A message from the NJAHPERD JRFH/HFH Coordinator...

Well, here's hoping almost ALL of YOU have completed your American Heart events by now! If not, NJAHPERD wishes you the BEST when you do!
April 1st was NATIONAL WALKING DAY, but why not continue the SPIRIT of WALKING everyday? As the American Heart Association has branded this year... "LIFE IS WHY!"
Below please find links that will give you information on the simple ACT OF WALKING and how it impacts physical well being. Have you tried a "WALKING CLUB" at your school? Do you incorporate organized walking into your recess programs?
My Best,
Christine Baccarella

May is American stroke month
The American Heart Association has many TERRIFIC resources for us to use. As you know from the educational DVD's in our JR/HFH kits, heart disease and stroke are not limited to the "aging." Perusing the links you will find survivor stories from all ages, but also those from the youngest victims. This is information most school-aged students don't often hear. Please click here to obtain educational materials to present to your students. Think about your students being able to recognize the symptoms of stroke and being able to take action to help.

"Sneaky salt" in your diet
Salt is sneaking into our diet -- and too much salt is not good for our health. Even if you don't use the salt shaker, you're probably getting too much sodium. More than 75 percent of the sodium we eat is added to processed, prepackaged, and restaurant foods before we buy them. MORE

When assistant principal collapsed, CPR instructor stepped up
For more than 20 years, Lisa Smith has taught CPR to students and colleagues in Denver, providing training as many as 30 times a year.
The question she often heard was whether she'd ever performed CPR in an emergency.
No, she would say, adding, "I hope I could just jump in if a situation arose, especially since it's usually someone you know."
That's exactly what happened on Nov. 20, 2014, in the weight room of Denver East High School. MORE

American Medical Schools Aren't Teaching the Importance of Exercise
"I was surprised that medical schools didn't spend more time on it"
Many doctors are finishing medical school without getting any training in the importance of exercise, a new study shows.
Researchers at Oregon State University found that less than half of physicians trained in the U.S. in 2013 had received any instruction on exercise, based on curriculum records listed online. MORE

Parents 'rarely spot child obesity'
Parents hardly ever spot obesity in their children, resulting in damaging consequences for health, doctors warn.
In a study of 2,976 families in the UK, only four parents thought their child was very overweight. Medical assessments put the figure at 369. The researchers, writing in the British Journal of General Practice, said obesity had become the new normal in society.
Experts said the study showed the "enormity" of the obesity epidemic. Around one in five children in Year 6 is obese and a further 14% are overweight, the National Child Measurement Programme shows. MORE
