A message from your president |

Happy Snowy and Frigid Winter!
I wanted to give you all an update on NJAHPERD bills. Thank you all for calling and/or emailing the Senate Education Committee members regarding S-2245 (the bill requires health and physical education teachers in grades K-6 to possess the appropriate instructional certification in the subject and current teachers would be grandfathered). I am delighted to tell you, after providing testimony on Thursday, January 29th and with supporting testimony from our partners the NJ Education Association, NJ YMCA State Alliance, NJ Principals and Supervisors Association, SHAPE America and the NJ PTA, our bill S- 2245 passed out of the Senate Education Committee by a vote of 5-0. The bill will now move on to the Senate Floor for a vote.
Our legislative consultant is initiating a discussion with the Primary Sponsor Assemblyman Peterson regarding A- 4044 (Requires a public school district to provide a daily recess period for students in grades kindergarten through 5) to have it placed on the agenda in the Assembly Education Committee.
If you are planning to attend this year's Convention, consider participating in ADVOCACY 101 with our consultant, Jennifer Sullivan, Esq. and Marybeth Beichert, Associate Director NJEA Government Relations on Tuesday, February 24th at 9:15AM, in Ocean One. You will learn how to advocate for your own profession.
I look forward to greeting you all at the sunny Jersey Shore for our 96th Annual NJAHPERD Convention on February 22nd -24th. There still is time to meet the deadline for the EARLY BIRD registration, which ends February 15th. Please take the lead in your school and get in on the cutting edge programs that are offered to add to your schools quality health and physical education program. Your students will truly benefit from the programs we have planned for you.
Best wishes,
JoAnn Doherty

FREE: Gambling and students presentation |
CCGNJ
March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month! During the month of March, and all year long, we aim to raise awareness about problem gambling. The goal of this campaign is to provide education while increasing awareness about the warning signs of problem gambling and promote the availability of help and hope in New Jersey.
The Council on Compulsive Gambling of NJ (CCGNJ) encourages everyone to Have the Conversation about Problem Gambling. Most adults gamble or know someone who gambles, and therefore could benefit from programs to prevent gambling addiction. In the schools, we are seeing an increase in middle school and teenage gamblers given the rise of daily and weekly fantasy contests, mobile device gambling, internet gambling, and poker. We believe many who suffer in silence do so because they don't know why they developed a problem, what gambling addiction is or where to get help.
The CCGNJ offers FREE educational and informational workshops and sessions to the general public, counsellors, students, and teachers. Whether through an assembly or multiple classroom visits, we "Have the Conversation about Problem Gambling", answer questions, and share experience, background, and hope. If you would like to talk more about how we can help or to set up a time to have one of our prevention specialists come in, please email Daniel J. Trolaro call him directly at 201-316-6160.

U.S. Painkiller Abuse 'Epidemic' May Be Declining, Study Says |
New England Journal of Medicine
U.S. Painkiller Abuse 'Epidemic' May Be Declining, Study Says The U.S. "epidemic" of prescription-painkiller abuse may be starting to reverse course, a new study suggests. Experts said the findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, are welcome news. The decline suggests that recent laws and prescribing guidelines aimed at preventing painkiller abuse are working to some degree. But researchers also found a disturbing trend: Heroin abuse and overdoses are on the rise, and that may be one reason prescription-drug abuse is down. U.S. sales of narcotic painkillers rose 300 percent between 1999 and 2008, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. MORE
