanks press release and the GDL Impact Fact Sheet.
Introducing the World's First Teen Driving Calendar!
April 2015
This calendar was written and designed by a Defensive Driving Instructor to combat the #1 Killer of 15-20 year olds in the U.S., by teaching K-12 students about how to  avoid what causes 90% of crashes...Mental Error.

In addition, the calendar aims to alert Educators and Parents about the deadliest times of year (Prom
Season, Summer Vacation etc.) for our Teenage Drivers.

Please download and print each month and use it as a teaching tool.

PS: Studies have shown that kids start learning to drive as Toddlers, so it's never too early to start teaching them to 'Drive Mentally.'
