A message from the NJAHPERD JRFH/HFH Coordinator...
Where were you from February 22 - 24th? Well, I was NOT in KANSAS, but was among "the best of the best" in Long Branch, New Jersey! NJAHPERD, the State's GO TO organization for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, held its 96th Annual Convention. Over 1,000 conventioneers were treated to more than 145 programs and 2 keynote sessions. Four SHAPE National TOYs (Teachers of the Year) and more than 175 outstanding presenters were on hand to deliver professional development as part of NJAHPERD's ongoing commitment to its membership.
The American Heart Association sponsored two phenomenal jump rope demonstration teams as part of the Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart Program. Below, find links to pictures and a few video clips of students from the jump teams as well as a few our NJAHPERD members who were feeling "YOUNG AT HEART!" Also at Convention, Tracy Williams and Todd Lawrence from George J Mitchell Elementary along with their AHA Representative, Andrea Mrusek, did a session on how to energize your fundraising..having taken their school from $3,000 in their first event to over $22,000!

Ocean Township HS "Double Dutch for Life" team (coaches Ken Hoff and Jeff Soares) wowed the crowd with their skills and did a terrific job getting our members up and jumping.
| Jim Presbrey (AHA VP of marketing ) handing Lincoln Leopards the gift of a new jump rope |
The Lincoln Leopards from Hasbrouck Heights (coach Mike Cebula) showed off their polished skills.
Dr. Anne Farrell and her TCNJ students did a session "Double Dutch or Bust" that broke down the simplistic steps/cues for beginning skills. Another program by Tracy Williams, Todd Lawrence, and AHA rep Andrea Mrusek did a wonderful session on planning, executing, and following up on your AHA events.
Next year.... Will YOU be at THE CONVENTION BY THE OCEAN??? NJAHPERD- February 21-23, 2016 SEE YOU THERE!!!!
My Best,
Christine Baccarella
NJAHPERD, JR/HFH Coordinator

For years now scientific literature has associated watching the television with a sedentary lifestyle and obesity in young people. Now research led by the Universities of Zaragoza (Spain) and São Paulo (Brazil) reveal the relationship between this habit and a greater risk of developing high blood pressure. MORE

Starting with this fall's high school freshman class, public school students in New Jersey will be required to learn CPR and how to use defibrillators in order to graduate.
Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno - who is acting governor while Gov. More low-income children participate in school breakfasts
More low-income children across the country are participating in federally-funded school breakfasts, as districts create "Grab N Go" and other programs to serve children inside classrooms and not separately in cafeterias.
Still, nearly half the country's eligible low-income students are missing out on breakfast.
During the last school year, about 11.2 million low-income children ate a morning meal each day at school, an increase of 320,000 children from the previous year, according to the Food Research and Action Center, a nonprofit working on hunger and nutrition in the United States. MORE
