EXECUTIVE BOARD NEWS

A message from your president
Joanne Doherty

I hope you are all managing to survive our brisk wintery weather.

As members of NJAHPERD you know my theme for my second term as your President is "Advocacy Moving Forward" and how important it is to be diligent in educating others about our programs and profession. I am asking you to join Jackie Malaska, Dr. Jim McCall, John Smith, Jamie Julian, Ted Olsen and me on a road trip to Washington, DC on Tuesday, February 10 and our HILL visits on Wednesday, February 11th. This is our chance to educate our Federal Legislators on the value of quality health and physical education programs. Let's change the attitude and thinking of the Congressmen and women that we sent to Washington and convince them to sign on and co-sponsor the Physical Act (Promoting Health as Youth Skills in the classroom and life). This bill will designate health and physical education as core subjects in federal education law. We will also be encouraging our federal lawmakers to continue to support the PEP grant funding which is the only federal education funding for physical education which we here in the state of New Jersey have benefited from in the past.

All 50 states are invited to attend SPEAK Out! Day, which is organized by SHAPE America. The more participation, the stronger our collective VOICE for New Jersey! If we do not ADVOCATE for health and physical education issues - who will?

Leave the driving to us! Limited funding is also available to help defray the cost of lodging. If you are interested in joining us, please register with SHAPE America or call NJAHPERD's office for more information. Help us make a difference on Capital Hill for our students.

Best wishes,

JoAnn Doherty

NJAHPERD President

Nominate your School and Municipality for
Safe Routes Recognition!
Deadline: January 31, 2015
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs and events enable and encourage children to walk and bike to school, leading to healthier, more active children, less traffic congestion near schools, and better air quality - and daily physical activity improves test scores for students! Municipalities and schools (public, private and charter) can - and should - be recognized for their efforts to make walking and bicycling to school safer.  SRTS recognition levels include First Step, Bronze, Silver and Gold, and communities can either be nominated by their Safe Routes Regional Coordinator or self-nominate based on their involvement and commitment to SRTS in their communities.  Recipients are presented with a program certificate and their work is promoted on the NJ SRTS website, in a NJ Safe Routes Scoop article and in a press release.

Work with your SRTS Regional Coordinator for assistance with applying for recognition and with implementing Safe Routes to School programs and events.  Nominees and recipients will be required to implement various programs to receive recognition, such as walk and bike to school events, adopting supportive walking and bicycling policies, obtaining support from local constituents, and/or using survey tools to evaluate existing conditions for safe walking and bicycling to school.  For more information on achievements at each level, and how to apply click here.

Sussex County Charter School for Technology

The 225 middle school students at the Sussex County Charter School for Technology (SCCST) have been actively engaged in learning about archery this school year. The grants were awarded by the

New Jersey Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NJAHPERD), New Jersey Fish and Wildlife, The Appalachian Bowman's Club of Sussex County, United Bow Hunters of New Jersey and the Traditional Archers of New Jersey. MORE

10,000 steps per day? It's more complicated for kids
LiveScience
To be healthy, adults should take 10,000 steps per day - or at least that's the popular notion. For kids, though, the picture is fuzzier. In the face of high childhood obesity rates - and with the advent of increasingly sophisticated fitness trackers, step counters and other devices - more scientists are trying to determine just how many steps little ones should take to stay active. MORE
Make sure kids get appropriate workout
The Times
Experts say it is important to get your child into an exercise routine at a young age to help establish a pattern that will last a lifetime. Agnieszka Krynska-Wozniak, a physical therapist who works for Methodist Hospitals outpatient program, said it's important for kids to be involved in some sort of physical activity for 60 or more minutes every day. Jill Schneider, programs supervisor and fitness specialist for Franciscan Omni Health & Fitness in Chesterton, Indiana, said the American College of Sports Medicine recommends a minimum of 150 minutes of cardiovascular exercise each week. MORE
To prevent children's falls, teach them to skate
The Wall Street Journal
Learning to ice skate significantly increased children's balance and stability, potentially reducing their risk of falls, says a small study in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports. Balance control is important for motor development in childhood. Previous studies found children didn't respond to conventional balance training, possibly because it wasn't appealing, the researchers said.  MORE

Fast-food consumption in children linked to poorer academic outcomes

Water dispensers at school may encourage kids to drink more

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
CDC
January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, which is a great time to promote HPV vaccination to prevent cervical cancer as well as partner with local, state, or national cancer organizations in educating parents and clinicians on the importance of HPV vaccination. To assist you in your promotional efforts, CDC has updated its ready-to-publish (matte) articles and features for you to use during the month.

Here are some simple things you can do to promote cervical cancer prevention this month:

1.      Share CDC's "Protect Your Daughters from Cervical Cancer" feature on your social media platforms.
2.      Place CDC's ready-to-publish articles for parents in your newsletters, on your website, or in local news outlets to educate parents on the importance of getting the HPV vaccine for their children.
3.      Place CDC's new ready-to-publish article for clinicians in venues reaching pediatricians who serve Latino populations.
4.      Work with cancer organizations to get them to distribute these materials to their constituents.

Additionally, even though males aren't directly affected by cervical cancer, HPV vaccination is still important to protect them from a number of cancers caused by HPV. We encourage you to share our "HPV Vaccine for Boys" feature on your social media platforms to encourage parents to get their boys and girls vaccinated against cancers caused by HPV. Click here

Obesity by the numbers

Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. If we don't solve this problem, one third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma. MORE
