Jackie Malaska, Executive Director

|
A message from your president |

First, I would like to thank all of you who attended the NJEA Convention on November 6-7 and participated in any of the twenty-five NJAHPERD sessions. A big thank you to Diane Glover, our NJAHPERD Executive Board liaison to the NJEA Affiliates Committee, for coordinating and assisting all our presenters at the NJEA Convention. All of our presenters did a fabulous job with individual workshops and addressing the needs of a diverse audience. You are the real troopers. Thanks to all of our members who stopped by the NJAHPERD booth. It truly was our pleasure to meet, greet and provide you with resources that you can use for your program. Tthank you to all who joined us for an enjoyable NJAHPERD Dinner get together at Bucca's on Wednesday evening.Special thanks to FlagHouse for providing all of the equipment used for the activity sessions.
Second, is an update on NJAHPERD's K-6 Certification Bill S- 2245 which is sponsored by Senator Peter J. Barnes III, District 18. As you know the bill "requires teachers of health and physical education in grades kindergarten through six in public schools to possess the appropriate endorsement to the instructional certificate, and include a "grandfather" provision." Unfortunately, our Bill was not on Senator Theresa M. Ruiz, Chair of the Senate Education Committee's agenda on November 13th. I am now asking you to please CALL Senator Barnes (our Sponsor of the Bill) office at 1-732-548-1406 and ask him to contact Senator to Ruiz to place S- 2245 on her committee's next agenda. If you live in District 18, you can stop by his office and personally ask your Senator to have his Bill place on the Education agenda as soon as possible. Again, thank you for all you have done and continue to do to move NJAHPERD's Bill forward as our voices and personal contact really do matter.
Third, NJAHPERD has a fantastic Health Conference planned for all health, physical education, classroom teachers, guidance counselors, special education teachers, social workers and administrators/supervisors on Monday, December 8th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Monroe, NJ. The title is "Empowering, Mind, Body & Spirit". Please make every effort to attend and bring someone with you from your school. I guarantee you that you will bring something back that you will be able you add to your individual program and it will benefit your students and school.
Thank you and I wish you all a very beautiful Thanksgiving with your family and friends.
My best,
JoAnn Doherty
NJAHPERD President

NJ school gets playground made of recycled materials |
NJ News 12 and CBS News NY
Children at BelovED Community Charter School of Jersey City are showing off the benefits of brushing and flossing their teeth- and it's not just in their smiles. CBS's Elise Finch explains they won a recycling contest by saving old toothpaste tubes and dental floss containers.
A brand new playground was awarded Nov. 4, 2014 to the students at BelovED Community Charter School of Jersey City. The students were the winners of the "Recycled Playground Challenge," courtesy of Colgate, TerraCycle and ShopRite Supermarkets. The school earned a total of 178,303 Playground Credits by recycling waste and through online voting by teachers and parents. The playground's plastic components are made using recycled toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes and floss containers. MORE
To help BelovED win the contest, P.E. Teachers, John Taylor and Ashley Archer, were apart of a "street team" that handed flyers out to commuters in Jersey City that asked them to go online & vote for us.
Jomayra Torres, a Beloved 1st grade teacher and the 2014 NJCSA Teacher of the Year, marketed the school's efforts using social media and went to local businesses asking them to place signage in their stores that encouraged people to vote for BelovED. Ms. Torres also ran an in-school campaign asking students to bring in empty tooth paste tubes. Ms. Torres then mailed the tubes to the contest organizers to improve out point totals.
Victoria DeLeon, our Dean of Students, constantly spoke with parents and our BelovED community members in-person, through email, and on our school Facebook account encouraging them to vote.
Our BelovED PTO President, Elijah Wells, raised money through school-based fundraisers to help pay for our flyers and helped with our networking to local businesses to advertise our involvement in the contest.
Needless to say, this was a joint effort by the entire BelovED community to ensure a playground for the students!

Child Safety and Protection Month...November |
President's Challenge
| Although child safety should be a top priority every month, November is specifically dedicated to the protection of children. This month, take the steps necessary to ensure a safe home environment for your children. Here are a few tips on how you can keep your children safe inside and outside of your home: |
- Foods such hot dogs, hard candies and nuts are hard to chew, and cause 40% of all childhood choking deaths, so monitoring your child during snacks and meals may be a good idea.
- Use child safety seats in the rear of the car, and never put children in the front seat.
- Keep small children away from workout equipment.
- When riding bikes, make sure your children are wearing properly fitted helmets.
- When participating in contact sports like football or hockey, make sure that your children have the correct safety equipment like pads and mouth guards.
- If your children walk to and from school or extracurricular activities, make sure that they are wearing reflective gear once the days start getting shorter and darker earlier.

Teacher uses pedal desks to increase physical activity |
Great Falls Tribune
Kristi Knaub, a middle school teacher at Monforton School near Bozeman, Montana, is passionate about increasing classroom-based physical activity. That passion was sparked when she attended a national conference where John Medina, a molecular biologist and author of the book "Brain Rules," - and one of our Seattle convention speakers - spoke about studies that link exercise and activity with increased brain function. With a little research, she found pedal desks. MORE

Could what a Texas junior high is doing with its football program save the game? |
Texas Monthly
The future of football is in question, and figuring out how to make parents feel secure letting their kids play it is the key to resolving that question in a manner that assures the sport of its continued prominence. That's something they seem to understand out in the east Texas town of Marshall, where the youth football program, under the guidance of Marshall High School coach Clint Harper, has pulled the plug on its tackle football program for young players, instead switching the format over to two-hand touch. How a student with autism taught me to kayak |
PBS News Hour
Daniel Hernandez is a 10th grader with striking eyes and a ready smile who is prone to answer questions with a polite "Yes, ma'am." This young man, who is 16, used to be described as "shy," but he knows a lot about kayaking: how to set up the seats, put the oars together and how to get in without flipping it over. He knows how to steer the small vessel right, left, and how to stop.
I, however, have never been kayaking. I'm a novice when it comes to most water sports and probably wouldn't inspire great confidence in any teacher. But Daniel had confidence. He was proud to share what he knew. Excited really. And he wasn't alone. Daniel was among several of his classmates from American Senior High School in Miami who volunteered to teach me how to kayak. Try out some of these great Thanksgiving recipes for a healthier holiday. | Orange Glazed Brussel Sprouts and Butternut Squash | Serves 4-5 1 lb. brussel sprouts washed, trimmed and halved 1 1/2 lb. butternut squash, peeled then diced into 1/2 in cubes 2 Tbsp. olive oil, divided Salt 1 cup halved pecans | For glaze: 2 Tbsp. butter, melted 2 Tbsp. honey 3 Tbsp. fresh squeezed orange juice 1 Tbsp. orange zest 1/2 t black pepper 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar
In a large sauté pan, heat 1 Tbsp. olive oil over medium heat. Swirl to coat pan and then add in squash. Stir the squash pieces to coat with oil and sprinkle with 1/4 tsp. salt. Shake the pan so squash spreads out in an even layer and let cook, without stirring, to brown slightly on one side. Stir and spread the pieces out again and let cook without stirring to allow more of the squash to brown. Let cook until the squash is soft, but holds it shape. Remove from heat and pour into a bowl. Heat the other tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat using the same pan. When very hot, place the brussel sprouts cut side down in the oil, sprinkling with 1/2 tsp salt. Turn the heat to medium, and sear on one side until nicely browned, about three minutes. Turn the brussel sprouts over and cook on the other side until nicely browned and tender, three to five minutes. Turn heat down to low and add the squash back to the pan, along with the halved pecans. Stir in the glaze and cook for a few minutes, coating all ingredients and warming through. | Crust-less Pumpkin Pie | 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice 2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp salt 2 tsp baking powder 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1/3 cup, plus 2 extra Tbsp. brown sugar 1 (15-oz) can pumpkin puree 3/4 cup plus 2 Tbsp. milk of choice 2 Tbsp. canola oil 1 Tbsp. ground flaxseed 2 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract | Preheat oven to 400 degrees, and grease a 10-inch round pan. Why schools should screen their students' mental health |

Diabetes Awareness Month...November |
| November is Diabetes Awareness Month and November 14th is World Diabetes Day. Let's take this month to learn how our lifestyle affects our risk for diabetes and how we can work to prevent its onset.
Diabetes currently affects more than 371 million people worldwide, and is expected to continue to rise. Take a few minutes to educate yourself about diabetes, the risk factors, symptoms, and what you can do to prevent it. Here are a few quick facts about diabetes: |
- Diabetes causes 6 deaths every minute and 1 in 20 deaths in the world is due to the condition. Every year it is estimated that 3.2 million people in the world die due to diabetes or its related causes.
- Diabetes is an important 'silent killer disease' as there are usually no early symptoms of the disease. The most common early symptom is feeling thirsty frequently.
- Almost 90 to 95% of diabetes is type 2, or maturity onset type, which affects people in their middle age. Type 1, or juvenile diabetes, affects 70,000 children under the age of 15 every year.
- Diabetes is the number one cause of kidney failure in the world. In addition to causing kidney failure, every year it is responsible for 5% or 5 million cases of blindness in adults and one million limb amputations. Diabetes is also an important cause of heart disease, stroke and cataracts.
| The major cause of increase in the incidence of diabetes is a sedentary lifestyle. Exercise and diet can either reduce or delay the incidence of diabetes by over 50%.
If you have diabetes, or are at risk of developing diabetes, follow these easy tips for getting started on the track to a healthy lifestyle: |
- Make appointments with your doctor and dentist. Catch up on your routine screening and immunizations, and take the opportunity to ask your doctor any questions you might have.
- Measure your height and weight to check your BMI, and measure your waist circumference to see if you're overweight and if your waistline is putting your health at risk.
- Assess your activity. How much physical activity do you get in a typical week and how intense is it? The CDC recommends that adults get at least two and a half hours per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or one hour and 15 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity, plus muscle-strengthening activities at least two days per week.
- Keep a food diary. Write down everything you eat for a day -- and no fair skipping the items you're embarrassed about. Once you see what you're eating, you can make a conscious effort to improve your diet by make healthy substitutions. For example, if you notice you tend to reach for a bag of potato chips every afternoon for a quick snack, try swapping the chips out for whole almonds. The almonds will give you the salty, crunchy satisfaction you're looking for.
- Check your mood and energy. Healthy living includes emotional wellness and adequate rest.
| After educating yourself on the risks, symptoms, and prevention of diabetes, take some time this month to evaluate if your current lifestyle is putting you at high risk for contracting diabetes. If you believe that it is, it is time to make a change. |

Leisure time physical activity linked to lower depression risk |
University College London via ScienceDaily
Being physically active three times a week reduces the odds of being depressed by approximately 16 percent, according to new research. The study found a two-way relationship between depression and physical activity. People who increased their weekly activity reported fewer depressive symptoms but those with more depressive symptoms were less active, particularly at younger ages. MORE

Raising money online for the American Heart Association (AHA) through a Jump Rope For Heart (JRFH) or Hoops For Heart (HFH) event has never been easier. With the second year of our new online system under our belts, we have seen a tremendous increase in the number of students and donors fundraising online. We have also seen many PE teachers, once unsure about raising money online, come full circle and actually get excited about the impact it has had on their events! MORE

FREE: Share the keys program facilitator training |
Kean University and NJDHTS
Kean University in partnership with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety developed a parent/teen safe driving orientation called Share the Keys (STK). STK is a research based, data-driven program designed to reduce teen driver crash risks by increasing parental involvement.
Share the Keys is presented by facilitators in community based settings (i.e. schools, libraries) and is approximately 90 minutes in length. STK is offered both as voluntary and mandated programs linked to parking permit requirements, classroom driver education programs and back-to-school nights. STK is designed ideally for parents and their teens during the pre-permit or permit stage of licensure. However, parents and young drivers already holding a probationary license will also benefit. The program includes a resource guide full of user friendly practical information and tools that support safe driving practices.

Free Driver Education Programs and Resources | NJAHPERD As a result of the Driver Education Conferences, NJAHPERD members will now be provided with free monthly resources and speakers for your classroom. Working roadside is a dangerous and sometimes deadly job. That's why when motorists see flashing lights on the side of the road, they're required to slow down and if it's safe, move over -- away from police, fire crews, paramedics, tow truck drivers, and DOT workers. The M.A.R.C. campaign, founded in memory of New Jersey State Trooper Marc Castellano who was struck and killed in 2010 while conducting a criminal investigation on the shoulder of I-195 by an individual who failed to adhere to New Jersey's Move Over Law, provides in school presentations to ensure all new drivers know and adhere to this lifesaving provision.
