Special Olympics NJ
Special Olympics New Jersey is looking for volunteers to coach the Young Athletes program and a Strider Balance Bike Program at the Gloucester County YMCA.
Strider Balance Bikes are pedal-less bikes that promote development in balance and core strength. - 8 - 12
- 13 - 16
- 16 +
Coaches would be asked to coach one to two age groups.
The Young Athletes program is a sports play program for athletes ages 2 - 7. Based on a progression developmentally appropriate gross motor skills, Young Athletes also provides opportunities for improvement in social and cognitive skills and speech and language development.
- Sessions usually run 6 - 8 weeks, approximately 3 times per year
- Session times usually run 30 - 45 minutes dependent upon the age range and activities presented
- Days and times may be flexible. Currently Monday and Thursday evenings 5 - 5:45 pm seem to be the time frame we are working with but we may be able to look at alternates.
- Materials and training are provided.
- Coaching responsibilities can be shared among 2 or 3 people
Responsibilities:
Young Athletes Coach:
- Plan and execute Young Athletes group activities for each session date
- Maintain communication with parents of registered young athletes
- Manage volunteers to assist each week
- Set up and break down equipment
Strider Balance Bike Coach:
- Plan and execute Strider Balance Bike activities for each session date

Learning To Move, Moving To Learn: The Benefits Of PE |
npr.org
When it comes to kids and exercise, schools need to step up and focus more on quality as well as quantity. And, says Dr. Gregory D. Myer, they need to promote activities that develop motor skills, socialization and fun.
Myer is one of the authors of a recent paper and commentary on children and exercise. He's also director of the Human Performance Lab and director of research at the Division of Sports Medicine at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
Like others, Myer notes that when it's time to trim the budget, PE, art and music classes are often the first to go. While he's certainly distressed by those cuts, he and his co-authors also seek to question the "current dogma that is currently focused on the quantitative rather than qualitative aspects of physical activity" programs for youth. The unintended consequences of gutting the physical education mandate |
Chicago Tribune
Writes PE teacher Courtney D. White: "Physical education has changed since I was in school in the late '80s. Then the focus was on sports and how fast can you run or how high can you jump. Obviously the athletic kids will succeed when they set the bar. Physical education now is all about fitness and wellness. Understanding how the body responds to exercise and applying those concepts to your personal fitness and wellness goals." MORE

Why is hydration important for athletes? |

We have all seen the ads with hard working athletes sweating fluorescent greens, reds, yellows and blues. Pretty cool visuals. Obesity by the numbers
Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. MORE

2015 National Distracted Driving Enforcement April 10-15, 2015 |
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
In recognition of April's National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, NHTSA has planned a number of activities. We are also kicking off its second national highly visible enforcement campaign for distracted driving: U Drive. U Text. U Pay., which is supported by English and Spanish language television, radio and digital advertising.
NHTSA has also developed a robust social media strategy designed to raise public awareness about the consequences of texting and driving. The focus is on the idea that "If you're texting, you're not driving." We anticipate that this message will engage the target audience of men and women 18-34 (slightly skewed toward women) with creative and persuasive messaging on NHTSA social media channels and their media partners.
Paid advertising will run April 6-15, 2015. Click here for the 2015 Media Work Plan.

PS: Studies have shown that kids start learning to drive as Toddlers, so it's never too early to start teaching them to 'Drive Mentally.'
