A message from your president |

A Happy Brisk December to All
I would like to thank all of you who contacted Senator Peter Barnes (D-18) to ask him to have Senator Ruiz (Chair of the Education Committee) place NJAHPERD's Senate Bill 2245 (K-6 HPE certification) on her Committee's agenda. NJAHPERD's legislative consultant, Jennifer Sullivan Esq., has done a wonderful job contacting specific legislators to post S-2245 at the next Senate Education Committee meeting. Due to Ms. Sullivan's efforts, Senator Diane Allen's (D-7) has indicated she would be co-prime sponsor. If you haven't taken action yet, we still need you to call/email your own District Senator and ask them to please call Senator Ruiz's (D-29) office and ask her to place the bill on the agenda.
We have also set up a meeting with Assemblymen Lagana and Eustace (D-38) to discuss reintroducing A-3935 (recess bill) the sister bill to Senator Turner's Bill S-1594. The Senate version has been re-introduced in this current legislative session. We will keep you posted as we "move forward" advocating for our members.
"Advocacy is Moving Forward" here in New Jersey because of all our members, family and friends. Now we need to take it a step further to Washington, DC to our Federal Legislators. I am asking you to please join us on our "road trip" to Alexandria, VA on Tuesday, February 10, 2015. SHAPE America provides training and all the "leave behind" materials for the Congressmen. On Wednesday, we drive into DC for our scheduled appointments with our New Jersey Legislators. Last year, we had six NJAHPERD members (3 professionals and 3 future professionals) attend. Our goal is to double the number and visit all our legislators.
Please believe that we can have an impact on the legislative "ASKS" that are important to the profession and our students. This year we are focused on the PHYSICAL Act - which would designate health and physical education as core subjects in federal education law, and PEP grant funding- the only federal education funding for physical education. Want your voice to be heard? Then register to attend SPEAK OUT! Day with your NJ colleagues! The deadline to register is January 11, 2015. Take advantage of the travel scholarships by January 9, 2015. NJAHPERD has also designated funding for attendees and encourages you to travel with us. This is your opportunity to make a new year's resolution to advocate for your students at the federal level.
If you haven't requested professional day approval for the 96th Annual Convention, you need to get it done! We wouldn't want you to miss the best star studded, content-specific, professional development in Health Education, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance and MORE! We are all set with pre-convention on Sunday, February 22nd and two full days on February 23rd and 24th, 2015, at Ocean Place Resort & Spa in Long Branch.
Sessions are planned to focus on lifetime sports and activities, fitness education, technology, dance, health, inclusion, assessment and many other topics to take you into the 21st Century. We have National, Eastern District and NJAHPERD TOYS from elementary, middle school and high school levels, as well as National, Eastern and State Association leaders coming to share their experiences with you to add to your quality programs. Plus, two fantastic highly motivated Keynote Speakers, a social on Monday evening which will provide you with sheer magic and more, innovative exhibitors, our annual food drive, free parking, morning coffee, great networking with your colleagues and a Grande Finale on Tuesday with fantastic prizes for your school program.
I am looking forward to greeting you all. Please stop me and say hello as I want to thank you personally for all you do for our students each and everyday.
Sincerely yours,
JoAnn Doherty
NJAHPERD President

Beloved Community Charter School , Jersey City, NJ, wins 2nd Place in SPARK Challenge |
 | Beloved Charter School |
Congratulations!
Officials from SPARK Programs recently awarded Beloved Community Charter School in Jersey City 2nd place in their national 25 Days of SPARK Challenge.
The contest challenged schools throughout the United States to help their students perform sixty minutes of daily physical activity for 25 of the 31 days in October.
Physical Educators at each school were asked to track their student's exercise performance on an official SPARK Challenge activity log. At the end of October, each log was collected, and P.E. teachers at each school were required to count how many students met the 25-day physical activity requirement.
SPARK Programs officially announced that Beloved, a charter school in the Lafayette section of Jersey City, had earned their 2nd place prize after 583 of their 610 students met the requirement of the 25 day SPARK Challenge. According to the SPARK website, over 1,000 schools nationwide participated in the contest.
As part of their prize package, Beloved received a $2,500 grant to purchase P.E.-related equipment.
P.E. teachers John Taylor, Ashley Archer, and Suzanne Hemeda, who tracked every student's physical activity performances throughout October and reported those results to SPARK personnel, led Beloved's efforts.

Why it's time to legislate physical activity for our kids |

Today's kids are not active enough. And they are becoming less active every year. NJ has highest prevalence of obesity for low income children under age 5
|
NJDOH
Take a look at the updated Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Obesity New Jersey Fact Sheet. MORE
Some of you will note that obesity rates for NJ's low income children under the age of five appear to be significantly decreased from earlier reports. Unfortunately, that is a bit misleading. Due to recent methodological changes in national and state public health surveillance systems, including BRFSS, PedNSS, and YRBS/NJSHS, we suggest caution in comparing these data to data from previous years. For more information about changes in methodology, please see the websites for each surveillance system, referenced at the bottom of page 2.
Based on this most recent data in this category, NJ has the highest prevalence of obesity among the 44 states that report under PedNSS.

Debate spurred after student refused to weigh in at school |
The Des Moines Register
A student's refusal to be weighed in front of her class and her mother's complaints to the school board sparked an Iowa school district to suspend weighing students as part of a measure to determine their body mass index, or BMI, a common health assessment tool in schools across the country. It also brought up a tender subject. In an era when the country's weight problem is a leading public health concern, school and health officials say it's a vital measure, however imperfect. MORE

Kean University in partnership with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety developed a parent/teen safe driving orientation called Share the Keys (STK). STK is a research based, data-driven program designed to reduce teen driver crash risks by increasing parental involvement.
Share the Keys is presented by facilitators in community based settings (i.e. schools, libraries) and is approximately 90 minutes in length. STK is offered both as voluntary and mandated programs linked to parking permit requirements, classroom driver education programs and back-to-school nights. STK is designed ideally for parents and their teens during the pre-permit or permit stage of licensure. However, parents and young drivers already holding a probationary license will also benefit. The program includes a resource guide full of user friendly practical information and tools that support safe driving practices.
