|
A message from your president |

On behalf of the NJAHPERD Executive Board, we wish you a healthy and happy New Year!
GREAT NEWS!
NJAHPERD has been informed by our Legislative Consultant, Jennifer Sullivan, that the Recess Bill A 4044 was introduced in the Assembly on Thursday, December 18th, by Assemblyman Erik Peterson, a Republican from District 23 and Assemblyman Joseph Lagana, a Democrat from District 38. Thanks to Assemblyman Lagana for enlisting Assemblyman Peterson to sign on as a Prime Sponsor which means we have bi-partisan support.
I would like to thank Jackie Malaska, Marybeth Beichert (NJEA) and Jennifer Keyes Maloney (NJPSA) for coming up to Assemblyman Lagana's office in Paramus, on December 16th, to ask Assemblyman Lagana to be the Prime Sponsor for the sister bill to Senator Shirley Turner's Recess Bill S- 1594. After presenting the facts and answering his questions, Assemblyman Lagana stated he would be glad to sign on as the Prime Sponsor and also discuss the bill with the Assembly Speaker. True to his word, the Bill was introduced only 2 days later!
This is a great gift for our children of New Jersey and it proves "Advocacy can Move Forward" for NJAHPERD.
NJAHPERD will continue to keep you posted on the progress of both our Bills A- 4044/S- 1598 (Recess) and S-2245/A-3256 (Certification) and yes, we will be asking for your help moving these Bills forward in their respective Houses.
Best wishes,
JoAnn Doherty
NJAHPERD President

Get ready for "No Name-Calling Week" |
January 19-23, 2015
Every child deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. That's why NJAHPERD has joined forces with GLSEN (The Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network) Central New Jersey Chapter to promote No Name-Calling Week during January 19-23, 2015. No Name Calling Week (NNCW) is a national initiative started in 2004. The concept of NNCW builds on the story in the young adult novel by James Howe,The Misfits. In this story a group of students join together to face the challenges of name calling and ultimately make a powerful impact on their school with the proposal of a no name calling day. This year's No Name Calling Week focuses on Celebrating Kindness while working to create safe schools free of name-calling, bullying and bias.
Educators can join the NNCW Listserv and download a variety of free materials at www.glsen.org/nonamecallingweek. GLSEN also sponsors The National Creative Expression Exhibit for NNCW. This exhibit gives students the opportunity to submit works of art that express their ideas and experiences with bullying. In past years, over 1,000 students submitted pieces from a variety of artistic mediums. For details visit www.glsen.org/nonamecallingweek.
Additional information and assistance in developing No Name-Calling Week programs as well as a limited supply of free materials can be arranged by contacting GLSEN Central New Jersey Chapter, cnj@njglsen.org. By the way, each school and program is welcome to choose any time of the year to offer No Name-Calling Week. The immediacy of the national dates, January 19-23, 2015, does not need to be a constraint for your program. MORE

Cold Weather Running Tips |
NYRR Mighty Milers
There is no such thing as bad weather, there is simply being unprepared for what's out there. Check out these tips for winter running from RunnersWorld.com!
-
Get Motivated - Let the kids motivate each other. Friends don't let friends get lazy just because of a little cold!
-
Arm Your Feet - While the cold can be bad, the wet is worse. Wet feet are a runner's worst enemy. Try to wear shoes and socks that wick water, and if your feet do get wet, change immediately after your run.
-
Get Dressed - Layers upon layers of winter clothes are not always the best way to go. You want to be warm but no so warm that you sweat and catch a chill. Work with thin breathable layers and never forget gloves and a hat.
-
Be Seen - The days are shorter and light is limited. If your program runs in the morning or evening be sure it is safe and don't hesitate to have kids run with flashlights or glowsticks.
-
Warm Up Pre-Run - Get the blood pumping indoors before you hit the chill of the outdoors. A little extra pre-run stretching can go a long way after your muscles have been out in the cold for a while.
-
Forget Speed - The cold air can be harsh on your lungs. Use the winter time to focus on endurance as opposed to speed. The strength you gain in colder months can be great for your performance once spring rolls around.
-
Change Quickly Post-Run - The best part of a winter run is coming in out of the cold. To avoid lasting chills be sure to change into dry warm clothes and drink something warm.

Congress eases first lady's school lunch guidelines |

Schools in the U.S. will now have the opportunity to go against the grain of first lady Michelle Obama's healthy lunch program. A massive year-end spending bill released by Congress doesn't allow schools to opt out of healthier school meal standards championed by the first lady, as House Republicans had sought. But it would ease standards that many students and school officials complained about. MORE
