NJ Legislation Updates!
|
The Senate vote for the certification bill S-2245 (Barnes/Allen) has been rescheduled for Monday, March 16th.
PLEASE call/email your State Senator as soon as possible and encourage them to vote YES!
To find out the name of your State Senator and contact information, click HERE
Please call or email (calling is preferable) and let them know who you are and why you support this bill:
- This bill would require anyone teaching health education and/or physical education in grades K-6 to possess the appropriate instructional certificate in the subject and current teachers would be grandfathered;
- Bill A-3256/S-2245 will insure that New Jersey students are receiving effective instruction by a specialist in required health and physical education courses. Qualified health and physical education teachers base their teaching on state and national standards, establish high expectations for learning, view assessment as an integral component of teaching and learning, and demonstrate professionalism and ethical conduct. Therefore it is best to have certified health and physical education teachers teach these important subjects in New Jersey.
Please don't wait for someone else to call or email. Do it today! Our students deserve to be taught health education and physical education by certified health and physical education professionals.

Is football nearing a cultural crossroads as concussions grow? |
NBC News
Football, the game that sacked baseball as the national pastime, may not exist as we know it in 10 years - as evidence mounts that brain damage from big hits has infected the sport from the NFL all the way down to youth leagues, experts assert. The pipeline of future players is shrinking. High school football participation has dropped by nearly 2 percent since 2008-09. The number of Pop Warner players - who can start playing at age 5 - decreased by almost 10 percent between 2010 and 2012, ESPN has reported. MORE

Should athletes eat fat or carbs? |
The New York Times
For decades, recreational and competitive athletes have stoutly believed that we should - even must - consume a diet rich in carbohydrates to fuel exertion. The conventional wisdom has been to avoid fatty foods because they are an inefficient fuel source and could lead to weight gain. But in recent years, some scientists and quite a few athletes have begun to question those beliefs. MORE

National Nutrition Month Three Simple Changes to a Healthier Family |

National Nutrition Month was started back in 1973, as a way to help Americans of all ages focus their attention on nutrition. I think almost thirty years ago, the American Dietetics Association realized that with continued modernization and a busier lifestyle, we would need some reminders and eating healthy tips. With work, school, kids and home responsibilities, parents are really juggling a lot.
We all know that a healthy lifestyle is so important for all of us and especially children. The real question is how can we help you incorporate some simple changes that are doable, reasonable and can fit into your busy schedules.
Our goal this month is to help you focus on just three simple changes you can implement that can really make a difference. MORE

Active Education: Growing Evidence on Physical Activity and Academic Performance
|
activelivingresearch.org
One in three kids in the United States is overweight or obese. Obese youth have elevated risk for health problems like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, unhealthy blood cholesterol patterns, and other health risks related to cardiovascular disease.1 Obesity can also have serious ramifications for kids' cognitive development2 and affect school attendance.
Because children spend so much time at school, schools have a unique opportunity to help children become more healthy and active. The Institute of Medicine has called on school leaders to offer more opportunities for children to be physically active before, during and after the school day.5 Further, both childhood obesity and poor academic performance tend to be clustered in schools with a high percentage of lower-income, minority students, creating a student health issue that is especially problematic in those communities. Obesity by the numbers
Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. MORE

2015 National Distracted Driving Enforcement April 10-15, 2015 |
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
In recognition of April's National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, NHTSA has planned a number of activities. We are also kicking off its second national highly visible enforcement campaign for distracted driving: U Drive. U Text. U Pay., which is supported by English and Spanish language television, radio and digital advertising.
NHTSA has also developed a robust social media strategy designed to raise public awareness about the consequences of texting and driving. The focus is on the idea that "If you're texting, you're not driving." We anticipate that this message will engage the target audience of men and women 18-34 (slightly skewed toward women) with creative and persuasive messaging on NHTSA social media channels and their media partners.
Paid advertising will run April 6-15, 2015. Click here for the 2015 Media Work Plan.
