EXECUTIVE BOARD NEWS

A message from your president

Hello!  I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the president of  the

New Jersey Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.  My name is Carol Lynch and I am currently the Physical Education teacher at Fleetwood School in Mount Laurel, NJ.

I have been active for many years in both NJAHPERD and NASPE (SHAPE America) having served on national and state appointed committees, been a member of the executive board of NJAHPERD and presented at both the state and national levels.  I am very passionate about our profession and the benefits that it has for our students and their families.

No matter where you are in your career, you will benefit from being an active member of NJAHPERD.   Please join us as we advance in our respective fields with ongoing professional development in the current trends of Health and Physical Education and advocating for our students and profession at the state and national level.

It is an honor to serve as the president of NJAHPERD.  Our executive board and director continue to work tirelessly to provide you with opportunities for Promoting Healthy, Active Lifestyles! We are available when you need us and encourage your involvement in our organization.

To Health and Happiness,

Carol Lynch

President, NJAHPERD

A message from your past-president
Joanne Doherty

Happy Spring, Happy Ides of March and St. Patrick's Day to each and every one of you!

A BIG thank you to all who attended NJAHPERD's 96th Annual Convention and helped us in breaking all of last year's records in attendance, convention sessions, and the amount of excellent vendors we had present. Thank you to the 2014-2015 Executive Board for their dedication and time given to help everything run as smoothly as possible, to all our members who volunteered to assist us in a variety of ways during the convention, to Jackie Malaska our Convention Manager and her office staff for the planning, running and organization of the entire convention set-up, to our National, Eastern, and State Teachers of the Year and all our outstanding presenters who motivated, stimulated and gave passion to our attendees to bring back new ideas and activities to their quality health, physical education and dance programs that will surely benefit their students, to our Keynotes Gian Paul Gonzalez's "ALL IN" presentation which was not just a slogan, but A Way of Life and Sandra K. Sims "Finding Joy in the Journey" in our everyday journey of life, to Susan Toth, our Awards Chair, and her committee for a fabulous and entertaining Awards Banquet, to all our outstanding and distinguished 2015 Award Recipients, and to all our sponsors and exhibitors for attending and caring about our members' needs and those of your students and for their individual contributions to the Grande Finale Raffle which this year was over the top.

I once again was overwhelmed by the positive vibrations of professionalism, networking and excitement going on all three days which was contagious, enthusiastic and heartwarming. I could see and hear "Advocacy Moving Forward" as I went around the convention and I knew learning was taking place for the benefit of all our students.

As your Past President, I intend to keep "Advocacy Moving Forward" with your help here in New Jersey so the whole child is insured a quality Physical Education and Health Education program as a Core Academic Subject.

I wish Carol Lynch, our new NJAHPERD President, and the 2015-2016 Executive Board a very rewarding year ahead.

My sincere thanks to all of you for allowing me to work with you and for you these past two years.

Sincerely yours,

JoAnn Doherty

Let's get every kid in a park!
USDOE
From sea to shining sea, our country is home to gorgeous landscapes, vibrant waterways, and historic treasures that all Americans can enjoy.

But with young people spending more time in front of screens than outside, they're missing out on valuable opportunities to explore, learn, and play in the spectacular outdoor places that belong to all of them.

President Obama is committed to giving every kid the chance to explore America's great outdoors and unique history. That's why today he launched the Every Kid in a Park initiative, to help get all children to visit and enjoy the outdoors.

Starting in September, every fourth-grader in the nation will receive an "Every Kid in a Park" pass that's good for free admission to all of America's federal lands and waters - for them and their families - for a full year.

We also know that many children don't visit these places because they can't get there easily. So we'll also help schools and families arrange field trips and visits by providing key trip-planning tools and helping to cover transportation costs for schools with the greatest financial need.

Learn more about this exciting announcement, and make sure to share.

Common Core standards fail to keep child development in mind
The Huffington Post
There's nothing wrong with standards, or goals, per se. It makes sense to establish a certain level of mastery for children to achieve, and to determine what students should be able to do and know over the course of a particular period of time - a school year, for example. But the standards should be realistic. MORE

Fact or fallacy: Pickle juice as sports nutrition

It Really Might 'Get Better' for LGBT Teens
The Atlantic
In September 2010-spurred by a slew of media reports about LGBT young people committing suicide-sex columnist and gay-rights activist Dan Savage posted a YouTube video with his husband, Terry Miller, directly addressing LGBT teens struggling with bullying. "It gets better," the couple promised, pointing to their own lives as inspiration.

The mantra soon morphed into its own campaign. Five years later, the roughly 60,000 "It Gets Better" videos-including messages from Barack Obama, Project Runway host Tim Gunn, and Kermit the Frog-have generated an estimated 60 million YouTube views, and Savage has turned the It Gets Better Project into a non-profit organization to support LGBT youth. 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee releases its scientific report
Article Subheading
The 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee released its scientific report.  The purpose of the report, developed by a committee of independent experts, is to inform the federal government of current scientific evidence on topics related to diet, nutrition, and health.  The committee is to be commended for developing a solid report that builds upon the recommendations of previous Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committees and makes recommendations on a number of new topics.

The report will be available for written public comment until April 8, 2015.  A NANA subgroup will be developing a model comment for organizations to use as a template in submitting their own comments.  If you would like to be involved in developing the model comment but were unable to participate in the last subgroup meeting, please contact Laura MacCleery  at CSPI (LMacCleery@cspinet.org) or Melissa Maitin-Shepard at ACS CAN (Melissa.maitin-shepard@cancer.org).   The model comment should be available within the next 3-4 weeks, and we encourage all NANA members to submit comments on the report.

There will also be a public meeting on March 24, at which there will be an opportunity to provide brief oral comments.  Registration for the public meeting will open on or around March 9.  We encourage all NANA members to register for and provide comments at this meeting.  It is important for the nutrition and public health community to have a strong presence at this meeting, and slots will fill quickly, so we encourage everyone to sign up as soon as the registration becomes available.  Please be advised you may be required to provide a brief outline of your oral comments when requesting an opportunity to speak, but you will not be required to stick to the outline you have provided in your actual comments.

The next step will be for USDA and HHS to develop the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans policy report, which serves as the basis for all federal nutrition policies and programs, including the school nutrition programs, SNAP-Ed, WIC, and CACFP.  The agencies are to be guided by the advisory committee's report and public comments in developing the guidelines.

The full Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee report is available here.

We have model tweets and talking points available. If you would like a copy, please email me. Also, we will be organizing a tweetchat soon.  We will send the invite out to NANA and the Food Marketing Workgroup when we have set a date. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Study: Educated youth football coaches can cut injuries
The Associated Press via Fox Sports
A new study shows young football players are less likely to get hurt or sustain head injuries when playing for coaches who have been trained in teaching proper tackling fundamentals. The results also showed those who played for the certified coaches were 76 percent less likely to get injured and 57 percent less likely to sustain injuries that kept them out of action at least 24 hours. Ninety percent of those players also went uninjured, according to the study. MORE

Obesity by the numbers

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. MORE

DRIVER EDUCATION

2015 National Distracted Driving Enforcement April 10-15, 2015
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
In recognition of April's National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, NHTSA has planned a number of activities. We are also kicking off its second national highly visible enforcement campaign for distracted driving: U Drive. U Text. U Pay., which is supported by English and Spanish language television, radio and digital advertising.

NHTSA has also developed a robust social media strategy designed to raise public awareness about the consequences of texting and driving. The focus is on the idea that "If you're texting, you're not driving." We anticipate that this message will engage the target audience of men and women 18-34 (slightly skewed toward women) with creative and persuasive messaging on NHTSA social media channels and their media partners.

Paid advertising will run April 6-15, 2015. Click here for the 2015 Media Work Plan.
