Why another publication from NJAHPERD?

So you are asking yourself, "Why another publication from NJAHPERD? Don't we already have coverage in the FYI for American Heart Association Coordinator news?"

The answer is....you do! However, our very astute FYI editor, Suzette, thought that extracting the tremendous amount of important information from the bi-weekly newsletter and placing it in the NEW "Heart Hero News" would highlight and honor the work that you ALL do.

Now, each month, there will be a singular place for the most up-to-date American Heart Association and SHAPE America news.  This is a forum for YOU, the teaching professionals. Suzette has made it simple for you to SHARE the strategies that have worked in promoting your events, the recruiting assistance received from administration, staff and parents, the how to's of implementing the educational components and teaching progressive skills within your daily lessons, and a place to ask questions of other teachers and coordinators.

So now there is a time and place for YOU, the HEROS , to JUMP to it! We hope you enjoy this new monthly newsletter. Please do not hesitate to let us know your thoughts!

My Best,

Christine Baccarella

NJAHPERD, JR/HFH Coordinator

Congratulations,
Sue Kassab
Faye Biles Educational Award Winner

Like Faye Biles, Sue Kassab has been a pioneer in the five schools in which she has conducted Jump Rope for Heart.  Sue currently works as a part-time PE Teacher in three different Catholic Schools within The Diocese of Paterson, NJ.  Over the last few years she has seen two of her schools close their doors.  She moved on to other schools in the area and brought the Jump Rope for Heart program right along with her.

Sue starts with the story of how she lost her father to heart disease.  This is her underlying motivation for the success of her events.  She does it for her dad.  Sue then tells her own story of weight loss and healthy choices that have resulted in an amazing personal transformation.

Sue does not just host a Jump Rope for Heart event at all of these schools.  She hosts a heart healthy, educational jump fest!  Sue uses the weeks leading up to each event utilizing all the educational materials and teaching jump skills to her students.  She also models the passion for the lifesaving mission of The American Heart Association and has inspired many of her students to become lifelong heart heroes as well.

Many of her kids are so inspired, they participate because of the mission not for the thank you gifts. In fact, many of the kids check the box that indicates they do not want the thank you gifts and most write on their envelope that they are jumping in honor or memory of someone.

As the kids jump, Sue is full of facts and information for the kids regarding their heart muscle.  She takes time to have them stop, take their pulse and really understand what their hearts are doing to support their jump efforts.  It is obvious at the event that the students have learned a lot of jump skills.  There are smiles everywhere and the kids are confident and proud of their abilities.

Sue's fundraising is amazing.  Over the last 10 years she has raised almost $200,000.  I consider Sue one of The American Heart Association' s MVP's!  She is a well deserving recipient of the Faye Biles Award and is truly a heart hero for all of us.

New Online Fundraising Tool

Raising money online for  the American Heart Association (AHA) through a Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) or Hoops For Heart (HFH) event has never been easier. With the second year of our new online system under our belts, we have seen a tremendous increase in the number of students and donors fundraising online. We have also seen many PE teachers, once unsure about raising money online, come full circle and actually get excited about the impact it has had on their events!
