NJAHPERD BOARD MEMBERS |

Jackie Malaska, Executive Director
|
|
A message from your president |

First, I would like to thank all of you, our NJAHPERD members, our outstanding presenters and our VPs and Coordinators of events, who attended and participated in the amazing workshops and conferences that NJAHPERD has held thus far this year: Two Driver Education Workshops; The Lake Conference K-8 PE; "Let's Dance NJ"; Fitnessgram Training; "A Day in a LMAS"; Engaging Strategies for Teaching Adolescent Health; the Adapted Health and Physical Education Conference; and, the Future Professionals Workshop, with still more to come.
SECOND, NJAHPERD really needs your help to "THUNDERCALL" ( we are 2050 strong in membership) Senator Theresa M. Ruiz (D29), Chair of the Senate Education Committee, where our NJAHPERD Senate Bill S- 2245 (Primary Sponsor Senator Peter Barnes III) sister Bill to A- 3256 which has passed the Full Assembly 76-1-0 sits. Senator Ruiz's phone number is 973-484-1000. We have TEN days to keep calling her office to get Senate Bill S- 2245 on her committee's agenda for the November 13th committee meeting.
Please also ask your family and friends to call, as the more calls that are made, the more impact we will have. Your voice as an Advocate and our message are important as this bill "requires teachers of health and physical education in grades kindergarten through six in Public schools to possess the appropriate endorsement to the instructional certificate and includes a "grandfather" clause. The bill ensures our students be taught by highly skilled educators and will improve the quality of health education and physical education in our elementary schools. Ultimately, our children are the benefactors.
Thank you in advance and yes, I do believe your voices will make a difference in the "THUNDERCALL".
Sincerely yours,
JoAnn Doherty
NJAHPERD President

Connecticut teacher brings creativity to physical education |
Hartford Courant
When it comes to exercise, Wethersfield, Connecticut, physical education teacher Kevin Kobelski strives to get his students thinking outside the box. Take dribbling a basketball. Kobelski wants his Highcrest Elementary School students to get creative. So he invited a man who dribbles two basketballs as he runs marathons to come to talk to his kids. Some are testing out standing desks and realizing that a little bit of activity can actually improve attention spans. Others, like Ward Elementary in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, are starting to fill classrooms with exercise bikes, so students can work out while they learn. MORE

Encourage young boys and girls to run, jump, squeal, hop and chase after each other or after erratically kicked balls, and you substantially improve their ability to think, according to the most ambitious study ever conducted of physical activity and cognitive performance in children. How to teach kids about healthy eating (and have fun at the same time) |
One Green Planet
Eating healthy food can be hard to sell to kids. When youngsters are constantly pandered to with sugared, salted and highly processed, addictive snacks, nutritious meals are often met with "ew," "yuck" or "I don't eat green things." Physical Activity Tips |
MVPA
Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) refers to the intensity level of an activity. MVPA produces large increases in breathing or heart rate, such as jogging, aerobic dance, or bicycling uphill. Most traditional physical education classes yield between 10-40 percent of class time in MVPA. However, current recommendations are for students to spend at least 50 percent of physical education class time in MVPA. Check out these teaching strategies to ramp up MVPA:
- Start all physical education classes with an instant activity
- Focus on individual or small group activities
- Put a new spin on existing activities
- Get students moving during roll call
- Increase motivation with small physical activity challenges during class

She worked for over 12 years as the NJ State Director of Advocacy for the American Cancer Society in New Jersey, where she was in charge of the Society's legislative efforts in Trenton, and worked on many public health issues including efforts to increase physical activity in schools. She has worked on many successful campaigns including efforts to ban smoking in indoor places, increasing access to screenings and healthcare for the uninsured.
Her experience working with state policymakers, strategizing on legislative campaigns, and incorporating volunteers into advocacy efforts, will help advance NJAHPERD's legislative goals. She is looking forward to using her experience and skills to advance NJAHPERD's agenda in Trenton.

FREE: Share the keys program facilitator training |
Kean University and NJDHTS
Kean University in partnership with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety developed a parent/teen safe driving orientation called Share the Keys (STK). STK is a research based, data-driven program designed to reduce teen driver crash risks by increasing parental involvement.
Share the Keys is presented by facilitators in community based settings (i.e. schools, libraries) and is approximately 90 minutes in length. STK is offered both as voluntary and mandated programs linked to parking permit requirements, classroom driver education programs and back-to-school nights. STK is designed ideally for parents and their teens during the pre-permit or permit stage of licensure. However, parents and young drivers already holding a probationary license will also benefit. The program includes a resource guide full of user friendly practical information and tools that support safe driving practices.

NJ's Teen Safe Driving peer-to-peer program |
Application Deadline: November 14th
The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey is hosting its 5th Annual U Got Brains Champion Schools Program - a contest to challenge New Jersey high school students and a faculty advisor to create a unique project aimed at educating teens about the importance of safe driving. All schools will receive a stipend to help implement their campaign. This year, three driving simulators and other prizes will be awarded. Deadline to apply is November 14th. Apply here
NEW THIS YEAR! Advisors will receive up to 3 professional development hours for participating in the Champion Schools Program Here's how it works: Develop an idea in your school for a project related to teen driving safety based on the key safety issues provided. Submit your project name and a short summary of the proposed project. If your school's project is selected, you will receive a stipend to implement it. Selected schools will have several months to implement their projects and receive ongoing technical support. Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of teen injuries and death and you have the power to help change that. This is a great opportunity to engage your students in an educational, fun and interactive competition, while addressing an important safety issue. To quote a teacher advisor who has participated in this program for three straight years, "In 25 years of teaching, this is the best program I've ever been involved in!". We are looking for creative campaign ideas that will draw attention and make an impact on new drivers. Learn more and Apply today! Please email Wendy Berk or call her at 732-972-3451 with questions. Free Driver Education Programs and Resources | NJAHPERD As a result of the Driver Education Conferences, NJAHPERD members will now be provided with free monthly resources and speakers for your classroom. Working roadside is a dangerous and sometimes deadly job. That's why when motorists see flashing lights on the side of the road, they're required to slow down and if it's safe, move over -- away from police, fire crews, paramedics, tow truck drivers, and DOT workers. The M.A.R.C. campaign, founded in memory of New Jersey State Trooper Marc Castellano who was struck and killed in 2010 while conducting a criminal investigation on the shoulder of I-195 by an individual who failed to adhere to New Jersey's Move Over Law, provides in school presentations to ensure all new drivers know and adhere to this lifesaving provision.
